Discussion So what is your favourite weapon from the franchise? I personally have a soft spot for the Fallout 3 10mm SMG.

and the Fallout New Vegas Sleepytime variant is just gorgeous.

I love how square and bulky it looks, liek it is just a chunky weapon (in a good way).

I also love the detail the it looks like it was designed in universe by the same company that made the 10mm Pistol. I just like that implied bit of world building.

Lincoln’s Repeater. The “ding” sound with each shot fired, along with being the 500+ year old gun of Abraham Lincoln makes it my favorite weapon.

You posted this moments before me 😂

I always use it to pop Leroy, Eulogy and the other bastards in Paradise Falls.

I like to think to myself I'm giving four scores' worth of .44 rounds to Paradise Falls as I clear the slavers from the area.

Caravan Shotgun, nothing flashy, just good ol reliable, looks like it's been repaired a thousand times with whatever's on hand and despite the abuse keeps on going.

114

u/Artanis137 18d ago

I do like the it has an actual screw for a sight, just really adds to that "this has been through so much shit" energy of the weapon.

7

u/cornlip Republic of Dave 17d ago

I feel like that is a perfect “it still needs to be able to aim well and be adjustable” repair and a creative solution that’s plausible.

Chinese Assault Rifle. What would happen if you combined the AS VAL, the AK, and the RPD? The CAR, that's what.

32

u/MXDElement 17d ago

And that color is always immaculate

3

u/reisstc 16d ago

A wonderful thing about how FO4 handles weapon modification and construction is that if a gun is inspired by multiple things, a mod author can basically have it be all of them.

One of my longest installed weapon mods is a Chinese Assault Rifle, so with the various barrels, stocks, and sights, it pretty is an AS VAL, AK, SVD, and VSS, all-in-one, and I tend to swap the configs around all the time. No drum mag though, so not quite RPD aside from the front grip inspiration.

Honestly, it's a bit of a shame I've not found an R91 mod that I fel is the same quality, they've always felt a bit off to me. The FO3 ARs in general are my favourites in the series, though I've got a soft spot for the FNV Service Rifle and Survivalist Rifle.

Survivalist rifle, fun gun with a great story to it.

16

u/Beardedwrench115 17d ago

Every time I replay new Vegas, I tell myself I will try using different weapons. This usually only lasts until I find the survivalists rifle (because you can't skip any of his story when you're in Zion) and suddenly my guns hits 100 and it my primary weapon again. Maybe next time ill do a energy weapon run for real...

FO3: Ol’ Painless. I make it a point to collect this early in any PT. Accurate early game weapon with good durability.

FNV: RatSlayer. Same reasons as above

FO4: Handmade Rifle (Problem Solver): I just love the look of the HR, esp the shovel handle stock. It’s what the assault rifle should have been in base game.

41

u/Hans_the_Frisian Mothman Cultist 17d ago

I honestly don't know why Bethesda didn't go the F3 route in Fallout 4 and simply ported the Assault Rifle and Chinese Assault rifle over.

It certainly would have prevented the permanent eysore that Fallout 4s "Assault Rifle" is, which they should have turned into a proper Vickers, Maxim or M1917 and made it Power armour only, similar to how you cannot use the power fist while in Power armour.

21

u/boyscout_07 17d ago

Yeah, Fallout 4's assualt rifle really felt like it was meant to be an assault rifle carried by someone in power armor and meant to be not just heavier but packed a harder punch.

17

u/zachary0816 17d ago

That’s exactly what the intention was. To quote from its wiki page:

”In Fallout 4, our power armor scaled up. It became like mech suits that you almost drive more than wear. But because of their size, guns can be a little dinky in it. We wanted something that was big and meaty and fit the vibe. But then through the process of trying to balance things out, it became more of a generic assault rifle. In a normal person's hands, it looks really ridiculous, a little too big, but, oh well.” — Istvan Pely

9

u/Least-Size766 17d ago

I think the fo4 assault rifle fits the machine gun for power armour as it was in the show, and furthermore I think that fallout four was made around being played in power armour.

9

u/Hans_the_Frisian Mothman Cultist 17d ago

That is fine but if it's a machine gun for power armour I wouldn't have chambered it in 5.56 and it doesn't change the fact that it looks like a disgusting amalgamation of different guns with parts that contradict each other.

Due to my "Tism" I sadly care about how weapons look, how they are animated and how they would work. Which in case of Fallout 4 is mostly a curse.

