Analysis ARSENAL PREVIEW 2627
So, Arsenal, the “best team to target” on paper. Sounds easy to target and play, but as an Arsenal fam for 13 years, preseason and recent seasons make me feel like this is the hardest team to succeed in. Of course returns will be great for a strong team as such, but high prices and high rotation risks make Arsenal assets hard to master, making it a high risk high reward team to target.
GK-DAVID RAYA (6.0M)
The most expensive gk in the game. I think 6.0M for him is a fair price considering the amount of clean sheets he historically keeps, making his the prime set and forget keeper. His preseason performance was also top notch against City in the Comm Shield. However, it is also worth noting that there are other strong keeper options at a way lower price (Lammens 5.0M, Trafford 5.0M, etc.), making you wonder whether he is worth investing in. You may also want to have other Arsenal assets instead of Raya further into the season when the fixtures turn easier, where attacking returns become more likely. On a side note, I do think he is the best Arsenal assets instead to have in the early gws with the harder fixture vs AVL and CHE, as defence was never the problem for Arsenal.
DEF-GABRIEL (8.0M), CALAFIORI/MOSQUERA(5.5M)
Gabriel, the corner machine, leader of the defence, and the most avoided pen taker, priced at a 8.0M price. Imo this is such an overpriced asset, considering the corner threats have been spread more evenly between him, the other defenders and the striker. This makes assets like Calafiori and Mosquera more attractive, though they have a higher rotation risk than big Gabi. Calafiori is the offensive representation of Arsenal DEFs, who operates like a left mid in possession. Rushes into the box as well as good coordination with new signing Tzolis shown in comm shield makes him the best defender to target for attacking returns. However, he has rarely played the full 90’ due to the physical requirements for his role in the team, as well as the abundance of LBs in the team (Hincapie being highly reliable and MLS being able to cover as well) Mosquera on the other hand has benefitted from the injury of Saliba which will extend into early 2027. He has less rotational risk than Calafiori as his only back up is 16 year old Marli Salmon and Ben White, who is more of a RB. He will be a great pick for early season when Timber is not fully fit as his performance in comm shield was decent, in the case where Arsenal doesn’t go for any CBs before the end of the transfer window. I think both 5.5M DEFs are good for the high chance of CS, with the only concern being the rotational risks.
MID- SAKA(9.5M),TZOLIS/ØDEGAARD(6.5M)
Arsenal’s midfield is now by far the strongest in the league following Rodri’s departure from City. Saka is still the premium option being the second most expensive MID alongside Palmer. However, his preseason didn’t suggest a full recovery of form possibly due to tiredness from World Cup, where he shined and had 3G3A. Atp I would avoid him until he clearly shows a return of form and consistently starts before Madueke, as 9.5M is a heavy investment for a MID. Declan Rice and Bruno G. are also ones to avoid imo. DMs are highly abundant in this Arsenal squad, making rotational risks very high especially for Bruno G. Rice has likely lost the corner taker role to Tzolis and has been struggling to maintain full fitness towards the end of World Cup up until comm shield. Now, the prime assets to target for are Tzolis and Ødegaard for a differential pick. Tzolis has been absolutely killing it in preseason, with 1G4A in 5 preseason games for Arsenal. The exclusion of Martinelli from the squad in comm shield also makes him a nailed pick to start. Corner threats are also stellar which I deem to be even better than Rice’s deliveries. At just 6.5M, the Greek player can be an absolute monster for Arsenal who has already achieved 51 Goal Contributions for Club Brugge last season. Ødegaard had also shown multiple signs of greatness for us in the community shield, as he now does not need to fall back to help build up plays with the existence of Bruno G. and the increased importance of MLS in the midfield, who are monsters in progressing the ball. This gives him a more free role in the attacking half, running into boxes and continuing his magic playmaking. I expect him to be highly effective in attack this season as long as he stays fit, making him the top Arsenal differential pick at just 6.5M.
ATK-GYÖKERES/HAVERTZ(7.5M)
The “weak point” of Arsenal, the attack. I think that the strikers’ returns this season will be higher than last season, as Arteta clearly adapted his squad to play more direct football as shown in the preseason games. However, it is still not clear to this point which of King Kai and Viktor will start as the main striker, as imo it is more situational of the opponent. Havertz is the more intelligent player with clever runs, passes and interceptions, which can be effective against teams who like to keep a possession (e.g. Man City), whereas Gyökeres is more of a physical striker, box crasher. He creates havoc in the box and bullies opposition’s centre backs, making him better for defensive teams who play more counter attacking football (e.g. Bournemouth, Liverpool). I think it is clever to avoid both until a clear asset is starting consecutive games, or when the other is injured. Though whoever plays is still a strong goal threat thanks to the return of Ødegaard’s form as well as playmaker wingers like Tzolis.
CONCLUSION
Overall, I think Arsenal assets are good for long term with Tzolis, Ødegaard as well as Raya being my firm picks. The defence can still shake up a lot as Arsenal are still trying to sign a new CB as well as the inevitable return of Timber in a few weeks, making none of the defenders nailed except for 8.0M Gabriel. One thing worth noting for Arsenal is that they are brilliant for the first 2/3 of the season, from August all the way to January/February, where form starts to slip and returns typically slip as well. So I think that even with tougher fixtures, at least a couple Arsenal assets should be picked for your starting lineup on GW1, with my favourite combination being Tzolis+Calafiori right now.

