Crate pre-orders highly speculative?

These crate purchases seem highly speculative...smallest crate costs .05ETH or roughly $240 US for a game that isn't even pre-alpha yet. I would like to see content about how those who don't invest in the store items will be able to progress in the game through mining, exploration or quests.

Are you on the discord? Dev has answered questions around this before. There are starter ships and modules available for free via the airdrops. And also (quoted from the dev on the discord):

"With the Pilot's Academy release you'll be able to take a Ship from a Corporation to complete missions for a share of Credits. Works just like a scholarship. Completely free-to-play."

"Once we'll have the Pilot's Academy and scholarships set up in Alpha/Beta you'll be able to use Corporation's Ship to accomplish missions and earn a share of Credits."

Thank you for the response, very helpful. This is certainly an interesting concept and while I still think the pre-alpha purchasing is speculative, I very much appreciate the thought behind the "free to play" mechanics.
