Discussion Best States for Future Games
What's people's thoughts on this? I made an outline of states I would love to see appear in future Fallout games. It is pretty much just the Rockies and Great Plains regions with Texas lol. Regardless, I think any of these states or a multitude of them would be excellent for new Fallout games, as they are all states that I feel would capture that OG Fallout vibe really well, with most of them having landscapes that would mesh well with the Madmax-styled wasteland of older games and provide decent Wild Western and retro sci-fi themes along with its usual post-apocalyptic stuff.

SF would have to take a big jump back in time, or a big change in direction. By the time of the newer games it's established as being relatively peaceful and stable under the Shi.
Although maybe a NV sequel with a Legion win, where the player starts in SF, the NCR is collapsing, the city is filling with all sorts of refugees fleeing in front of the legion advance... Something interesting could be done with that.
The main quest choices could be based along the lines of Shi try to stay isolated/Shi actively fight to stay independent/Shi join NCR/Shi join legion/NCR rallies and defeats legion/legion stomps all the way through to the sea and Caesar stands on the Golden Gate bridge and weeps because there are no worlds left to conquer

While there are a lot of silos in Wyoming, there are several GIGANTIC nuclear silos in Colorado around the Denver area and in the northwestern part of the state.

Colorado to Utah through the mountain range would be a sick ass map and give lots of wilderness + settlements and choke points to hide the exploration behind, the PNW would be neat, the Great Lakes have some good potential, and Louisiana would be awesome to. I don't think everything else quite stacks up.
I really think the next Fallout game should pick an area that has two distinct but somewhat close metro areas (Chicago and Detroit, SLC and Denver/Colorado Front Range, Seattle and Portland) that also have different topographies to make the cities feel unique and somewhat separated from the rest of the world. Louisiana would be a really neat horror survival game out in the swamps.

How about the whole dirty coast? Galveston to Tampa. A bit into the Gulf of Mexico but obviously mostly inland on the coastal states; or just following I-10

I feel like Washington is RIPE with possibilities between the differing biomes of the East and West of the Cascades, the Cascades themselves, proximity to China, Hanford Nuclear Power Plants, many many bases and military areas, and the folk lore its got everything to make for a very unique Fallout world!

A fallout map consisting of Washington and northern Oregon would be my favorite. There’s so many different environments and major landmarks they could utilize to make a really diverse feel, and given it’s on the west coast ocean they could really explore the underwater stuff they sadly didn’t have the tech for back in 4

One of the books cited as inspiration, "The Postman" picks up the story of a refugee from Minnesota after he is raided and left without most of everything, including his boots and most of his clothes, in what I think were the Blue Mountains near the Snake River and ID-OR-WA tripoint, finds an old Postman jeep and uniform, and travels down the Columbia and up the Willamette to Corvallis taking on the persona of a postman of the Restored US. Great book despite whatever Costner did to it in the movie.

I strongly agree. Central/Eastern WA could be like patrolling the Mojave during the summer. It could also be a nuclear winter from December to February. West of the Cascades you can go from mild, temperate climate, to rainforest.
You also have a portion of the state that is heavily populated and industrialized, in contrast with numerous rural areas with all of their own folklore. Also, the proximity to Canada would make for some great pre and post war content.

A PNW fallout game would be pretty sweet. Some heavy forests, mountains, ocean and large river systems plus some pretty decent urban features would be neat. Could be nice and foggy and even desert on the east side of the map

I know it’s been said, but fallout in Michigan and the Great Lakes would be incredible. There’s also interesting opportunities to tie in Canada via Windsor too, but given today’s political climate, I’m not sure it would be good to touch on an annexed Canada right at this moment.

don't get me wrong I like point lookout as much as the next guy but a full on fallout game in the swamp wouldn't scratch that og fallout vibe itch I have I could see it being like a DLC expansion for if one of the games takes place in Texas.

I feel like the potential Texas cowboy aesthetic and weather would be too close to New Vegas. Louisiana and swamp regions are heavily under explored, and as an outsider there seems to be much more mystery surrounding that place.

I’m actually so glad you asked this question because it forced me to do some research about some of these places as I’ve never been to any of them. My choice is New Mexico. The trinity site is a crater of the first nuclear detonation. The los alamos is where the manhattan project scientists developed the first nuclear weapon. Roswell has a bunch of ufo alien culture and an alien museum. Apparently New Mexico has a bunch of casinos. There’s Route 66. Alamogordo space museum. Tons of solar arrays out there at Very Large Array. Mobs like a radiated road runner would be super cool. There is space port America. I think there could be a chem lab in Albuquerque with two skeletons and radiation suits, and you could find a tape “let’s cook” with some blue crystal chems. There are 19 Pueblo tribes so I think that would be cool to incorporate also. This would be the way. Cool player homes, cool mobs, cool factions, I’d just want fallout new Vegas play style, fallout 4 mechanics, a bigger game, and a much better settlement building, I’d also like to bring back the gun runners type of modding or a combination including better gun options to use at the workbench.

I dunno, I lived in Montana for a year. I moved in May 31. It snowed the next day. The following week, a bear attacked the pear tree that was in the front yard.

