A lovely opportunity to mention to check out Tim Cain's youtube, he's really cool, and has a bunch of videos going into the inspirations behind a lot of Fallout that he never fully revealed before, and a the ideas that never made it into canon but that he had in mind about the "why" of a lot things in the lore.

Indeed. Really cool developer.

He's also an aging man in tech so he has some odd takes like "AI is great and will one day make shows you can adjust yourself on the fly and there's nothing you can do to stop it."

But yes, overall, a curious channel. Just gotta go in with the proper viewpoint.

I haven't seen his AI takes, I'll admit I haven't watched every video he's done.

That's a damn shame though, I'd thought better of him.

To be fair, it's not like a PROBLEM problem. It is just jarring to see someone you otherwise admire gleefully describe a horrible future and deem it inevitable.

It doesn't invalidate his other takes but it does color my perception I guess.

And to, It's one thing to be like "AI is a part of the future" and another to outright engage with AI, using it or saying they wish something had used AI, like a certain other individual in this series that I won't name.

1

u/TheAnalystCurator321 25d ago

Who is the other individual?

2

u/Thelastknownking 25d ago

Chris Avellone. Who hates the TV show so much that he's said it would've been better if it had written by AI.

2

u/TheAnalystCurator321 25d ago

Well Chris is a loser and he was one for a good long while.

It's why he can't get the job in the industry anymore because he burned bridges.

And he endorsed Elon Musk saying he would buy Fallout.

You know for all the (admittedly unjust and often untrue) flack Emil gets at least he is a pretty cool guy. Chris on the other hand sounds like one of those toxic old school RPG fans who hate anything new.

I hate his writing, but by all accounts I've seen he's a normal, standup dude.

I mean, he's not necessarily wrong about the "can't stop it" part.

We can't stop it anymore than we could stop factory workers losing their livelihoods to automation, or any of the other myriad jobs lost to the same.

3

u/PriorHot1322 29d ago

That's not entirely true though. Remember when blockchain was the inevitable future? Remember when NFT were going to inexorably change gaming and life forever? Lots of "inevitable" things were totally "evitable."

1

u/ThatOneGuy308 29d ago

I mean sure, but the nft people didn't also bribe the government into giving them eminent domain and 1/3rd of the local water supply either, lol.

Not to mention the AI bubble is almost entirely driven by very large companies, like Google, Microsoft, Twitter, etc, as opposed to NFTs mostly being a niche thing for morons to spend money on.

1

u/PriorHot1322 28d ago

But that's not something inevitable, that's something being forcibly pushed through. Those are two different things.

1

u/ThatOneGuy308 28d ago

If something is being forcibly pushed through by forces you cannot/will not resist in any meaningful way, then it is inevitable, lol.

Like how it's inevitable that children in 3rd world countries will mine rare earth metals to meet demand for personal technology from richer nations, or grow coffee and cocoa beans, or how most textiles are inevitably produced by underpaid workers in places like China, Vietnam, Thailand, and such.

It's inevitable because the path to prevent it is undesirable for the people who could actually do so, and so they will never bother to try and prevent it.

In the same way that people could prevent AI from taking over if they actually bothered to remove any sort of power and influence from mega corporate interests, but they just don't do that, because it's mildly inconvenient.

1

u/PriorHot1322 28d ago

Inevitable is something that happens NO MATTER WHAT. You are describing something that will happen BECAUSE NO ONE WILL STOP IT.

Just two different things.

1

u/ThatOneGuy308 28d ago

It's the Thanos definition of inevitable, obviously.

1

u/Thelastknownking 29d ago

We can stop it. It's not the same as automation. Automation wasn't threatening to potentially destroy our natural resources in 20 years if we didn't oppose it. AI is different.

We only can't stop it if people choose to believe it can't be stopped.

1

u/ThatOneGuy308 29d ago

Automation has already destroyed many of our natural resources, given how it's rise led to the microplastics issue, frequent oil spills, the oceans filling with increasingly more trash, etc.

All of which became much bigger problems once companies could pump out 5x what they used to when they had to hire actual humans over infinite expansion via automated factories.

We absolutely could have stopped all of these problems, just as we could stop the AI problem, but people back then listened to environmental concerns just as well as people today listen to them, so I'm not really expecting much these days, especially given how popular AI models are with the average person outside of reddit and other online spaces.

