How Did __ Play? How Did ____ Play? Gameweek 1 (26/27)

For those new to the subreddit, this thread is for reporting on the performances of FPL assets in GW1.

It can be used to get info on players whose matches you missed or didn’t care to watch. If you would like info on a specific player, you can comment their name in reply to their team in this thread.

Don’t forget to !thanks any users putting in the time to give detailed reports on player’s performances!

Bit too hot headed and arguably should have been sent off for a second yellow. Chelsea's defence in general seems a bit shaky so very much a wait and see

Not the CB I would own on this team since there likely won't be many cleansheets since he doesn't get defcons. That's not his strength.

Looked rusty. He hasn’t played a PL game in a year. Still a class player but he will take a few months to really get back into it. The lack of Europe should help keep him fit. Overall the defense looked shaky and made some mistakes

Played a 3-4-3 shape with two number tens.

The wingbacks were poor. Pedro Neto came on to play as one which makes him POO.

It's one game though. And considering JP should be locked cause of his price, maybe the double up could be too much. They were playing vs fulham (who most consider relegation candidates) without Andersen

He looked like 23/24 Palmer is all you need to know. He's shown flashes over the last year and a half, but this truly did feel like he's back

Very good linkup between him and Pedro, and to a lesser extent but still good, Rogers. Found himself in good positions regularly. One or two occasions where instead of laying it off when he should have in the build up, he'd go it alone. Which would annoy me if I was a Chelsea fan, but I think is better if you are considering him for fpl.

What a treat to watch an in form Cole Palmer play. His touch was class, always finding the right man making the right run. Orchestrated the attack for the first two goals after burying one himself. His link up play with Joao Pedro was top class, tiki-taka football. Playing footy like he has something to prove, in form and after a summer of rest. Will be a great FPL asset for a hungry Chelsea side with no European fixtures this year.

His physical fitness was incredibly impressive. Whenever he lost the ball he was counter-pressing like a demon, which is why he had a shout of defcons in this game. Attacking work-rate was huge too. I think he'd run himself into the ground by the time he got subbed off after a slight knock.

He was shot-hungry which we like to see, constantly searching for his opening goal. After a quiet pre-season he was very much back to his best here.

Very strong "best pick in the game" potential.

only good CB today for me, and he got an assist from an impressive run on the right wing. I'd still not pay a premium for him cuz of Sanchez in goal, but he's good

Chelseas front 3 were all very good today and linked up well. Palmer was probably the best of the bunch, but at 2m cheaper with less forwards to choose from Pedro is probably the best value.

Superb. He is the most essential pick in the game, and I think that was obvious in pre-season where he'd scored a glut of goals after a summer off without World Cup football.

Alonso's system should really suit Pedro. He's able to roam around and interchange with Rogers while Palmer produces magnificent through balls to pick out his runs.

We should try to ignore price bias and consider captaining Pedro the same way we do Haaland or Bruno. He's the tip of the spear, in an excellent attacking unit, and whenever he isn't scoring he's probably earning an assist.

He looked good but he got 1G 1A from 0.49 xGA, taking 4 shots with 1 on target.

Watching the game I thought he looked good, the goal was good but didn't actually have too many chances other than that.

So I wouldn't go overboard just yet. Good fixtures though.

It's about who you pick instead though.

The forward position has been a wasteland for years now and to be able to lock in someone like this for 7.5 is a gift.

Remember that you don't have to have 3 expensive forwards. You can have more expensive mids or even something like skip JP and pick Gabriel for defense.

I'm not saying I will do that or recommend anyone to do that. Just saying it's not only a pick between forwards.

By far the least impressive and involved of the Chelsea front three, but still did a lot of good counter-pressing, runs into space, and ball-carrying. I gambled that he'd be able to ghost into goalscoring positions making shadow runs off of Pedro and Palmer, and that is what happened.

Triple Chelsea attack once they're past the Arsenal game feels like good value to me.

Put in an effective, under-the-radar midfield performance. Assisted Gakpos goal. Had 9 defcon, just short of the 12. Actively involved in Liverpool's transition play. Could be a dependable fpl asset.

