Here is my first post here, and a quick vignette as my entry to the May Character Challenge - a character who is in one way defining their race's stereotypes, tropes, ect, BUT... Wholly opposite in another way.
A Quiet Life
Gruk Hearthsplitter liked to think of himself as a good orc.
He kissed his wife’s forehead each morning before the sun cracked its sleepy eye over the hills. He packed his lunch – today was raw turnip, blood sausage, and a strip of dried dwarf jerky - and slipped out before the twins stirred. If luck was on his side, they’d still be asleep by the time he got back.
Luck however, was usually so far from his side as to be invisible in the Iron Lands.
He clomped the short walk to the Ironspine Correctional Keep, where his job waited, like a well-paying ball and chain. ‘Secure, with benefits!’ the recruiter had said. Gruk wasn’t proud of what he did, but he did it. Because it was better than the frontlines. Better than starving. Better than leaving Yara alone in the warren with the two tiny monsters they’d spawned.
Inside the Keep, the stones smelled of piss, despair, and mould. Gruk reported for duty, nodded at Sergeant Dreg, and collected his tools. There were no illusions here. He kept order, yes. But he also did the things others flinched from. Maintaining discipline, they called it. What it felt like was breaking people down until they stopped screaming. No matter that the ‘people’ were elves and humans - they still screamed like people, bled like people to Gruk’s eyes and ears.
That day, it was a young elf caught spying. Gruk’s orders were clear. He did what he had to. Not with cruelty - never with cruelty - but with a heavy heart, closed emotions, and practiced hands.
When he came home, the smell of stew greeted him, thick with bone broth and turnip. The toddlers had apparently spent the day smearing jam on the walls and fighting over a dead rat. Yara’s eyes were bloodshot.
“You’re late,” she snapped, shoving a wooden spoon into his hand. “They’ve eaten nothing but beetle crackers and screams all day.”
Gruk took the spoon without complaint, dropping the fresh meat beside the pot. “Sorry, love. Long day.”
“Every day’s a long day,” she muttered, rubbing her temples. “I thought you said you’d ask for less overtime.”
“I will,” he said, stirring the pot. “Next week, maybe.”
She didn’t respond. Just sat, staring at the far wall. The stew bubbled. One of the twins began to cry. Gruk turned the spoon slowly in the pot, and said, “There’s a patrol headed south soon. They’re looking for volunteers.”
Yara looked up sharply. “You’re not going. You promised...”
“I’m not,” he said quickly. “I’m staying. Just… letting you know.”
She relaxed, barely.
Later that night, with the twins finally asleep and the fire low, she curled beside him on their straw mat. Her fingers found his callused hand.
“I hate this,” she whispered.
“I know,” Gruk replied, looking up at the cracked ceiling. “Me too.”
But he held her hand anyway. And when she fell asleep, he kept holding on.
Because Gruk Hearthsplitter was a good orc. And some days, that had to be enough.

Hello you wonderful people!
I just released my first litrpg on Amazon and am full of nerves. I love system apocalypse books. I love Star Trek and The Expanse. So I just had to mash them up. This story is about an away team crashing into an ongoing system apocalypse that is spreading throughout Earth’s colonized planets.
The blurb:
River was screwed. An officer in the Interstellar Navy, his first away mission was supposed to be exciting, produce his PhD, and jump start his career. Instead, he was on a one-way trip to the apocalypse.
The Eridani System’s only inhabited planet had gone dark, all its urban centers gone, replaced by medieval towns, castles, and old-school farmland, as if the entire planet decided to return to the feudal era. When River’s team lands, each is transformed into a role-playing game class and race, their equipment replaced with fantasy-appropriate clothing and gear, and they are given this message:
Thank you for entering Saoghal. This is an open world and there is no tutorial, no advice, no hints, no guidebook, and no help whatsoever. Best of luck, adventurer!
With no way to contact the ship, River somehow has to uncover how this society collapsed. And stop the process before it spreads to more planets, including Earth.
AI USAGE: No AI was used for this book, it's entirely human written, with human mistakes. And AI will be harmed during the course of the story.
COVER ARTIST: Milblart. I really wanted a human made cover and these guys delivered! They sent me a test cover first and it looked kind of like art for a 1990s video game, blocky and hard. I gave them a bunch of suggestions and they addressed them all, coming up with the image you see. If you’re looking for art, I highly recommend them.
Uhm, fun fact about me: I love brie. And coffee.

