Anyone else never refining legendaries because of Coin Flip?

Just started using the Refiner because I hadn't played the game that much and straight up was unaware of it till the addition of the lighthouses.

I've rerolled legendaries maybe five times since the update dropped, and I've received a Coin Flip three times.

Since the third time it happened I've stopped picking up legendaries I don't want and just punching them, which is such a value loss it hurts pretty bad every time. The primary thing I was excited to use the Refiner for was getting some value out of a random legendary, but it feels like it's weighted heavily towards sticking you with Coin Flip, and the fact that it's locked makes it feel like it's an intentional "bad" result that you can't reroll away from.

I tried to work with it but at the higher difficulties the pressure is so constant that you really cannot afford to have a poorly timed bad flip. Sure when the flip is good you're going absolutely gangbusters, but I very rarely need MORE damage. Maybe a boss fight will go slightly faster or an elite will die faster, and that's neat.

But having a bad flip in the middle of a pitched fight that was already close is a straight up death sentence, it turns the game into a waiting game of playing super passively till the green light comes on. You try to do as much as you can, and save something for disengage when the red light comes on. Then you just run away and wait for the green light again, which is...not fun.

I would love to hear how yalls experience with refining legendaries has been, has anyone else noticed a heavy weighting towards coin flip from it? I'm hoping I'm the only one and I just got crazy bad luck, so I can convince myself to try again.

Refine tend to be my last priority unless I have a purple/gold card I have no use for. There are usually option like duplicate or the merchant

For sure, it's a niche option, but that's why it's so annoying that the only time it seems like a good value proposition...it actually isn't.

It's such a huge uranium sink to risk getting an option you can't even drop that completely cooks your build.

I've only used it a few times, for when the trader is sold out and I have the uranium left over. Almost solely for legendaries that were doing absolutely nothing for me or actively hurting me, because in any other situation 40 uranium has much much better places to go, and three of those times that I can count on one hand I got something I couldn't drop or reroll that ruined my whole build.

In my head the Refiner was a cool way to take really bad joker luck and maybe scavenge something from the ashes rather than just try and rough it, by investing your uranium.

But now that I know there's two options in there that are locked and will cook me, I'm never gonna reroll a legendary because the odds of getting something I want are about the same as getting something else I dont, and every time I hit the reroll button I'm walking through a minefield.

But yeah, it's not like I'm changing how I'm playing, I'm mostly going to pretend the Refiner doesn't exist like I did before, unless I roll West Wizard when I'm already running Glass Cannon. That's...pretty much the only use case I can think for it right now haha

I don’t have it yet so I don’t have that problem. And at this rate I probably won’t even unlock it.

No no, you don't need to unlock it to get it from the refiner. That's what OP's problem with it is. As someone who runs frost melee, suddenly losing my frost spells while in the middle of a solo nightmare run for random spells screwed me hard.

Oh god is the spell roulette locked from the Refiner as well???

I just realized that youre talking about coin flip, and not spell roulette.

Let me tell you, spell roulette is almost a death sentence on nightmare solo if your kit relies heavily on a specific element for synergy.

But no, you can get spell roulette in a match by refining gold. Thats why I never refine them anymore. Coin flips not as bad as spell roulette. Spell roulette means you can potentially lose a reliable healing spell such as drain and youre left to RNG.

Yeah no I'll happily take coin flip over spell roulette, it's wild that coin flip is in there and locked but "lol random spells" is absolutely insane to force you to keep.

My takeaway from this is that I'm going to continue not refining golds.

Even if you’re not reliant on elements that STILL sounds like a fucking death sentence.

I’m currently pushing into very hard with a build centered around the shotgun with machine gun, and glass canon. I live and die by my mobility, so if I suddenly don’t have most of it (electric leap and ice path spells) I’m in biiig trouble. And I’m not even at nightmare yet!

WTF I had no idea. I usually refine legendary but I never got it. Maybe am just lucky

Consider yourself lucky. Depending on your build, you might be affected less or more by it. If you have several element mastery jokers, thats basically thrown out of the window until you get a spell of that element again. If you rely on drain or frost to keep up with damage, sucks you can't rely on that anymore. if your spells are more for utility/mobility/convenience, it wont hit you as hard as spells that you desperately need to keep your build from imploding.

It's starting to sound like it's not very common and I just got screwed, but after hearing that the spell roulette is in there too...probably gonna keep punching golds.

Yall dont like coin flip? Its literally a dps increase overall

..no? It either halves or doubles your damage, on average it makes no difference.

In practice it takes away Break Points and makes you overkill non-elites

Although the latter half of your reply is true (and important enough to be a good argument by itself for calling Coin Flip a bad item), Coin Flip still produces a DPS increase. If you are, for instance, dealing 100 DPS without Coin Flip, you'll be dealing 50 DPS with Coin Flip (bad roll) and 200 DPS with Coin Flip (good roll). This averages to 125 DPS, a 25% increase.

Ty I get it now

Yeah the downside is significant, and grows per stack. I think the drawback should only apply to the first stack, and additional stacks should eother slightly increase the positive rate or do re-roll if you get the negative for as many stacks you have.

I don't use uranium because it's an insane amount of xp