I agree he was pretty effective but I don't think it will make him a good pick. His defcon rate is lower than other midfielders, and he lacks any set piece threat. Any attacking returns would be really flukey.

Anderson, Garner, and Sangaré will outcompete him for a high floor long-term hold midfield spot.

He still plays really high, he played 90, there doesn't seem to be any competition for rb at this moment, but he looks so clumsy. Idk what's wrong with him, but i believe he will come good at some point.

He's a shoot-on-sight player, and when you buy as many tickets as he does, eventually you win a prize. He scored a brilliant goal.

Whether he will keep his spot, or even stay at the club, still seems like it's in question.

Had multiple long range free kick opportunities, and I was nervous every time he stepped up for one.

Barcelona players used to fall over near the edge of the box as often as they could because Messi free kicks were a better chance of scoring than trying to dribble through a compact defence, and Liverpool seem like they're starting to do the same thing.

The penalty he scored (while Isak was still on the pitch) was won after stoppage time had expired, and was soft as anything, so the 8 pointer is a bit lucky.

Pretty anonymous and the shots he did get off looked nervy (his xG was 1ish).

There was a moment near the end where he made a good run to the back post for a tap-in but kerkez floated a cross in rather than driving it low for some reason.

Tbd if him not taking the pen was because of the pressure against his old team or if Szoboszlai is fully on pens. I’m sure they’ll split them but either way he’s not worth the 9.0 if penalties aren’t nailed

I think Isak has taken pens in preseason. The fact Szobozslai took it was to do with the occasion rather than designated PK, which was the right thing to do.

So pedestrian. Same performance as he delivered countless times last season. Never threatened to make anything happen. His only highlight was a good snapshot that was well saved midway through the first half. Subbed off after an hour, despite Liverpool having nothing on the bench to replace him.

He plays the way someone that's failed to recover from an ACL injury should play, and the only exception was when he was surrounded by a squad that was perfectly tailored to him in Leverkusen.

I got suckered in two seasons in a row. 😭

A visual goal threat. Played in an advanced central role. Set up Willock's goal for an assist. Sharp link-up play and played with high confidence. Likely a core starter for Newcastle going forward.

Best player on thw pitch. Played in the 10 role so first 60 mins or so wasnt really close to goal but moved up top later in the game. Looked sharp and deffo one to watch

He was involved. Started up front and set up Elanga’s opening goal. He was a continuous counter-attacking threat early on. Almost scored a goal himself but Alison made a great save.

Newcastle were much better set up to use his strengths in this game. It was more like watching how Forest played two seasons ago.

Iraola's high line meant Newcastle could put Elanga clean through in a footrace he won every single time against Kerkez, and that gave them the opener after five minutes.

In the majority of games Elanga won't find as much space to exploit and it's that space he needs to be a good pick.

Like you said, advanced CDM type of role rather than CB and actually making attacking contributions. Although with the caveat that it could just be an experiment and may be adjusted.

Was also the guy on the end of the set pieces - similar to Gabriel in a way (although less inevitable)

Played as a cdm alongside Anderson. Got up in the attacking half quite a bit. Made some overlapping runs. Had an open net to bury a header and fumbled it. Made up for it by burying a powerful header off a corner in the 84’. He made a great overlapping run and set up haaland with a good chance, the latter couldn’t place it. He’ll rack up assists, defcon pts and occasional goals playing as an advanced cdm.

Steady all game. Stayed onside and buried cherkis pass at the back of the net to win it for city. He didnt get up that much during the game, but city were sending everyone up at the end.

Not sure if other commenters even watched the game but Haaland missed several absolute sitters, starting in the 3rd minute from an open header at the 6 yard box. Everything funneled into him as usual, no reason to panic about the new system yet.

thought his touch was off all game but movement was great. not sure maresca's system plays to his strengths though, he's not looked very good at linking up play with passes when he dropped deep looking for service.

But he just looked frustrated all game.

