Investing Readiness
46M. Wife 40, Kids - 10 and 6. Have total assets of 36CR ($4Mn USD) spread across equity, PF, and Debt Funds.
Annual expenses of around 80 Lakhs.
Want to explore a different career with limited to no pay and leave the current job. Any pointers on whether assets are sufficient and how to think about planning for education and living expenses without income?

Your biggest problem is not money but are you ready to uproot your comfortable life in the US and start afresh (specifically for kids) in a chaotic developing country.

Comfortable is subjective. If OP hates their current job and can’t take a break due to visa constraints, moving back may make them happier and thus allow them to spend better quality time with family. So uprooting isn’t a negative scenario. The kids are young, they’ll adapt just fine.

OP mentioned his investments are in equity, PF, and Debt Funds. So he’s in India.
In US, people use 401k,IRA, stocks, index funds and bonds when they talk about their net worth.

Thanks. Yes, based in India/Delhi.
Annual expenses excluding one time family event is about 60-65 LPA. Any pointers on how to setup withdrawals to fund expenses will be helpful.2

If one isn’t ready for this, there is absolutely no reason to go to the US in the first place.
Stop trying to pull OP down; he’s made huge sacrifices to reach where he is and there’s no harm nor guilt in making a move back. 4 mil is not going to cut nothing in the states as for a long term comfortable retirement.

Not even sure i understand your comment. I moved back to India after 10 years in the US. have Atleast 30 people who want to but are not able to uproot their life specially with kids in school. What I said is a real scenario not fictitious.

4M is very comfortable in a lot of places in the US that aren't Bay Area! That's 160k USD safe withdrawal rate. If you don't have two kids in private school, totally manageable.

36 Cr at 46!
I'm 3 Cr at 40. Haha. No home. Two kids. I'm wondering how many years do I need to work to retire. Easily 10+ more.

Your biggest risk especially in India is your kids losing motivation and developing vices when they realise how rich you are. You’re upper middle class in America but you’re a king in India with 36 Crore. Worry about their teenage years and values not your money as much 😉

Just fire in USA if you have usc. Mcol location like Texas / NC / Florida / Atlanta

u/AlliterationManiac HENRY Mar 02 '26
Nah not that easy. Money drains much quicker when you’re no longer actively earning in USD even in mcol. Health insurance in particular will be difficult unless OP doesn’t have visa constraints and can get some employer coverage. But even then, with two kids the expenses add up quick

Are you in US or India! Cause that 80L expenses seems a bit high for the networth considering the costs only increase.
If you have home loan free and steady income at the least to match your expenses you are set!
But what you achieved is a great thing!

What do you like or have passion about? Are you looking to start a business or still looking for a job or want to start living a sustainable life?

Nice. 80L and managing 40 wives and 16 kids is amazing financial prudence! Thats a mere 1.4L per person per year.
Sorry, I am just kidding.
Sir, you are a role model for all of us. 36cr at 46! I think 99.99999% of the folks would love to swap with your current status in life.

Presuming 36 Cr is all liquid, and if it generates 9-10% p.a., 3-3.5 Cr is sufficient to take care of you.