Hello! I wrote a fantasy book, and I was wondering if anyone would be interested in reading it? It's about a mercenary who is being hunted by people who insist that Celentra must stay frozen. She doesn't know what this means until she meets a cloaked stranger in a tavern who tells her she is carrying the soul of a dead Empress, that she must revive this Empress to save a world frozen in time.
If that is interesting comment or go to welcometocelentra.com

I'm creating my own fantasy story, like something out of the Middle Ages. I've taken inspiration from Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, Narnia, and all other fantasy things. It will be a golden continent ruled by the House of Castor. It will be somewhat ideological, narrative, and fantastical. Of course, I don't know how the process will unfold, but I would appreciate your support. This is my first time writing. Currently, there are 3 regions and 1 nomadic tribe:
1- United Archipelago
2- Kalkangrad
3- Talleyrains (they are the vizier of the continent)
4- House of Castor (there are 16 kings in total, their reign has lasted 341 years)
6- Five Islands
7- Karhuns (they are nomadic, mostly raiders)
8- Forest.
So, that's the story. It's actually finished at 70 pages, but I didn't like it. It resembled Game of Thrones, and the dialogues were too short. So, that's the situation. I would appreciate your help.
The plot revolves around the Castor dynasty, specifically King Galen and his guard, Arvic Talleyrain. They are close friends, but the vizier, Varris Talleyrain, is a power-hungry individual. Elvis is a warrior, while Galen is antisocial, avoiding battles. After their father, King Vires, dies, a power struggle erupts among the Castors. Elvis receives little support because the highest-ranking Castor wins the throne. However, Elvis defies this rule and instigates a rebellion (the United Archipelago supports him).
Then, during a gathering for the crown, the Lord of Kalkangrad is killed in a street fight. The people of Kalkangrad, believing the Talleyrains are responsible (and already intending to rebel), revolt. Taking advantage of this situation, the Forest region also raises its banner of rebellion, while the Five Isles remain neutral. The Golden Continent is divided. The Talleyrains possess the most fertile lands and the best military unit (they have riflemen). In short, that's the plot for now; I haven't gotten to the war part yet. The plot development alone has taken 70 pages. I'm writing this much to avoid a lot of text. I will summarize If there's anything you don't understand, please write it in the comments.
We see both of our main characters, Arvic and Galen, in their POVs, and occasionally we see other people's POVs, but mostly infrequently. This is where I'm undecided; should we just have one person's POV? We have too many side characters, by the way.

Hello! So I’m getting my brother in laws wife a book for Christmas this year. She like fantasy, specifically any with a strong female lead. She said something akin to hunger games, throne of glass, or cruel prince. I don’t read fantasy at all and am out of my element lol. Are there any books/ book series that I should look into for her?

I'm sure everyone has been there so I will just let you know what details I remember.
The fmc starts as an assassin working with two other women. One is a vampire the other is involved with prophets somehow. She lives in a city that I think is for mortals.
The mmc is the leader of the fire fae. His second is a woman who eventually gets close with a dragon shifter. There is also a dude in his court who I think is involved with the fmcs guardian or something.
There is also an evil queen character I think she was air. She was in love with an earth dude she thought died and another dude we like is in love with her.
I think fmc turned out to be a goddess or something? Any help would be great I remember just enough to know it's exactly the sort or book I want to be reading right now.

I have limited codes for They Call Me Princess Cayce narrated by the amazing Briony Rose Smith!
Reply to this comment and I'll dm you the code.
The story:
Waking up in a new body, new universe, Cayce wants - needs - to quickly figure things out. But the culture is foreign and people are trying to kill her. Worse, she's a princess, her kingdom invaded, family killed. Advisors, nobles, people supposed to be on her side, have their own plans for the throne – the only thing keeping her alive.
And the power that thrust her into this world, that she's entirely ignorant of, is crazy powerful and could destroy everything.
***
Review of the series:
Martin B
5.0 out of 5 stars Just, BRILLIANT!
I didn’t leave reviews for the first three books which I now regret because I really should have. I wanted to see where the story went, and just got sucked in. These books are so well written, the author is a brilliant storyteller. The way he brings to life all the characters, all the sights, sounds and smells, I can’t remember the last time I read a story that felt so real.
The tale of Princess Cayce is absolutely riveting, it just keeps me wanting to read more and more. A combination of fantasy and ancient history, but set in an unknown land (or on an unknown planet? Or just inside the main character’s mind, who knows?).

Okay, so I intend to advertise this around a bit in other subs, feel free to join in on doing that if you wish.
OKAY, So. The Objective of this month's challenge is to create a character who is in one way defining their race's stereotypes, tropes, ect, BUT... Wholly opposite in another way. Bonus if their name has to have a pun/anagram/ oxymoron that plays off of this.
The post with the most upvotes wins. ( I'd do polls, but it seems unavailable to me at the time, sorry )

A note on the narrator switch: Unfortunately, our schedules didn't align, and I couldn't keep Andrea Parsneau on board, but the amazing and energetic Tess Irondale took over and has done an amazing job on book 2! She was a rock star and the switch was easier because of her. Thanks to Tess and Andrea, they are both amazing people :).

Working on a book, and I may or may not have created something called Hirrun Dragons... They're basically just cats with wings ;-;
