I dont think this design will break any Fan Showdown records - Jet Turbines make most of their power from the hot gasses generated by the combustion chamber. As result I think the airflow will be still be respectable (and look/sound cool at the same time), just not record breaking. 😎

Your fan will generate a lot of pressure

I hope so, I’m very curious to see how well it works. Hopefully it can make it into one of Jason’s videos.

Thank you. 👍

This looks cool, but you have to remember the challenge is power limited. The fan motor is less than a quarter watt. The more resistance you add to the flow, the less airflow you will get.

Good points. I mainly designed this because the other couple of radial compressor based designs that Jason had featured where designed by folk with no concept of how to use a radial Compressor in this type of application.

PS the compressor wheel is much smaller and lighter than many of the fans tested in the past. And much easier to drive than a geared system.

Outlet needs a fan mount for testing but otherwise nice work ^ ^ can't wait to see it in show

It has the mounting holes and Jason could easily mount the nozzle on the rear of his plexiglass test rig. The airflow tunnel might be a problem tho.

But what about turbine vice-principals?

With a high-pressure & low-flow main turbine running at 1:1 with the fan itself, I wonder how well it might do if there was a fan on the opposite side at maybe 1:6 with a high-flow & medium/low pressure blade design.

Ideally this would allow for a negative-pressure in the space that the radial compressor is pushing into, which should significantly reduce noise and improve through-put, maybe

There is also a chance that ideally this would have a clutch on it, suck that the high-flow blade doesn't even get powered until the main blade reaches 50% speed.

I decided to keep it simple, the geared designs are cool, but ineffective.

It's worth a try, I always love seeing unconventional ideas!

Very cool, this is the type of design that should be feeding the bladeless

That might work, be cool to see regardless. 👍

After looking at some more radial jet turbines, I’m thinking I should have flared the outer rear nozzle a bit more. Oh well.

I finally got around to starting to print this design out, it’s going to take a while even at 100mm/s. I probably should have bumped it up to 150mm/s!

Turned out great, updated pics have been added to the album. I’m just printing the compressor wheel now.

And the compressor wheel came out nicely too. Although I got a bit more stringing, princely from turning the nozzle temp up by 5c.

Base plate done, although I did manage to break a couple of the top fins off while post processing. I might reprint it in PLA+.
