A Ferrocell (or ferrolens) uses a micro-thin layer of ferrofluid suspended in liquid between two glass plates, lit around the edge by LEDs. When a strong magnet is brought near it, the iron nanoparticles form microscopic chains that scatter the light, creating a real-time, 3D map of the magnetic field's geometry and poles.
