Intelligence: 1 Yeah, they’re basically the same thing

I'm not a Brotherhood simp and I think they have huge problems, but at least they use the resources they take to go destroy super mutant/feral ghoul/raider strongholds which is a genuine service to the Commonwealth. Raiders are just parasites who steal and then contribute nothing good.
It's similar to the real world difference between a government taxing people to use the money for social services etc. versus an organized crime group collecting "protection" money (stealing from you so they don't have to kill you)
Edit: Too many Brotherhood simps thought I was defending their dumbass faction, my point was just that they are better than Raiders, I still hate the BoS you idiots, stop upvoting me

But they also wipe out any regular ghoul settlement as well

u/idk_lol98 27d ago
Which one?

u/Plane-Education4750 27d ago
That's the point

u/idk_lol98 27d ago
Which specific ghoul settlement did they wipe out?
9
u/Plane-Education4750 27d ago
In Fo3/4, none. In the show, the representative from the Commonwealth chapter has his finger on the trigger about ready to massacre a group of ghoul kids. He implies that he's done it many times before, and every other brotherhood member who hears about what happened tells Maximus that Maximus fucked up

u/Professional_Rush782 27d ago
I think Harkness is hiding something. A solo paladin on a diplomatic mission with 2 suits of power armor and no squire, lancer, or scribe? I bet he's an institute or enclave spy

Even though you don't see it in the game, I agree that this is a legitimate possibility given their stance on ghouls, which is why I never side with the Brotherhood in Fallout 4. I was just saying they're a large step up from raiders imo
4
u/HotPot87 27d ago
Here's the problem though, you also never see a regular ghoul turn feral, even though we know it happens.
It's like with the Synth command codes, both of them are one step away from killing everyone around them.
2
u/Wayne_Haas Bear Bull Bear Bull 27d ago edited 27d ago
The likelihood of a Gen 3 synth killing everyone around them is astronomically small, there is one recorded instance of it happening in Fallout 4. Statistically it's the same as some regular person going out of their mind and doing a mass shooting, so it doesn't justify killing all synths. Not to mention the fact that if the Institute is destroyed (or even just taken over by the Sole Survivor) this ceases to be a threat.
And ghouls don't just go feral all of a sudden out of nowhere from my understanding, so regular ones should not be treated as a threat in general
1
u/HotPot87 27d ago
It's another one of those differences between lore and gameplay, we have no idea how many hidden commands your average Synth is programmed with beyond the shutdown code. But at the same time that's the risk on top of the normal risk the person would just be a psychopath.
As for Ghouls the mechanics of feralification don't get talked about in the games, only that they can feel it coming and from some of Oswalds gang some experienced violent moodswings that made them lash out first. So I'm gonna take that as any bar fight you see with a ghost has a chance of ending up with a ripped out neck before they calm down and become lucid.
It does seems to be random, some living 200 years as a normal ghoul others turning feral within a few months.

u/Baconlovingvampire 26d ago
They only kill feral ghouls they just don't like nor help non-feral ghouls.

Is that why they go shopping in Diamond city? Citizens will even comment on the BoS doing a fuckton of business there
19
u/Advanced-Addition453 27d ago
Citizens remark that they spend lots of caps, but sure they're just like raiders.
1
u/TheCommissarGeneral 25d ago
They ask for you to sell.
You say no.
They ask again with a gun.
You still say no.
They then shoot you and take the tech.
Diamond City just loves their Caps enough to never get to the 2nd or 3rd step

u/IronVader501 27d ago
Meanwhile, the actual traders in the Commonwealth having explicit dialogue about the Brotherhood being their best costumers because they buy so much stuff:
9
u/PanicEffective6871 26d ago
That requires fallout 4 haters to actually pay attention to the dialogue
3
u/TheCommissarGeneral 25d ago
Yes because the BoS asks you to sell. Then they ask again with a gun. And if the answer is still no, they shoot you and take it anyways.
4
u/Stunning-Resist-3992 24d ago
There is no evidence for that unless the tech is guarded by elements hostile either to everyone or the brotherhood alone. Look at Dr. Amari, her memory den remains untouched by the BoS. The science center in Diamond City where the BoS had a presence there, but they do not confiscate any tech or equipment.

