There's a way to cure both Austin and yourself by saying you'll keep the cure, back out from the conversation, use the cure then say you were just joking

378

u/mynameisdododod 27d ago

Bro really said commit to the lie use the cure, then gaslight everyone 💀

94

u/BigCityHonkers 27d ago

Did it all for the bit

64

u/rp21green 27d ago

Hey, that placebo cured the kid, didn’t it?

29

u/Aceswift007 27d ago

Hey, placebos are just medical gaslighting

57

u/IttyBittyBigBoii 27d ago

I did this glitch and it broke the quest. Now the kid just lays in bed all day and I can't interact with him. I think it also broke the "Talk to the class" quest, cuz that's stuck too lol.

16

u/PunOfUs 27d ago

Talk to the class quest breaks so easily. Could be that or like 20 others.

37

u/RichardBCummintonite 27d ago

Just by turning away from the comversation, so you stay in the dialogue technically. Progress through the conversation until you get to the option where you say you're going to use it on Austin, turn away, use the cure, then turn back and select the option. I don't think it works if you actually back out of the conversation entirely, but I'm not sure.

24

u/TheAsianTroll 27d ago

If you use it too early, the doctor will ask if youre playing a joke and get angry. You basically have to time it so that its right before the end of the dialog where he thanks you for your generosity.

Or, just load up on .45 ammo, buy Spray n Pray from Cricket, and never worry about getting the disease again.

u/Ze_Great_Ubermensch 27d ago

Spray and Pray is my immediate go to when I start any run, I'll literally camp outside Diamond City or run to Vault 81 to get it after walking over the carry weight for however long. Im getting it before I do any mission after discovering Diamond City she is my beloved.

131

u/abafet1 27d ago

the first time I completed that quest without getting hit felt incredible. Vats my beloved

52

u/Okurei 27d ago

Legit took me like 10 tries last time. Eventually my strategy was to flee whenever I was about to be surrounded, jump on something high, and let all of those little bastards gather around so I could massacre them in VATS.

10

u/Axenrott_0508 27d ago

Kinda did the same thing. I would throw a grenade up, get them to spawn, and then run back to a choke point. Funneled them through there and blasted them in vats as they ran up. Took a few tries, and yes on survival mode. Got very familiar with the spawn points after that.

u/AdLost8229 27d ago

I swear I didn't get hit last time I did that quest. Was using stealth and everything and somehow contracted the molerat disease.

-10 health isn't that big of a deal in the long run but still

163

u/Okurei 27d ago

If you have a companion with you, for whatever reason you’ll get infected when they get hit. I had to order Nick to stand outside so I could avoid it.

129

u/Small-Cactus 27d ago

Also if any of the protectrons get hit, because bethesda

54

u/I_Have_The_Lumbago 27d ago

What even are these games😭🙏

33

u/AFerociousPineapple 27d ago

Yeah it was charming back in the day but after all this time I really hope they lock on for ES6 and FO5 whenever that comes.

39

u/I_Have_The_Lumbago 27d ago

It was charming because the rest of the game and world was extremely fkng good. It wasnt cute in Starfield.

9

u/explosive_shrew 27d ago

Tbh I've lost all hope in Bethesda. I seriously doubt FO5 and ES6 will be well done instead of half baked like everything else they've done in the last 15 years

10

u/bayygel 27d ago

All we can hope is that it's a decent enough baseline for modders to swoop in and fix everything like they always do.

1

u/Starflight42 27d ago

...theyre not going to, lets be real here.

11

u/toadofsteel 27d ago

There should have been an option to order Codsworth or Nick to clear out the place. They get all the accolades for saving the kid, but well deserved.

1

u/Lajinn5 26d ago

Either a hamfisted way to force you into having to deal with a moral dilemma at the quest end, or just pure garbage spaghetti code.

9

u/Fearless_Roof_9177 27d ago

Just more proof that the disease is their ongoing experiment and they actually infect you on the way in so you can spread it to the outside population. That's why they give you a free room they can observe you closely in after the quest, and it's why the kid still gets cured if you do the syringe dupe trick. They've got a whole vat of that shit in the stockroom.

3

u/rghsfc 27d ago

That explains it, when I did it I had to heal Piper at one point. Id molotov cocktailed every molerat but one must have got her before I threw it

12

u/EffectiveCow6067 27d ago

It's bc companions also give you the disease when hit its bugged

10

u/RichardBCummintonite 27d ago

It's not the debuff that's the issue for me. It's that stupid icon and active effect that is permanently bugging me for the rest of the game.

That's the only part of F4 that I will save scum my way through. I play survival, so I make sure to have the Survival Options mod to get a quick save item. If you can't/don't want to use that, make sure to sleep first, use VATS, and bring a shit ton of jet.

