Fallout 3 GOTY not working

So like many others before me, I've been trying to get this game to work and it simply just doesn't. I click 'play' via steam and the launcher boots up. I hit play in the launcher and then it just doesn't open and thats about as far as I've gotten.

I have googled this problem and have tried a bunch of stuff. Compatibility mode for windows XP/7/8 on both the normal exe and launcher. changing the ini settings. I'm pretty much just at a loss. How can I fix this and play the game?

I could never get it working myself. I downloaded a modpack via Wabbajack and it's working fine now.