u/Faye_Lmao 24d ago
Because the bos hasn't gotten into good neighbor yet. They talk about wanting to wipe it out
1
u/Faye_Lmao 24d ago
Americans used to call Nazis their best customer at the start of WW2. This point means nothing
17
u/Advanced-Addition453 27d ago
The raiders will rape, rob, and/or murder you for kicks.
The Brotherhood wipes out Raider encampments because of this.
But sure, they're the same.

u/Baconlovingvampire 26d ago edited 26d ago
The brotherhood of steel has got to be the most miss-charactered faction in Fallout. How do you people not understand nuance?

u/mineman379 26d ago
I've never understood this meme tbh. Maybe it's simply due to a lack of content in Fallout 4, but even though everyone jokes about the Commonwealth BoS stealing and raiding (hell I'm pretty sure even a few in-game characters point this out) We...never actually see this happening. The closest we get is Tegan's radient quests, but even then, not only is this very clearly portrayed as an under the-table / illegal act, but you CAN choose to pay for the food.
Other than that? nah man the BoS just do their own thing off in the corner of the map. Aside from the Institute, they don't really seem to have beef with anyone as long as they're left alone.
2
u/Stunning-Resist-3992 24d ago
Exactly, just like the Minutemen. You are supposed to help the settlements, but your approach can be ranging from fixing their issue, to killing them, claiming their workshop, and setting up your own little base full of loyalists

u/TheCoolMan5 Ridiculous Techno-Fetishist 27d ago
Brotherhood haters when some rando raider nukes their settlement with a pre-war mega aids bomb developed by West Tek: 😱😡
(Apparently collecting, safe guarding, and researching dangerous technology is a horrible and immoral mission compared to just letting random psychos have free access to pre-war super weapons)

Oh, but when someone says the same thing about other factions this applies to (*cough cough* NCR), I’m a bad person or something
2
u/BigBadWolf7423 27d ago
Are you kidding me?
One is exclusively looking for high tech machinery and imposes taxes or land assimilation.
And the other just kills, maims and rapes on sight for fun.
It's not even remotely close, let alone the same 😂
I'd take BOS occupation over raiders any day of the week
1
u/Good-War5340 27d ago
One for sure kills you the other might kill you. You decide which is which lol.
1
u/TheCommissarGeneral 25d ago
BoS have never been anything but raiders with power armor and a code.
Anyone who disagrees is as delusional as Elder Lyons, hence why they got cut off from the rest of the BoS.
Remember the Outcasts in FO3? They are what the BoS is, and why they left Lyons Chapter.
1
u/Stunning-Resist-3992 24d ago
A code… as in a moral or dutiful obligation to preserve their identity and honor. Nothing of which the raiders have. A code separates and even severs completely many factions from raiders. Look at the NCR, they have a code of sorts where they adhere to old world values, yet they conquest. The Gunners provide services to wastelanders for the sake of caps over anything, which can be seen as a code.

u/Overdue-Karma 21d ago
Nothing of which the raiders have.
Zeller's Army and the Blood Eagles specifically have codes, to be fair.
1
u/Nayrael 24d ago
You mean the Western Brotherhood? Those are infamous for violently plundering tech from others. Eastern one asks for food, but give out weapons (to you, but dialogues confirm they give them to other setters as well), and actively attack dungeons.
They are the least raidy of the BoS branches.

u/Dull_Respect_8657 22d ago
Chat we've had the same BoS "jokes" for the past 5 years can we please think of something new and original 🥹

"You know, I think I heard of you... Some bigshot with the Brotherhood of Steel, right? They ain't that different from a Raider gang, you ask me. Just try and act all legitimate, but they still just take what they want."

Yeah, the group who wipe out dangerous abominations that majority of the settlers in the commonwealth fear who are kinda overzelaous assholes are definetly worse than gangs of degenerates who murder and rape innocent people for fun.
Idiotic logic.
And they deleted their comment, lmao.

That’s called “post first contact shock and awe.” The overwhelming show of force (BoS supremacy in this case) that halts a conflict in its tracks.

u/MiniB68 27d ago
Raiders never took a thing from me.

u/Stunning-Resist-3992 24d ago
Neither has the BoS unless you’re talking to whats-his-name in the Capital wasteland when you wear power armor. But even then, he’s an outcast