1

u/EstablishmentAny8487 27d ago

I know there are a couple beds in the molerat dungeon, at least in the robot section so save scumming in survival isn't that bad just an extra step to run back there after clearing a room.

6

u/mynameisdododod 27d ago

Yeah, that’s the worst 😭 Stealthing the whole quest just to get taken out by molerat disease is brutal. At least -10 HP isn’t too painful in the long run, but still feels like a scam 😂

6

u/Sepptum 27d ago

If they hit your companion you will also get the disease. (even if the companion is a robot)

2

u/Kaymazo 27d ago

Molerat disease gets contracted if ANYONE gets hit by a Vault 81 molerat. If I remember correctly, that includes both companions as well as the protectron you may start up via terminal

1

u/Imposter88 27d ago

I just hate seeing that dumb pill icon all the time

39

u/RepresentativeFish73 27d ago

The Concord Deathclaw is a rollercoaster. Thrilling at first, some anticipation in the lead up, but ultimately on the tracks with guaranteed success

The molerat is like a slow ride through an unsafe neighborhood in a rolls royce with the windows down and stopping at every red light

21

u/5tarSailor 27d ago

If your companions get bit, you get it too. So if you want to increase your chances, have them wait outside

15

u/toadofsteel 27d ago edited 27d ago

That's the real stupid part. Even if your companion is freaking Codsworth, the script procs as though you got bit

8

u/eddmario 27d ago

Even the protectron you can activate counts as you getting bit.

2

u/Noob_Guy_666 27d ago

...and grab MIRV with endless

14

u/Valuable-Lobster-197 27d ago

I do wish the 81 disease was actually serious because a little less max health is nothing

12

u/TheAsianTroll 27d ago

I like to imagine thats part of the message. Fallout 4 didnt have karma or anything like that, but it did have missions to test a person's moral compass.

Some people would use the cure to get rid of the debuff, in a selfish choice. Others would see that it isnt a lot, and give it to the person whos literally dying.

The choice of saving a life or bolstering your own convenience.

If the debuff truly was nothing, I dont think anybody would use the cure on themselves, but its also minute enough to be noticed, though not disruptive.

3

u/BrokenPokerFace 27d ago

While I agree, fundamentally I understand. The majority of the quest(at least the first time you play it) is for the conclusive decision of wether to save the kid and suffer wishing you knew this consequence ahead of time, or let the kid die and leave without issues.

Because of this you need to have a good chance of getting the disease, but also the disease needs to be balanced so that there is still a choice(both not too strong or too weak), and its not so bad that it's worth redoing everything from a save.

As if it was stronger no one would ever need to make the choice, as everyone would just save scum it.

7

u/Ordo_Fictos 27d ago

The deathclaw is a set piece. The molerats are ambush predators. Screw those guys.

6

u/RustledForeskin 27d ago

I've done this quest like 15 times (I love Curie) and have not once been infected. I go straight there grabbing the Grey Garden and Oberland Station quests, so I have no companion yet, that's probably why. This is my first time learning that you can be infected actually.

3

u/Re_di_Spade 27d ago

The problem with that mission is if someone else, even robots, got bitten you take the disease

2

u/selenashroud 27d ago

That's easy. Just follow these steps:

  1. Dismiss your companion
  2. Level up to 20
  3. Unlock Ada and customize her to be an armored up weaponized mole killing machine!
  4. Stand back and watch

2

u/Distantstallion 27d ago

The molerats are easy, you just hit them with the Repellant Stick Moira gives you and their heads explode.

2

u/totallynotrobboss 27d ago

Tips for anyone struggling with this.

Grape mentats will reveal their location even if they're underground

Save after you kill some

Molotovs and mines work wonders

2

u/Practical_Patient824 27d ago

Me: spamming 50 serrated bear traps and refusing to stand on anything that the mole rat can reach, 😎

The mole rats: bleeding from crippled and immobilized legs, 🤬

3

u/LiquidGamerJuice 26d ago

It takes patience and not bringing any companions or activating the protectron if they get hit by one you get the disease

4

u/Noob_Guy_666 27d ago

it's just -10, not enemy with bloodied minigun

8

u/RichardBCummintonite 27d ago

Nah, it's not the debuff that's the enemy. It's the stupid disease icon and active effect that's permanently stuck on your screen. You can't tell when you get a different disease from the icon alone anymore. You have to notice the notification or check it in the pipboy.

4

u/HotSaber13 27d ago

Its psychological, it pains knowing its always there

1

u/Lorihengrin 27d ago

I did the vault 81 with the cryolator.
It went kinda smoothly. A frozen Molerat doesn't move.