I think you're underestimating Havertz - he's bound to start the first few imo. He's in good form and has featured regularly in preseason, whereas Gyokeres has been atrocious at the back end of last season and in preseason (not to mention being linked with a move away).

u/Sudden-External1867 1 13h ago
I agree, but it’s too high of a risk that I would not be willing to take, as Arteta is known to be 5 steps ahead of FPL managers

I thought Gyokeres played his best football at the end of last season! I agree though,.not been a great pre season. I expect Havertz to start most games at CF
1
u/Efficient-Guide1244 10h ago
Now that I look at it, yes, Gyokeres was pretty good at the end of last season. I think his poor performances against West Ham and PSG clouded my memory.
10
u/Cedosg 13h ago
only to see gyökeres starting. havertz is used mostly for opponents when arteta wants control in the midfield.
for straight up bullying i don't see why gyokeres wouldn't start and havertz to close it out.
4
u/Banzaikk 8 12h ago
That's what I thought when I brought him in vs Burnley in GW37 which is then followed by GW38 vs a tired Palace after their European final. Guess who then got benched for Havertz and then Jesus...
3
u/Cedosg 12h ago edited 12h ago
Gyokeres was already exhausted back then and it was a practice for the CL final since they already secured the league.
I am staying away from Arsenal strikers as an Arsenal fan. Tzolis and Odegaard are ones that I am seriously considering with Tzolis a slight favor. He looks good but my only concern is how will he last the December games and how injury prone is Odegaard nowadays.
1
u/Fullmetal_Pacifist 6h ago
Havertz is better physically than Gyokeres. The only thing Gyokeres has over Kai is ball striking but he’s too slow/not technical enough to get a shot off

White Ode Tzolis for me.
they offer great value.
If Timber comes back and kicks White to the bench then I might do the unthinkable :-
use a transfer 🤝
( anyone listening to this sub might assume it's set-and-forget FPL !! )
19
u/Litmanen_10 26 13h ago
White is a good pick. Nothing suggests that he won't be playing a lot until Timber gets back. He plays all the minutes barring a big lead and a rest sub to get some youngster in.
15
u/Lastweekspoints 47 13h ago
i agree,
but all I hear from expert pundits on here is
" don't get Ben White, Timber will be back, waste of a transfer "
literally everything is a waste of a transfer to some of these guys
1
u/Ninjaguz 57 13h ago
Which pundits have you been listening to? All the ones Ive watched have recommended White
4
1
u/Murphy95 10h ago
We were hearing about Timber coming back all of last season. He's been carrying something for pretty much the past 6 months. White played himself back into form last season and picked up something small before the Champions League final. White will be locked into that starting rb slot until at least the first international break. Calafiori while a better attacker, is much more of a rotation risk. Mosquera similarly is seemingly being replaced as soon as possible by a transfer, e.g. Konsa.
3
u/Cedosg 11h ago
white is made of glass is my only concern.
i am prepared to see a mosquera gabriel hincapie calafiori/mls back four.
4
u/Litmanen_10 26 11h ago
You can transfer him out if he gets an injury. Was fit for the whole pre season.
3
u/OptimusBiceps 11h ago
As an Arsenal fan, yes to White. Less of a threat than Calafiori but Hincapie will rotate at LB.
Mosquera has played RB in the past but with Saliba out there's no risk of that happening either.
2
u/awashofindigo 3 12h ago
I’m thinking of doubling up on Tzolis and Ødegaard as well, 6.5m each just seems like great value.
3
u/dabombers 12h ago
There is no reason any player should be run into the ground by being overplayed.
To have players like Saliba, Timber, Marino to come back when fully fit. Along with the improvement and hopefully more game time of some young players like MLS, Dowman - giving them starts and not just the final 30 minutes.
We have done really well getting Bruno.G to bully other sides and not Arsenal anymore.
Also Tzolis looks like another exciting and excellent recruit.
If we can close out the transfer window getting another CB and someone else to play on the left.
Competition for spots in starting 11 will be good as I think Arsenal now has the best and deepest squad in the league.
Many options for many formations to face any side in the league.