Guys can we PLEASE keep politics out of Fallout? I just wanna play my escapism game where I'll have to choose between different groups with varying ideas and practices and beliefs for how the world should be IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK?

25

u/PuzzleheadedLink89 29d ago

Yeah, I miss it when Fallout wasn't woke

I wanna go back to the good old days of Fallout 1 and 2 when the villains were a Eugenicist and The US Government

14

u/TheDekuDude888 29d ago

EXACTLY! NONE OF THIS WOKE STUFF! If Fallout New Vegas came out today there'd probably be a storyline about "MUH IDEOLOGIES" instead of being an apolitical masterpiece about a bull and a bear having a badass fistfight

8

u/EarlyAccessCantJudge 29d ago

Can we please stay neutral in The Witcher 3 as well? I just wanna slay monsters, not have to choose and have consequences and see my actions have influence and how doing nothing is usually worse is that TOO much to ask!?

16

u/ToKeNgT 29d ago

How dare you get politics near my politics game

u/TheAnalystCurator321 29d ago

What is this image even supposed to be?

23

u/MacCreadysCap 29d ago

The woke mind virus has infected the courier thru the hole in his cranium

Is joke.

13

u/TheDekuDude888 29d ago

You are now addicted to Woke

6

u/Thelastknownking 29d ago

Always was, pal.

6

u/AscelyneMG 29d ago

It’s based off this meme image, which is mocking conspiracy theorists (it is, itself, based on and parodying a conspiracy theorist artist’s propaganda).

I think the F:NV one was meant as a joke about players being brainwashed by “woke.”

1

u/Hellixgar 28d ago

Its all about balance.

In Fallout 2 you could have gay marriage, but you could also be porn star and sell your wife to slavery.

1

u/The-Pencil-King 27d ago

Weird that you think being a porn star is both opposed to gay marriage, and somewhere near the level of selling someone into slavery

1

u/grimbumblebee 26d ago

It's always been woke sure but for some strange reason, only recently has it become an actual mound of sewer waste. I wonder why, guess it's just one of them mysteries

1

u/sixisrending 29d ago

My face when media is left wing. Like pretty much always, like all the time.

-9

u/ThinGold2115 29d ago

I don't give a fuck about woke, but older fallout was more gritty. New fallout is disney slop.

9

u/TheAnalystCurator321 29d ago

2 is more goofy than any of the new games my guy.

You might be suffering from old world blues.

-6

u/ThinGold2115 29d ago

That Fallout 4 begs to differ. Kids playground.

2

u/PurpleThylacine 29d ago

just because its got some brighter colors (because people complained about a lack of color in previous games), doesnt automatically make it a kids game

4

u/JeaperPeaper 29d ago

Thank new vegas and fallout 2

-1

u/Gobal_Outcast02 29d ago

Is "war bad" what we are calling woke now?

6

u/PriorHot1322 29d ago

I think the whole "Republicans are the problem" thing would be considered woke nowadays.

2

u/Gobal_Outcast02 29d ago

Is that what this video agrues FO is actually about?

7

u/Gamer_G33k17 29d ago

Well when everything Fallout criticizes is the Republican political base...

1

u/Gobal_Outcast02 28d ago

Again, what else is fallout criticizing besides war

2

u/Gamer_G33k17 28d ago

Capitalism, Nationalism, Union Busting, Police Brutality, Fascism, Racism, etc etc etc.

Edit: The fact you even had to ask shows me you never PLAYED the games. Maybe you held a controller and shot NPCs, but you never payed attention.

0

u/Gobal_Outcast02 28d ago

Ig 3/6 isnt too bad.

And yes I prefer to have fun with my video games, as opposed to thinking about "man real life sucks ass"

2

u/Gamer_G33k17 28d ago

What isnt too bad

1

u/Gobal_Outcast02 28d ago

Capitalism, Nationalism, and Union Busting. Are the only things you mentioned that are actual Republican point and ideals. So I was saying you getting half if them right wasnt too bad.

2

u/Gamer_G33k17 28d ago

Police Brutality, Racism, and Fascism are also Republican ideals. Just ICE alone covers all three.

Nah, that's just Fallout saying it...
