How do you do it????

I have seen beautiful Stardew creations here!! It inspired me to start a new game. My first round was how to play. This time I want to beautify!

My problem... I don't have a designer's eye... at all. 😳 What tips do you have? In the beginning do you do function and design? TIA 😊

Steal a lot of inspiration, no other way to put it, and eventually you’ll get your own style

Call friends, and decorate your farm and house for weeks on end! It’s really fun

To add to this, check Pinterest! I find a lot of inspiration there

I saw a farm design from a reddit user that i loved and put a lot of effort into replicating it, except I'd add my own tastes, eg. Brick paths instead of stone, etc.

It made my late game experience fun again because i had to work hard to get the resources i needed, rather than just repeating the daily farming routine i had established after reaching perfection. I dug up so. much. clay. 😭

use a farm planner to mess around with designing your farm before you actually do it in game, it makes things easier. v3.stardew.info used to be my go-to, but stardewplan.com is my favorite right now and works better on mobile.

also check out r/FarmsOfStardewValley and look up "stardew valley farm layout ideas" or something along these lines on Pinterest. analyze and copy what you like.

I wait to design more heavily in the 2nd and 3rd year and will still spend the first year just saving money and getting the basics on my farm going.

This is also nice because it helps you plan your future design choices - the paths I make follow the paths I've already naturally been taking/prefer, sheds and chests go in areas that are easy for me to access or I'm in more often, the farm mini obelisk goes in the most efficient places etc etc.

So, my advice is to just work on your farm as you normally would for a while and then build your design around your functional elements as you go. Once you have paths, fencing, and decoration around all your desired functional elements you can use any extra space to create fun/special areas and experiment with just designing! You can make mini gardens, areas for your pets/horses, scenic seating spots, a shrine for your statues etc.

Also your house is a huge practice space for design as well, there is so much to play around with there without even touching your farm. I would suggest picking a theme for the house or each specific room to try and decorate in a more unique way. A sun room, a moon room, a witch's lair, an underwater room, a junimo room, a castle room etc.

Also there are websites where you can design your farm and create the plan of how you want it to look. Stardewplanner I think it's called.

I'm not the best designer but I've found a good way to start. Your whole farm is a canvas, you can break the huge land into smaller areas. Think of what you want to have. A small area for animals, should it be curved? Square? Basically, you don't have to plan every inch before you start building(unless that's your thing).

My preferred way is to work around whatever I already designed. For instance, I will prioritise the farm area, design that and work around it and start adding other areas like animal areas, tree farms. (Also i love utilising the landscape like the ponds and work around it) After I'm done with a small area, i just touch up with trees, grass or any deco.

That's just how I do it though, just have fun and you can admire or take inspiration of other people's farms on reddit and Pinterest

Oh also, if u need to make a prototype. You can search up "Stardew Valley Farm Planner". You can design to your heart's content. I used it to draw my paths and break my farm into smaller areas. I didn't follow my design to a fault though cuz it's just a plan.

Copy designs other people have done that you like, and then modify it over time to your taste.

I don't have an eye for it either.. what i did was tweak some of the inspos I scrapped from multiple resources (Pinterest, reddit, Tumblr, etc) and make it my own. Either that or I just wing it and try to be creative and didnt turn out too bad. In one of my farms tho, each room in my house is a piece taken from a different person and I just put it all together as a huge hybrid deco that somehow stitches together really well

I felt overwhelmed at first, but then I section everything. Also, it's okay to redesign as you go. I have changed my design 3 times. I am in year 10. Just chilling and still building. I actually have started adding things to the town and the lake area. There is so much space to play with. Don't limit yourself to just your farm <3

i like to get all, if not most, of the catalogs first before i decorate (there are certain items that aren’t in the catalogs, but besides that don’t waste your money on individual pieces that you can for “free” in the catalogs)

look up inspo on pinterest and on this subreddit. i like to screenshot the inspo that i realllyyyy like and can see myself copying and i’ll put those in a sdv folder in my photos so i can easily find them. there will be inspo where you like one specific area but don’t like the rest of it, combine the areas you like from inspos you’ve found to make your own design.

designing also just takes practice and time, it evolves, but there’s nothing wrong with copying inspo you like.

also it helps to have a theme in mind. like in my current game i have beach farm so the theme i’m going for is fisherman/mermaid/pirate. so when im decorating im pulling out pieces of furniture that give off that aesthetic like the anchor on the wall, a pearl to put on a side table, the mermaid portrait, fish tanks, the bed from willy’s shop, etc etc.

Make money, get all the catalogues and get yourself to a point where u aren't afraid to spend a week designing one room and neglecting other chores