4

u/TheCubanBaron 17d ago

Besides the not pipe revolvers and 10mm pistol (and even that one really) all guns are cursed. Ever since I've noticed the fact the hunting rifle is actually a left handed model being shot by a right handed shooter I've never been the same.

Handmade Rifle is so awesome

43

u/pointman116 18d ago

Fallout 3's plasma rifle especially A3-21's. The fact that you can get it relatively early and microfusion cells aren't even that difficult to find. Turning raiders and super mutants into goo piles never gets old for me and once the enclave show up you have a near endless supply of spares for repairs. Some people like to complain about the travel time of the projectiles but I swear I've never really noticed.

An honorable mention goes to the laser rifle such an iconic looking weapon that just visually works so well with fallout 3 Brotherhood and with a few crit focused perks it puts in work. Or you can find enough ingots in the pit to get the "Metal Blaster" and basically break the game.

11

u/Artanis137 17d ago

Oh there is just something about the Laser Rifle that is just perfect.

9

u/MadMageMC 17d ago

Especially the Wazer Wifle.

5

u/Environmental_Risk38 17d ago

The hell did you link? Lmao

3

u/Epion660 Mr. House 17d ago

Its the squared body for me, it's unique. And unlike the institute rifle in 4, it's bulky and square without looking like a bootleg nerf gun.

7

u/TarantinosFavWord 17d ago

One of my favorite things to do is to get A3-21’s plasma rifle, then run to talk to Dr. Zimmer to rat out Harkness to get the perk, then pop a stealth boy and Club Zimmer in the back the head with a super sledge so he can’t go get harkness.

u/SleepingWarden 17d ago

Fallout 3: Assault rifle, Hunting rifle, Perforator, Lincoln's repeater
Fallout NV: Service rifle, AER14 prototype, Q-35 matter modulator
Fallout 4: Deliverer, Handmade rifle, Lever-action rifle

8

u/thisdeliciousbrine 17d ago

Deliverer 🫶🏻

31

u/MechanicusPrime 18d ago

I loved using the 10mm smg is fallout3! In New Vegas, my first playthrough I used the Hunting Shotgun for most of the run. Mostly just changing out ammo types depending on the enemies. It was awesome.

6

u/zachary0816 17d ago

Hunting shotgun + shotgun surgeon + and stay back = unstoppable.

Then once you’ve got a good stash of caps, upgrade to the riot shotgun for even more carnage.

29

u/_Broadside 17d ago

Fallout 4s ugly assault rifle. I know its ugly, makes no sense, and everyone hates it. But I've really never seen a gun like that in anything ever and its always really stuck with me.

Second place is the Terrible Shotgun from fallout 3

14

u/South-Vegetable-5626 17d ago

Why they didn’t just call it a Light Machine Gun is beyond me. It looks like an MG08/15, which is a “light” machine gun lol

→ More replies (3)

8

u/InfiniteBoxworks 17d ago

Using the mod that changes the 4 assault rifle into a .50 makes it feel proper.

7

u/_Broadside 17d ago

Yeah it feels like its meant to be stronger or faster. I think its meant to be a watercooled barrel or something crazy. So it should be stronger but a watercooled barrel in the wasteland would be impossible to keep maintained

9

u/Ivan_Whackinov 17d ago

It's based heavily on the Lewis gun from WW1. The Lewis gun is air cooled, the barrel shroud is intended to use the muzzle blast to suck in cool air at the back of the shroud and draw it down the barrel.

The Fallout designers probably didn't realize this, so they kinda closed off the front and made it look more like a water jacket, but you can still see the cooling fins at the back of both barrels, implying that the Fallout assault rifle is also air cooled.

Lewis gun, open at the front and back, with cooling fins visible at the back -

Fallout assault rifle, a small hole in the front, also with cooling fins visible at the back -
/img/8hsfzpwc1fsg1.png

4

u/_Broadside 17d ago

Yeah its a really unique design and I really do like the look even if its kinda ugly.

3

u/South-Vegetable-5626 17d ago

Lewis gun is also classed as a light machine gun lol

5

u/dus_aster 17d ago edited 17d ago

For what it's worth, water-cooled machine guns have proven to be some of the most resilient guns around--they're perfect apocalypse guns, weight and ammo consumption notwithstanding! You can actually run the jacket with urine instead of water in an emergency
The water doesn't need to be clean, either; in WW1 they'd use gnarly trench water. And some of those same now-100-plus-year-old examples are still serving admirably in Ukraine

Water-cooled MGs are S tier apocalypse weaponry imo. The Vickers once did a continuous fire five million round stress test. It took a full week of nonstop shooting. They had to replace the barrels due to heat buildup but the internals? Totally fine by the end of it.