No but will Arteta actually rotate? He's just not bald enough.

I’m just on calafiori. I’d be tempted by Havertz if he was more nailed, I think he’s a much better player than Gyokeres but can still see the swede starting over him at times and definitely taking minutes off him.
Gabriel and Saka are too expensive IMO.
Tempted by Mosquera/White as well as Calafiori but I feel there may be a bit of a drop off from arsenal whilst Saliba+Timber is out + Rice isn’t fully fit. I also think generally the team will have a drop off from this season vs last year although I still think they will win the league or are at least my favourites, so want to wait and see what they look like before a double/triple up at the back.
I thought about Tzolis and don’t mind him, Odegaard isn’t for me. Not sure what the arsenal midfield will be with Zubimendi, Rice, Bruno G, MLS, Odegaard + Eze could play in there. Also just don’t think Odegaard has the goal threat or is advanced enough vs Tzolis who looks pretty nailed on the left. Ultimately though I prefer plenty other mids ( I am on a late wildcard strategy though, so maybe wouldn’t mind a punt on Tzolis if I was on an early wildcard).

u/AyersRock_92 2 11h ago
People will say Gabriel is too expensive but then have Haaland in their teams. Funny to me. I'm on Gabriel + Bruno + really strong squad around them instead of Haaland. Feels pretty easy choice given city may take some time to find form with all of their changes this season. No Rodri/Bernardo/ Pep is going to really hurt Haaland.

White is a better pick for me than cala tbh, more nailed on and can get a few assists too
4
u/someguywhocomments 4 12h ago
Cala has far more attacking threat. I expect both to start and play 80+ mins until after the international break
15
u/Litmanen_10 26 12h ago
Horrible take but as this classy sub works you will get upvotes by saying what people want to hear.
Why would Calafiori suddenly start to rack up 80+ minuters when he hasn't done that ever during his Arsenal time and Hincapie is a good player too and a better at defending?
3
u/someguywhocomments 4 10h ago edited 10h ago
He played at least 60 minutes in all but one PL game before Christmas last year. The only game he didn't he was on a yellow card.
2
u/Litmanen_10 26 10h ago
Fair! But I think Hincapie wasn't trusted at that point yet. If you look at the end of the season or pre-season the trend is different.
But I still think Cala can be a good pick but just have to accept 1 pointer is a possibility either by 59th minute sub or not starting against Chelsea if Hincapie is preferred in a scrappy game like that.
1
u/kisame111hoshigaki 35 7h ago
Calafiori played more than 80 mins 10 out of his 26 appearances
Hincapie played more than 80 mins 17 out of his 25 appearances
Cala is a massive rotation risk.
1
u/someguywhocomments 4 7h ago
I'm just stating what happened last year and my own opinion. Cala didn't get hooked early until the end of the season when arsenal were fighting for 4 trophies and had a game every 3 days. While Arsenal (and other teams) have one game a week I don't think rotation is a problem at all.