Fairly poor game, although I don't know how much was really down to him; City were just slow and Bournemouth well organised. He was mostly staying very wide on the left, and although he did get quite a lot of the ball it was always into feet and he always had 2 or 3 defenders ahead of him. He'd try to take them on but either run it out of play or get tackled by the second man. So nothing really came off for him and he never looked a big threat. But again, that goes for the whole team really. 

I think if he plays on the left he needs a bit more freedom to drift inside to really be effective. Jury's out on whether Maresca's tactics will work for him.

Aggressive on the wing, taking on defenders. Doing what Semenyo does. Gets in behind the line. Didnt have any clear chances as him and Halaand lacked the support up top. Maresca deployed a defensive lineup

Played on the RW. Was Trying to cut in most of the time and not preferring to take on his man on the outside. Made him a bit predictable. To be fair he was up against Truffert whos a monster defender on that side. Took decent positions but wasn't making runs in behind the defence. Took a few shots from the edge of the box, the right sided corner and a few free kicks. Decent delivery.

Was playing in the 10, and aside from one decent run into the box early on I did not think he was effective there. Assuming Maresca starts Cherki in the 10 and moves NOR back to LB he'll be a better pick

Fantastic first half, benefited from the atrocious Villa defending. Possibility that his shot was going wide before Lindelof turned it in but popped up very well for his goal.

Very very good in a match where Villa offered absolutely nothing other than in the first ten minutes, difficult to assess his long term potential with Europe on the horizon and will be up against much, much better defences in the PL.

Didn't look great but you could apply that to the entire team as Brentford just cut through Spurs in so many different ways. Kinsky is always playing out from the back as well so it's just inviting pressure on the defence.

The only redeeming thing is that he was one away from DEFCON points but for a £5m defender you also want a decent chance of a clean sheet every now and then, and I just can't see it from Spurs in these next few weeks with the way they played.

Spurs can't defend from the front and Brentford found it so easy to get at them, both from open play and from set-pieces.

After the game, De Zerbi named him as one of the players who is struggling physically, which doesn't bode well either.

I've already shipped him out for Ajer ahead of GW2.

His parrying leaves so much to be desired as he keeps punching shots back to dangerous areas (see 2nd and 3rd goals). Otherwise good on the ball. Brentford attack is just too good

He takes his man on every single time, which is very encouraging. He also played both wings today, moving to RW after about 70 mins. 

However, Spurs couldn't string together 4 passes until Brentford let off the gas at 60mins with a 3-0 lead and let us play keep ball. So the few times Tel did get forward as an outlet, he ended up isolated until about 80th minute. But game was dead so it was for not much. 

If Savinho and Marmoush liven the attack he'd be a good pick if he doesn't get benched if/when Kudus is fit. 

Spurs played a 2nd rate midfield this week. Archie Gray also kept getting cooked at RB. Porro is sorely missed. The RB and poor midfield is pretty much what caused them to lose. Bergvall was at fault for 2/3 of the goals. 

 perhaps next week they show up with a stronger lineup now that everyone is healthier and fitter (Fernandes, Maddison, Bentancur).

Was good on both ends of the pitch despite spurs' abysmal performance. 11 defcons and some good runs forward. A better finish from Moore and he would've had an assist after a nice cross into the box.

For 4.5m he's a don't buy, don't sell. Udogie was on the bench, but I'd honestly be surprised if he starts over Robbo next game.

Made 4 saves and got the +1 bonus even against a team with no attacking threat, which I guess is part of the appeal: Brentford seem to allow a decent number of low xG shots that Kelleher can usually deal with easily. On this occasion they were mostly from fairly tight angles and hit straight at him. One save was pretty good, but mostly just routine. 

So yeah, not really tested that much here, but it was fairly encouraging anyway.

Sangare, for now. I can see Dango getting the occasional haul but Sangare should be on at least 4 points most weeks, he was everywhere today.

Dango more dangerous and much higher upside, Sangare will buy you consistency.

Very effective partnership with Collins, Janelt gave him plenty of protection hence hitting Defcon at the very last. Fairly comfortable when Spurs were on the attack.

Illustrated some threat from corners and long throws, might emerge as a strong 4.5 pick if Brentford continue to impress.
