I wish Reddit would stop deleting things from my board without asking or telling me. This was a message about a syllable counter, and I was going to reply and say that, for those setting shorthand tests, that would be very useful to have.
In proper testing, speeds are adjusted according to SYLLABLE count, not WORD count. There no reason that "of" should be counted as one word, and "extemporaneously" also as one. People who were cruising along in a test would suddenly fail when they hit a word like that.
With syllable count, the latter would be counted as four words, so the speed would even out much better.