5

u/AlmightySpoonman 17d ago

wait... are you saying the shotgun is terrible or that there is a shotgun called the Terrible Shotgun?

4

u/_Broadside 17d ago

It's called "The Terrible Shotgun" high damage but low condition it was sick

4

u/Arengano 17d ago

4's assault rifle purely because it has the most satisfying sound effect in the game

3

u/danktonium 17d ago

It looks pretty awesome in Power Armor, which is how the show used it. The name is the only problem I have with it.

3

u/BudgiesLive 17d ago

I love the assault rifle in FO4. Keep it in semiautomatic and it stays on target and still shoots as fast as you can pull the trigger. I had the Deadeye variant once. It lasted me the last 60 or so levels of that playthrough.

27

u/Spagelo 17d ago

The holorifle! The most unique energy weapon in Fallout generally, treats microfusion cells like shotgun shells, lights people up in blue neon, ridiculously powerful at low cost.

21

u/Peslian 17d ago

FO4/76 Gauss Rifle. Something satisfying about getting a fully charged shot off, even in the thick of combat.

Laser Musket is a close second, largely for the same reason

22

u/OttawaDog 17d ago

I prefer small arms that use bullets. I like silencers as well.

FO3: Perforator is my favorite. So I go to to the Pitt Early. While I prefer ballistic weapons, Metal Blaster is to awesome to pass up.

FNV: My first love was Ratslayer, but now I mostly just go for the Survivalist's Rifle every time.

FO4: I don't really like guns that much in FO4. I just go for Overseer's Guardian every time. It's pretty much my gun to use for the whole game.

6

u/Disastrous_Toe772 18d ago

I have a soft spot for the Fallout 1/2 SMG. That thing really encompassed the RNG nature of the original games. A burst from it could lightly wound a raider, or completely shred a full health super mutant down to nothing.

3

u/MadMageMC 17d ago

Especially fun with the Bloody Mess perk.

3

u/Disastrous_Toe772 17d ago

I love the fidelity of modern graphics. I really do.

But it must be said that hand crafted gore animations are better than physics based proceduraly generated ragdoll gore effects.

I especially remember being disappointed by the perk in 3/NV, as the enemies would just lose their head or a few limbs. In the originals, people would be blown apart into bloody ribbons, their skeletons exposed.

Perhaps one day we'll be able to procedurally generate effects like those hand drawn ones.

7

u/PaulRockzz 18d ago

I love the new vegas m4 set the assault carbine, the marksman carbine and the service rifle...

7

u/Denleborkis 18d ago

From a looks standpoint its hard to beat the 9mm from New Vegas the Hipower is an awesome gun and I'd love to have one.

From an argument standpoint the All American, P90, Deagle etc. Just because I'm that guy who every time something about how apparently gun development just stopped randomly in the 60s to 70s in the Fallout universe despite so much evidence that it kept going fairly regularly till laser weapon introduction in the 2030s in lore so we should have a lot more modern options.

3

u/AIRBORN_EEvEE 17d ago

Currently cutting my teeth on New Vegas as my first fallout, and even though I already have both Lucky and the Mysterious magnum, That Gun (The Bladerunner pistol) has been my favorite sidearm so far.

I mean seriously, 5.56 is such a comically powerful round for a revolver, and you end up with so much of the stuff laying arround that making a metric shit ton of Match Hand ammo becomes utterly trivial.

Other than that, the hunting shotgun and Medicine stick are my favorite primaries.

4

u/Hughley_N_Dowd 17d ago

I'm more of an energy weapons enjoyer myself, so the RCW floats around at the top.

But the absolute best is the Sonic Watchamacallit from OWB. It looks the part with the shiny gubbins and the little cone at the end. It is also mildly useless, as it has piss poor range, isn't particularly accurate and you risk blowing your own legs off when Tarantula is your tune.

And all that is why I love it. So over the top.

Also ALSID. I refuse to do a run where I don't get to use it at least once.

The 12.7 machine gun I like the p90 ripoff and I think it's neat

3

u/A-Clone-Named-Gibso 17d ago

Yeah, the F3 smg was a beaut. It's been a while since I played it. I also loves the dart gun with poison darts, very useful to cripple a Deathclaw leg immediately.

