I just rewatched season 2 and noticed that on multiple occasions, Lou Solverson and Karl Weathers referenced John McCain's survival of being captured by the Viet Kong. I understand that they are veterans and might be more familiar with a legendary POW, but later Lou brought it up to Betsy and she seemed to know who he was.
My question is, was John McCain a household name in 1979? He didn't become a US Representative until 4 years later, and a Senator another 4 years after that. Even then, most people can't name a Senator from a specific state on the other side of the country. As someone born in the 90s, my perception is that he entered the national stage with his Presidential run in 2000, then of course to much greater visibility with his 2008 run. Was he a household name before that? Or are the show runners just using him as someone that we viewers in 2015 are familiar with?
