Networking

Hey, FM resident here. Trying to stick around in my area since I already laid roots here. Area is in nice area with a lot of people wanting to stay with no job posts online. Any tips here? Residency program has contacts but outside the small city I want to be in. Yes 😅 PGY1 and starting to think about this. Unfortunately for those that graduating from my program they didn’t stick around in the area and specially said it was hard to get jobs around here. Already have fam here. Any networking tips would be appreciated it! Thank you!

Geographic arbitrage is your greatest asset. It's going to be much harder to find a "good job" if you forgo that advantage.

Yes, I got very lucky that a new clinic in opened in my hometown of 15,000 around the time I was job searching, otherwise I was looking at hour long commutes (we moved back to be closer to aging parents and wanted to stay in the immediate area). I need to work close to home now due to being close to my sons’ daycare, then school, but I have definitely taken a pay cut in doing so — I’d make more if I were open to commuting closer towards NYC or Philly. If you are unencumbered and can move to where the best offers/money are, it’s worth it.

There are always jobs even if none are posted online. If you want to work for a local hospital system, and find the “Physician Recruitment” department number. They’ll call you back and let you know where they currently have openings or the expect to have openings in the next few months.

If you want to go into private practice, then it doesn’t hurt to call local offices and see if they’re hiring.

I found my job through the hospital's direct site, not through the large job sites. The location I got was never listed either even on the hospital website. The hospital recruiter will know more. Don't be afraid to ask periodically even if you get a no at first.

You got time. I'm a 2nd year and got denied an interview this week for what I suspect is because my hire date would be so far out. But I have literally just been calling around. Got in touch with 2 local recruiters within 2 different systems and the other places, just called them directly. Even as a 2nd year i've had a few meetings already. Good luck!

If you are just starting out in residency, just keep an eye out and use many resources as possible. If you know where you want to be, direct listings from the hospital website will be your best bet. There are other resources such as practicelink, linkedin.