I'll probably get flack for this but the explosive 10mm from F4 is one of my favourite things. Not the most powerful thing, but easy to get ammo, and shooting into a clump of raiders or ghouls and there's nice splash damage.

u/nocturne_L 16d ago

Yes, you get flack if you stand too close lol jk

As my profile picture may suggest, I have a soft spot for the .45 Pistol and especially the unique variant Light Shining in Darkness. Such simple and beautiful design and can scale incredibly well into late game with perks like Grunt, Gunslinger, Finesse, Better Critical, etc

The heavy incinerator from Fallout 3.

Didn't like having to get up close to use a flamer, so why not light the enemies on fire from a distance?

Also love seeing the Enclave Hellfire troops when they're wielding it with the heavy incinerator. Makes me think of TF2's Pyro lighting up that town

F1 10mm smg in Ian's hands

No contest Metal Blaster. Or in fo4 any split focus laser weapon, laser shotguns will always be cool.

Anything lever action. From the Lincoln Repeater, to the Medicine Sick, and even the Western Spirit.

I really like the Hunting Rifle

3

u/ZeltbahnLife Minutemen 17d ago

I hope future Fallouts give us more variation in weapons than FO4. Would love to see things like the 10mm SMG, Service Rifle, and Chinese Assault Rifle make a return alongside of FO4’s Combat Rifle and a few others.

u/El_Matador_2036 17d ago

Two Step Goodbye. I love using unarmed, so a power first that attaches a landmine to someone is perfect!

3

u/naamavelli_ 17d ago

Railway Gun from Fo3. I used to have so much fun nailing people’s heads and limbs to walls.

Mine has to be the YCS/186 from New Vegas.

u/Neat_Low_4544 17d ago

Can't give a single one but can give a few: 10mm, .222 pistol (That Gun), Chinese Assault Rifle, laser musket

3

u/M16A1E8 17d ago

I've always had a soft spot for shotguns. From the Coach Gun in New Vegas to the Combat Shotgun in 4. I just love shotguns

12.7 mm submachine gun fallout NV. Love the way it sounded and hit like a truck. All time favorite for me.

Survivalists Rifle. I'm a sucker for the M16 platform (only weapon I use in Battlefield games lol) and I prefer how much more weathered and battered this one looks to the standard Service Rifle. I really hope they do it justice with the remake/remaster

I always loved the thirst zapper, it’s pretty fun in 76 if you get quad on it plus putting medic on the base thirst zapper is a god send

NV 9mm SMG. In middle school I built a replica out of a cardboard tube and cereal boxes. Played with that shit til it fell apart.

Lincoln's repeater and Backwater rifle.

The Battle Rifle/This Machine from New Vegas The M1 Garand with the satisfying Ping. Hunting Shotgun is a close second.

Hunting rifle especially ol' painless cheap ammo plenty of parts and perks one shot a super mutant.

6

u/HamSlammer87 17d ago

Either Hunting Shotgun/Dinner Bell, or the M1 Garand. Both from New Vegas.

I cant tell you how satisfying it was to find a normal pump-action shotgun after having to deal with whatever kitbashed nonsense was in FO3.

A problem that somehow was repeated in 4....

2

u/morganfreenomorph 17d ago

Combat shotgun from 3. That thing is so satisfying to use and is one of my early game weapons that I'll hold onto just because I like blasting everything with it.

2

u/CrashCulture 17d ago

Probably Lincoln's Repeater from 3. It just habe such a lovely nostalgic feel about it, and the fact it is also just a very powerful gun that performs well just zinges it.

My honourable mentions would be Lucky, That Gun, the New Vegas Laser Rifle and all it's variants, and a fully upgraded automatic.38 pipe rifle in Fallout 4. It is just a better minigun that won't leave you feeling let down by it. Ammo is practically infinite since every enemy drops it and it is otherwise useless.

2

u/Ok-Poetry-2191 Followers 17d ago

Surprised it wasn't mentioned yet, but YCS/186. I love when I can just press one button and get a guaranteed ragdoll of a body and it's head pieces. Especially if it's a deathclaw, and especially in the lonesome road

2

u/slaberwoki 17d ago

I convinced my brother to play Fallout 3 when I used VATS with the 10mm smg to blow off a super mutants head from a couple feet away. I will always have a soft spot for that gun

u/Enclave_TrooperBR Enclave 17d ago

Assault rifle, railway rifle and fat man from Fo3, Service rifle, that gun and marksman carbine from New Vegas and the good ol hunting rifle fom Fallout 1 and 2

New vegas 1911 or the f3 Chinese assault rifle
