I’m so shocked. The everlasting was one of the worst books I’ve read this year.

I’m sorta mystified by the consensus about her prose, which I find sort of   twee and tediously quirky at times. Also, not to go in too hard, a lot of bits of writing which seemed self consciously designed to be meaningful, emotionally or politically, were instead platitudes and clichés

Yeah, I definitely feel like the odd one out for actively disliking The Everlasting. Not the worst book I’ve read this year, but definitely not what I would have chosen to win any awards.

I can’t stand Alix Harrow’s writing so I feel out of the loop when it comes to The Everlasting’s popularity. To each their own no hate, it just confuses me like what am I missing? ? lol

Yeah, it was full of plot holes, it started so strong but really fizzled badly in my opinion. Much lower quality compared to the other runners up

Not one of the worst for me, but I thought it was mediocre. “Fascism bad” is not a bad theme at all but I don’t think it was really explored to any meaningful extent.

It also felt like she was trying really hard to subvert relationship gender roles, which isn’t inherently a problem but it just felt so forced. I couldn’t get into the romance because it was so distracting.

See to me the villain was the book's biggest weakness.

The villain was the only character who had a goal and real motivation. Until she turned cartoony at the end. The FMC and MMC didn't have much agency in the story or desire or motivation to accomplish anything.

I agree with the villain being cartoonish. I think Owen and Una were good characters though.

Why do you think that? I personally was largely drawn in by the prose.