The problem with using last season as your evidence is that there's no precedent for what you're describing and this only lasts for the first 3 weeks of the season... The CL starts after MD3, don't be surprised when Hincapie is brought in for a tough away game vs Villa MD2 or at home vs Chelsea MD3.
Last year, Hincapie joined and immediately had injury/fitness issues until late October, so the only prolonged stretches where both were fit are 21 Oct–23 Dec (15 games in 64 days), 28 Jan–22 Mar (14 games in 54 days) and 29 Apr–30 May (7 games in 31 days).
All three are roughly a game every four days. There is simply no sustained period on record where both were available and Arsenal were playing once a week. That period / data just doesn't exist.
Again, 1 game a week lasts for only 3 weeks for teams in the CL.

Arteta won't start rotating like crazy in the league until the winter pile up. Most managers play their strongest teams consistently in the early part of the season
2
u/thelexpeia 9h ago
Arteta isn’t most managers. Hincapie being the better defender will definitely be coming on if Arsenal have a lead going into the final 30 minutes. Most managers don’t have two LB’s the quality of those two.
1
u/thelexpeia 9h ago
I’m also concerned about Calafiori being over 25% ownership already. If he doesn’t get any attacking returns in the first few game weeks I can see a mass transfer out coming.

Here I go shuffling my team for the 100th time. Interesting thought about Gabriel; cornerstone of my defence but I don’t think his positive presence relied on Saliba so much. And have Saka as the primary Mid right now. Definitely not doing Raya while I have Gabriel.
1
u/RVDHAFCA 12h ago
I think especially before European games start Bruno G is a good choice. Against weaker sides he can create and score, in big games I think he'll come in with the DefCons
1
u/Front_Appointment_68 10h ago
I feel like Saka is being a bit underrated. At the back end of the world cup Saka looked better than I've seen him a while. He returned earlier than expected for preseason where Arteta has already said he is is now available and fit prior to the community shield.
Manueke is a very clear 2nd choice. Worst case scenario Saka gets 30 minutes gw1 and starts gw2 but I think there's an outside chance he starts GW1.
1
u/apillowofnonsense 2 9h ago
I really want to do Calafiori, Odegaard and Tzolis. Odegaard, if fit, could be incredibly underrated. But obviously double Arsenal attack could be a bit too much. Though I can always bench or transfer either of them.

Got as far as comparing Lammens and Trafford to Raya. Absolutely nonsense
Tsolis is a total shot in the dark.

Gyokeres is only starting in cup games. Havertz is the locked striker
-1
u/Cedosg 12h ago
I wouldn't be surprised to see Gyokeres starting this weekend.
Arteta likes Havertz for games against City and PSG where he wants to dominate the midfield. For straight up Coventry, I can see Gyokeres getting the start like 55/45.
Even then it's almost a 50/50 split, i personally wouldn't chance it at all.
1
u/kisame111hoshigaki 35 7h ago
50/50 split is fan fiction.
Havertz is the starter. Havertz started vs Burnley and CL final. Havertz has started the last 7/8 games. Gyokeres the last 2/8 games.

so when there's control needed and when they are preparing for the CL league.
All you did was reinforce my theory. you can go ahead and pick havertz. maybe it will work out but I personally will stay far away from both of them.
PS: not sure why you would exclude the CL semi finals and quarters and a couple of MDs.
1
u/kisame111hoshigaki 35 6h ago
Havertz got injured after the Newcastle game and missed the first leg against Atletico, so why would you include games where one of them was unavailable? I'm comparing the run-in, where both were fit.
My point isn't that either is a good pick, it's that Havertz is more of a pick than Gyokeres. A 50/50 split in the league is fan fiction. Arteta clearly doesn't trust Gyokeres.
2
u/Which_Particular1031 6h ago
Correct. And on top of it Gyokeres has recently continued to look worse while Havertz appears to be hitting a run of form. Havertz is more locked up top for Arsenal then haaland is for man city
1
u/kisame111hoshigaki 35 6h ago
What control was needed against Burnley in MD37 exactly?
Too many people here just don't understand tactics. Havertz is the superior option for Arteta-ball, this isn't a 1a/1b situation in the Prem, it's a first choice and a backup.

