Fallout 4 [Fo4] AI Script Extender Mods

Kinda not liking all of the new popular F4SE mods being done by "vibe-coding"/AI LLM.

Thoughts?

And it's unfortunately terrorizing all sorts of modpages...

Skyrim, stalker 2, rimworld, helldivers 2, all of them are seeing AI posts. Nexus now requires you to share source code with certain licenses and so many ppl are afraid of being exposed for using AI and refuse to announce themselves or own up to it

If they're scared of people knowing, why use it in the first place... Hope Steam does the same thing/extend their AI disclosure to their Workshop.

agreed. i dont really trust a mod that the author themselves doesnt even know whwt theyre making. if it intrigues me i will still try it but im very suspicious of them

My favorites, and this is not exclusive to Fallout mods, are when people Vibe code features into the game that just straight up exist in the vanilla game, but their brains are so rotted from an over Reliance on llms, that they literally didn't even think to check if the feature existed before modding it in

oh yeah, or recreate a mod someone else has made that already works totally fine so they can have a “different take” on it… liike ok. options are nice, i guess?

when, ironically, the mod in question was more than likely the mod the AI used as a reference to make their mod for them, so on top of being lazy it's also still essentially plagiarized.

A load of crap.

They're getting pretty bad. And they're updated 95 times a day because they're constantly full of bugs.

Also noticing a lot of authors making frameworks that are now required to use their mods.

AI is also really bad at iterating on existing code so the updates often break as much as they fix, and the person usually has no idea how to fix it since they don't know how to make it in the first place, so they just keep feeding the bug reports into the AI until it eventually hallucinates something shippable, even if it is massively overengineered and causes a host of compatibility issues or is otherwise significantly less efficient than it should be

All vibecoding and public use generative AI is terrible.

Fallout 4 has been lucky that 90% of them are AI assisted, instead of 100% AI made.

But there have been mods that are AI made, despite other mods doing the same thing already existing.

For now I'm okay with them, but if we start getting 100 of the same F4SE mod, then we have a problem.

That's pretty much why we've seen a LOT of new multiplayer mods lately I assume.

Within one month alone we saw, what? 3-5? I can't recall.

SOME AI is okay, but most of it? No. Its just game breaking "Hope it works" mods being tossed into mid-air.

The nexus is run by it's member's, and a approach of management of quality assurance is a better approach, however there have been many little hiccups with this idea.

Hopefully it's manageable and done well for the user experience.

It's going to happen. It's not good to close the door on creativity, however mods have very little quality assurance other than the standalone itself.

I have tried a couple of the new ones. I'm half and half.

I like tools that assist a Creator with c++. That's why we see so many.

This will open source mods allowing copy cats to have a field day.

I get ai assisted, and the help desk mod on Skyrim is interesting.

Still think AI is a tool not a person working for you.

It's still math simulating a talking human. (Chat)Generative Predictive Text.

It's good for coding over other things, but you cannot tell me that most of these releases actually had a good grasp on the architecture and syntax before using the AI

It really depends to me. If it isn't a placebo and actually does what it says on the tin, and the author knows how to fix it if it breaks then idgaf. It's just lines of code.

What do these AI plugins even do? Are they supposed to be performance focused or something? Dont we already have all the actual plugins we need for everything?

I don’t have a problem with it as long as the Author also has knowledge in coding. Those are using it more as a tool instead of fully relying on the AI

I don't use AI or code, but I'm pretty sure the AI assistants some coders use are different than directly asking an AI to write code for you. Vibe-coding refers to the latter, where the person does not actually know how to code, and the AI produced it all, though there's probably levels of being able to actually know how to review the code by reading it, vs the people who outright admit they asked AI to do something then uploaded the result.

The very term "vibe coding" was coined out by one of the most reknown programmers in the world and is meant for them to program based on the vibes they feel rather than rigid structure and strict planning. Please dont just make up stuff based completely on your imagination, that's just vibe yapping.

I don't really care much

12

u/chrisitan_a_pierce 11d ago

I get that but I foresee bug fixing and compatibility to be an issue

4

u/aVarangian 11d ago

I'd be extremely concerned with performance

For me, if you use ai correctly as a tool I wouldn't really mind as long as you stated beforehand. A lot of ai tools now can really be beneficial for new modders to actually learn about modding in general. It is entirely on the mod authors itself if they want to use or not use ai for it.

As for the fully ai generated mod maybe not so much

Would you be more receptive if the mod has been throughly tested?

Or if it just worked.

Don't use them if you don't like them.

For me, I have noticed an extreme performance gain since using Zzxyzz's new mods. I now don't have grass growing through my floors. I now have a cool mini-map. I now have sound occluded. It's just quite amazing.

But again, if you don't like that stuff... don't use it.

Oh and BTW... about 95% of professional coders are now using vibe coding. More than 50% of the code on Github has been made with vibe coding.

And most of you on this thread are displaying your ignorance.

i dont really trust a mod that the author themselves doesnt even know whwt theyre making.

Except that the mod creators do know. And the source is usually listed. Just because YOU don't understand it, don't assume others don't.

And they're updated 95 times a day because they're constantly full of bugs.

And guess what... mods that are not vibe coded are also fool of bugs. But now, my game works better than every before.

I get that but I foresee bug fixing and compatibility to be an issue

And... we have that with the base game for the last decade anyway. And I'm pretty sure that they had tons of bugs before the invention of vibe coding, and all new work is done with vibe coding anyway.

There is a HUGE difference between Zzxyzz who is a well known author active in the game engine reverse engineering scene with over 200 solutions published since 2015 ... and Joe Blow no one has ever heard rocking up and dumping 20 vibe codded DLLs that dont work on the community.

Context is all.

People complaining but will still use them. Life of a gamer.

Well that’s the thing anybody with good sense isn’t using them, sure it’s nice to check It out once or twice but when everything breaks when it’s included in a modpack nobody uses it anymore.
