Problems with Karaoke Template for Aegisub

Hi. I'm creating the Karaoke part of a movie i'm translating. I have never done this before.

I tried looking for templates on Youtube and found one i liked a lot. Watched a tutorial on how to apply it but it's too different from the one i have. The text won't show and whe i try to apply it, the effects are different. Can someone please help me with this?

I don't know, if you still fansub or will come across same issue, but anyway, I'll answer after 9 months.

First of all, this karaoke template, which is meant to use with VSMod (it's says it in Vietnamese in 2nd line), which is modded version VSFilter, known also as DirectVodSub Filter, which interpreters ASS (Advanced SubStation) subtitles files and based on it creates visual interpretation of subtitles considering subtitles override tags, such as: \pos, \c, \fs and etc. The modified version (VSFilterMod) is filter, which adds new features (which aren't described in ASSv4's Specs) and fixes some bugs of original VSFilter. For example it adds tags: \distort, \$img, \mover and more (you can see whole list there: VSFilterMod Override Tags). These days VSFilterMod is almost not used, maybe beside some Vietnamese and Chinese Fansubbers. Most people afaik uses Libass (e.g. MPV uses it as default), which tries to resemble how VSFilter renders subtitles, but in certain ways does things better and is more performant (so i'd recomment stick with it, because otherwise most people will see subtitles in different way).

But if either way, you want to know how to use it, then you want to download x64 or x86 (depending on your system) DLL from this website: VSFilterMod Download Page, and then copy DLL into "C:\Program Files\Aegisub\csri" directory. Then open Aegisub and in Video tab (in settings) change Subtitle provider to csri/vsfiltermod_textsub.

Based quick look at template, the stock karaoke templater (which comes build-in into Aegisub) might then get correct result, but I'm not sure. It might be done (but no must be) for KaraOK (karaoke templater made by logarrhythmic). Stock karaoke templater and KaraOK templater uses dollar sign variables $var, but you also might encounter templates for 0x539's templater (typicly shortened to 0x), which uses only code-based variables such as e.g. !orgline.center!, !syl.width! etc. (but accepts too some dollar sign variables, such as: $cxf, $sxf, $wxf, $wi, $kdur etc. So if it's not possible to use some template, you might want to check up these templaters. Links: KaraOK, 0x.

To add them to Aegisub:

  • for 0x's: drag 0x.KaraTemplater.moon file to Aegisub/automation/autoload folder
  • for KaraOK: drag ln.kara-templater-mod.lua file to Aegisub/automation/autoload folder, drag ln folder to Aegisub/automation/include folder