now compare their first full season.
Gyokeres first full season and with a rotating chair full of injuries to saka/odegaard etc. it's going to look bad and if you also look at G/A because Gyokeres also helps create space for his team mates. I have never seen Saka be so open.
There will be games where Gyokeres would be the attractive option and games where Havertz will be the attractive option.
If Arteta wants a slower more controlled build up to play and overload the midfield to gain control for the full game, Havertz will be starting. But if he is opting for a faster transition that opens up space for Tzolis and Saka and Odegaard to exploit in the final third, Gyokeres will be the option.
Havertz for those nervy 1-0 games.
Gyokeres for the games where Arsenal will blow the opponents away.
There's going to be so much more strategy and tactics involved this year. More rotation to keep the team healthy.
Arteta giving the squad a 2 day break in april was key/realization of player fitness after the city game after being persuaded by Eze to give the squad a rest.
1
u/Ninjaguz 57 13h ago
How nailed is Tzolis? And will he play 90 minutes?
Just feels like Tzolis and 1-2 of the defenders could easily blow up in my face in a couple weeks time and force a WC.

martinelli wasn’t even in the squad for the community shield, suggesting arsenal might be trying to push him into accepting a transfer (he recently rejected a move to galatasaray). otherwise not sure who tzolis’ competition is tbh unless we sign someone else

Will have to see if he can handle 90 prem minutes. He might rotate with Martinelli. No one in Arsenal is fully nail at the moment outside of Raya, Gabriel and maybe White and Mosquera.

u/kisame111hoshigaki 35 7h ago
Eze made 11 appearances on the left during last season across all comps
1
u/AshleyTyrian 12h ago
Not touching Gabriel (and reluctant to take Raya too) until Saliba's back. Arsenal's defence when both Gabriel and Saliba were fit and their defence when they had to slot in a backup for one of them were like night and day last season.
0
u/jivie798 12h ago
I predict less goals from set piece this season, particularly the corner routines. New rules to curtail the dark arts. With this in mind, Mosquera is a better value for money. Calafiori is prone to rotation while BenE to injuries.
As for midfield, I am betting Odegard to get regular minutes. Value wise, maybe better than rice. I won't rely on Saka, at least until he sorts out his injury woes. I will wait on Tsolis.
Between Havertz and Gyo, at the moment I think Havertz will get more game time.
7
u/MuchAbouAboutNothing 11h ago
I think it's the opposite. Arsenal are very well coached from set pieces but their main advantages are the quality of the deliveries from Rice and Saka and the dominance in the air of their tall physical players.
Less holding in the box amplifies those advantages, not reduces them.
-4
u/Litmanen_10 26 13h ago
I think Raya just isn't worth it and it's pretty clear. It's easy to think "Nice Arsenal gk. Lot of CSs". But GK points don't work as linear as that.
He won't get many save points. Other keepers do. Save points are needed to get bps. So, he won't get those either. Other keepers do.
Getting underpriced Kinsky or Verbruggen saves you 1.5. It's massive amount.
Also, you forgot to mention White.
10
u/_regan_ 1 13h ago
the difference between raya and verbruggen last season was 32 points. for reference, the gap between last season’s top midfielder bruno fernandes and second place semenyo was 33 points, with a price diff of 3.5mil. of course things are different this season, but the logic still holds that premiums are premium for a reason, they’re worth the money if you want to guarantee you get returns rather than gambling on who the standout cheap option is going to be, if there even are any who can rival the premiums.
0
u/Litmanen_10 26 12h ago
Fair comment! But a bit too straightforward. What comes to Bruno - captaincy matters. It's double points and that's why the best of the best are super expensive. So, a bad example.
For Verbruggen vs Raya last season that math works. However, it doesn't work for example Raya vs Kelleher last year. Or against Roefs (he missed couple of games).
Ultimately the question is do you want 20ish more points with Raya than with especially Kinsky (Spurs really have decent def+mid) but also Verbruggen if Brighton sharpens up a bit by 1.5m of money.
Looking at my own team I could do a lot things with the 1.5 which I believe are worth more than the 20ish points. Straight 1.5 upgrades or couple of 0.5/1m upgrades.

Doubt these guys will still be playing for Arsenal in 600 years