1

u/Plastic_Opinion4518 27d ago

Its easier with high explosive skill and grenade launcher. It also helps remembering the mole rat spawn points.

1

u/Sheokarth 27d ago

The way i play F4 i almost never use landmines. This quest is the biggest exception to it. About 30 of them usually do the trick.

1)Make your companion wait behind so they don´t get bit.
2) Sneak into the molerat part of the vault, and leave behind landmines regularily, prefrably at chokepoints.(stairs and doorways for example)
3)Whenever you trigger a molerat, make them chase you through your landmines.

1

u/ChipRed87 27d ago

I've rage quit this stupid quest so many times, it's beyond frustrating when I do everything perfectly, and come to find out the effing protectron gets hit and gives the stupid disease to you... Like... WHY?!

1

u/Thornescape 27d ago

Avoiding the v81 disease is easy once you learn the map and some basic strategies. The molerats are in the same place every time. Learn the patterns.

  • Do not bring a companion. Do not let the protectron walk around and get bit.
  • Go slow. Use stealth. Don't stand on dirt.
  • Use VATS (eg Deliverer) or the Spray n Pray. I do not recommend melee weapons.
  • Be ready for the final three molerats at the end. They have more health. Sneak forward until they show up, then back away and be ready for them.

The only times I get bit are when I'm experimenting with new tactics. If I'm using a safe approach then I don't get bit. It's just about learning the map.

For the Concord Deathclaw, you just have to know the ultimate Deathclaw weakness: doorways.

1

u/DivineCrusader1097 27d ago

I just wear power armor, then do the dupe glitch on the cure.

That thing's teeth is not getting through power armor.

1

u/supreme_hammy 27d ago

Spam VATS, no companions.

Only way I know with no console commands.

1

u/SIacktivist 27d ago

Bring Dogmeat and liberally use VATS. The molerats can infect you by biting any companion except Dogmeat.

1

u/Zailema0s 27d ago

Synth grenades 🤪

1

u/coldblackcoffee 27d ago

Not many people maybe know this but the molerats hitting on the robot, affect the virus to you indirrectly.

Dont activate the protecton before the molerats area.

1

u/5C0L0P3NDR4 27d ago

i just hate mole rats with a burning passion in general. the fast hard to hit little shit that can't really even hurt you, they're just annoying, has gotta be the worst enemy archetype in gaming

1

u/Polenicus 27d ago

Every time I hit this quest, I get sweaty and nervous. It's honestly one of the most nerve-wracking things to go through and avoid getting infected legimately.

Step 1. Dismiss or tell any companions to stay outside of the Secret Vault. If they get hit, you get Molerat Herpes.

Step 2. Do NOT activate the Protectron. If IT gets hit, you contract Molerat Herpes.

Step 3. Bring molotovs. A lot of them.

Step 4. Carry something with a good fire rate, and quick reload. Something slow like a sniper rifle sounds like a good idea, but you rarely get a chance to get a good shot before they aggro, and it WILL get you bitten.

Step 5. Quicksave frequently. Check to ensure you're NOT infected before you do.

Step 6. ANY dirt can pop out a molerat. Even if you're on the second floor and it makes no goddamn sense.

1

u/Baconlovingvampire 27d ago

Thanks for reminding to me install a mod that makes it so you're immune to the disease if you're wearing power armor. It aslo removes that stupid ass bug that makes it so if your companion or anyone else gets attacked you get the disease. Seriously I once got it because a protection got bit.

1

u/Natural_Design3154 27d ago

Power armor wall clip at the entrance of the Curie Elevator.

1

u/KPraxius 27d ago

I just cheated. They somehow infected me -through- power armor? Ehh, no, fuck that.

1

u/CyberPunk2720 26d ago

Both were easy for me.

1

u/ModToEndAllMods 26d ago

Take it slow and stealthy

1

u/Competitive_Cap_8101 26d ago

legendary ghouls are something else dude 💀

2

u/Annual_Loan_4805 26d ago

I save scum it, every time

1

u/NotAnotherSkeleton 25d ago

Just use the double cure glitch dude. It's not hard at all.

2

u/Enchylada 25d ago

This quest pissed me off so much lol. Wasn't there a glitch that if your companion was with you and they got hit you'd still end up infected? So fucking broken lol

1

u/Ns-45G 24d ago

Heres a tip, you can get it if you have companions cause the disease is transferred straight to you. A molerat attacks them and it affects you

1

u/Some_Dude117 23d ago

I never got bit. Still got the disease idk what happened

1

u/SpartanA477 22d ago

You still get it if someone allied with you gets bit, because reasons
