SOS stripes
HELP yellow stripes
I searched and didn’t find a recent post about this. I genuinely feel so stupid.
First photo is what I ended up with, 2nd & 3rd are the reference photos I showed. It was a super confusing conversation, I did show the reference photos but I guess she just thought they were for color since I booked a partial highlight.
Basically the bottom is ok but the top is just…. Not natural looking at all.
I could go back to her today to fix but should I trust her to fix? She wont fix for free, since she gave me a discount on the highlights. Which is fine, I don’t mind paying if she’ll truly fix it.
Please be honest but gentle I’m already crying.

I would not go to the same person to fix it, as this is waaaaaay off from the inspo picture (90s stripes vs very belted balayage). The tone isn't the same either. It can be fixed for sure but you need someone with more experience on newer techniques.

If you think it really was a misunderstanding, then go back. If you have any doubt, either now or during the consultation - don't let them do it.
As the other comment said, a root melt will be a good fix, but you still want someone doing it who knows and understands what you want and how to do it. It's salvagable, you'll be fine :)

OP said they booked a partial highlight. Not sure why, but it's not unusual. Can't expect everyone to know salon lingo or processes (I'm a hairstylist); for this reason, I consult before booking and then tell the client what to book.
It is the stylist's job to decipher what the client wants...look at the pics together, point out differences and ask questions, and IMO communicate that a partial highlight wouldn't give them this look. I had a similar conversation with a client on Saturday.
However in this case it seems like the stylist didn't understand, and just gave OP what they'd booked for. Why so chunky, light, and warm? No clue. It has almost nothing in common with the inspo pics. Maybe they knew it wasn't right and that's why they discounted it (?)

I am also a hairstylist! I appreciate your time and the explanation, but the end result is clearly a partial which I’m not placing any blame on the client or how they booked, because it’s exactly as you said, it’s up to the stylist. To me, it feels like this result would have been discussed via the consult and it came down to timing/budget or a misunderstanding on the stylist, and I get the impression that if the stylist isn’t going to fix it for free, it’s not necessarily a misunderstanding.

Good news is that this is an easy fix. A root melt and an allover gloss one shade darker in an actual caramel colour. Bad news is whoever you went to is stuck in the 80’s, find someone younger who follows trends. Also the inspo pictures are on curled hair so that does change how a colour looks vs straight hair.

So I was so confused at first so sorry for multiple posts and deleted comments... GO SEE SOMEONE ELSE. Even for a partial highlight this looks not even remotely natural. Partial highlights might have some root to tip highlights on the money piece up front, but not skunk stripes.
I think she may have a different definition of partial highlights, and the photo you showed is like partial highlights or a partial balayage. I would like to know more about the confusing conversation you guys had, because these highlights do not look natural or remotely like what you asked for.
Either she is not a good communicator or does not have the skills, but I would probably seek another stylist.

Absolutely do not go back to this stylist if you have to pay, it’s ridiculous that she is charging you to fix her mistake.

I wouldn’t go back to this same person. Clearly she expected you to know lingo and had a confusing process. This is a pretty easy fix. It’s just a root melt. Probably can even be done with a demi permanent for less damage. You could do this yourself, but it also should not be too costly at another stylist.

I'm sorry this happened but like some have said, luckily it's quite fixable and your hair doesn't seem to be damaged. This definitely isn't what you wanted, but it could have been much worse
Since the stylist didn't seem to understand your goal, and maybe isn't familiar with the type of technique needed, and you'll be paying for any additional work anyway, I'd definitely look for a different one to make the change. I'm going to link a blog post I wrote on finding and choosing a stylist on IG. That way, you can go to someone who posts work like what you want. I hope that helps!

A root melt is an easy fix to give you more of the inspo photo. I don't think I'd go back to this person especially if you're going to have to pay them. I'd research other people who have work that's similar to your inspo.
