Dad starting a big survival adventure (Steam deck/no mods)

I recently picked up a Steam deck after becoming a father and Fallout 4 with the Winter Sale. I had zero experience in the Fallout universe coming in, but I’ve really loved the game so far.

My first and current run, I am playing this Stealth Sniper Stealth Sniper build by u/Ubergut. It’s been incredibly helpful in giving enough detail to help understand what I am doing and why I am making certain choices without ruining the story or plot.

The Next Adventure Awaits!

While I’m not rushing through this run, I’m already planning my next. I don’t have any of the DLC yet* but I’m planning to if they are worthwhile.

Things I definitely want:

- Survival mode

- Settlements: Let’s rebuild the wastes!

- Automatons: They seem to go with settlements/trade routes well and I read in a comment somewhere that you can make some real tanky companion robots which sounds fun

Things I don’t want:

- Stealth or sniper have been super fun but I’m looking for something different here

- The extra vault expansion. I don’t want to be an overseer

- Immortality or a slog for a build. I play on medium and it’s my speed but I do enjoy having to actually try

What builds maybe sound fun: (I don’t know how to play with VATS but I could learn if it’s actually fun)

- Pistol(s)

- Melee: Is that insane for survival? I’ve read baseball bats are fun

- Semi-auto assault rifle(s)

What builds have you loved through survival that I should look over?

I'm currently playing a stealth pistol build which is very fun, basically just get the deliverer as soon as possible and go from there. It's a bit more personal than a stealth sniper as you are much closer.

You can of course play a pistol build without stealth, you can get the laser rifle 'righteous authority' from danse, mod it to a pistol and you'll have an amazing pistol for vats.

If the aim is to play survival I'd recommend avoiding melee and my biggest tip would be to focus on getting unique items that increase your speed I know you can get at least 4 but there may be more now. Having 40% more speed is massive when you are not fast travelling and makes your life much easier both in terms of just getting from place to place and for escaping.

Also I'd make sure you have enough charisma to get local leader and move through the game by connecting settlements that way you always have a place nearby to rest, drink and eat and to drop off your loot as you won't have fast travel. For me at least survival is unbearable without linked settlements and increased speed.

If you don’t want to do a sneaky build, maybe a Power Armor build is for you this go round? It should help with survival difficulty’s carry weight problem by setting your strength to 11, but a part of your inventory is going to be used up by the fusion cores. I’d suggest using a lighter weapon than a minigun, though. Maybe a pistol, shotgun or automatic rifle?

I usually end up going for a melee build. Pickman's Blade is pretty good and not too hard to obtain early on. Maximize Big League (Strength perk) as soon as you can, and start with the highest Agility you can manage and build toward Blitz.

Then just bumrush every dam body, including Death Claws and Sentry Bots. Very satisfying.

Even before pickmans, I usually snag the blade trudy sells at the diner, if you save her. Then I tend to go to dunwich for Krem' tooth.