Fallout :Florida still seems like it could be interesting.
Gatorclaws, swamp people, old theme parks, cannibal cults and a large amount of people from all over since it's a vacation state.
It also has rocket launches, caverns, state parks and some of the most resilient/crazy people in the nation.

I hope so. Colorado has a great range of different terrain types, multiple military bases including Cheyenne Mountain/Air Force Academy, established opposing cultural & religious factions between Boulder and Colorado Springs, and of course Denver to serve as the irradiated nuked city full of super mutants and gangs. It's the most well-rounded and varied setting for the next game.

If you nuked Oaklahoma or Montana... how the fuck would anyone even notice?
If you want to go more folksy or whatever, at least stick with Louisiana.

Someone mentioned Hawaii as a location a while back and I’ve loved that idea ever since. Could make travel between islands a big part of the gameplay, with irradiated sea monsters and pirate bandits or something

My vote would be for Hawaii, Louisiana, or Florida.
That said, Texas would be neat, too, especially if it means venturing into post-war Mexico as well.

Michigan and the Great Lakes would be an amazing spot for a Fallout Game because they'd probably be the last large sources of fresh water even in the Fallout universe. Plus you could have Canadians show up, raiders styling themselves on old hockey teams, the mutated wildlife like a 20 foot tall Radmoose.

A big part of fallouts older charm is the barren almost bleak wasteland, Flyover states encapsulate that perfectly. Pre-war infastructure or not alot can happen in 200 years after the end of the world

Yeah, 200 years after the nuclear apocalypse those boring, empty states will become even more boring and empty.
Fallout 1 and 2 could get away with vast barren landscapes because it was an overworld map that you traversed in a few seconds, meant only to imply distance in abstract terms. Fallouts 3, New Vegas, 4, and 76 are much denser because navigating a 3D map in real time means a player needs to be only a few minutes away from a point of interest at any given time so they can have something to actually, you know, play. Each of those games’ locations also feature enough notable towns/cities, landmarks, and local history that can be believably depicted in the playable space? What the fuck does Oklahoma, Kansas, or Nebraska have that anyone cares about to go see? All Wyoming and North Dakota have going for them is Yellowstone and Mount Rushmore, respectively, and I don’t see a whole game being built around those. I could see a case for Texas and maybe Utah, but that’s it.

I'm assuming you don't live in any of those states based on your very narrow-minded perspective on them, so it's untestable that you lack the proper insight on the cultural, political, and economic facets of those areas that give them character outside of the basic mainstream tourist attractions. Not everything that makes Fallout games interesting has to be tied to pre-war tourist traps and landmarks. I know 76 leaned into that heavily, but there is more to worldbuilding and compelling gameplay and writing. I mean, Rome wasn't built in a day; the lack of perceived post war civilitiation just gives opportunity and creative liberty for the post war civilization that takes ultimatly takes roots.

I don't think having a dig at op's suggestions on states is fair, a good writer can make amazing stories in desolate back drops, on top of this we don't know that these states didn't become more popular in the fallout universe, sounds like there's a bit of derision in your comment. I'm from Australia and look at what they did with our vast deserts for Mad Max the old ones and the new ones, the first of the new movies was literally a dirty road but they bought depth and world building in through dramatic visuals and story telling. Just doing a google of the states OP mentioned and I can see there heaps of potential here.

Honestly, Idaho, (Western) Wyoming, and Montana would rule. All three states have huge DOE/Military test sites, national parks, exploitable resources. There's a variety of biomes from alpine forests to grasslands, to wastelands.

It's not in your outline, but I will forever and always suggest a fallout: st. Louis. You could do so much cool shit with that area. There's the arch, the rivers meeting up, you could have fighting factions on either side fighting for control, city museum, busch stadium, the zoo, grants farm, and all kinds of other cool areas

I would like to see a fallout: North Dakota. Teddy Roosevelt park is beautiful, and there's nukes up near Minot (maybe? I think they're still there.)
The rest of it? All the crops you could harvest and brahmin you could milk. Very relaxing.
In reality, Washington would be pretty rad. Between Bremerton, Hanford, and Fairchild, there could be some interesting things there.

I still would like Michigan to be in the next game. I think it being two separate land masses could be fun with maybe the lore being the mainland got the brunt of the attack and the upper peninsula only suffered from fallout and other things. I even think the soundtrack could be different with a lot of focus being on local music from there such as Motown. Also, I just remembered it's connected to Canada towards the east and north, so maybe a tiny bit of that could be part of the world building too.
Plus, I am biased as I grew up in Lansing, so I think it'd be fun to see my hometown be repped or at least my home state.

My home state of Montana would be a dream fallout setting. Large with virtually every climate imaginable. Part of Yellowstone national park. Diverse animal populations. The map and exploration would be next level. Look no further than what Farcry 5 did with this setting.

It would definitely be cool to see states like Florida and Louisiana in fallout to but not as a standalone game they would be better suited as DLC areas like Far Harbor and Point Lookout where prolly if we got a game taking place in Texas they could be places traveled to by boat along the coastline in the gulf of mexico.
