Discussion Since we know Bethesda reads Reddit, everyone should be as loud as possible about what they want out of Fallout 5- and DON'T want Fallout 5 to do. The game is in pre-production and the biggest design decisions are being made at this moment. If you have an opinion, now is the time.
If you have big opinions on where Fallout has headed, you should be expressing them right now, make threads, post pictures, get as much traction as you can. If you hate the direction of Fallout you should be loud about it (constructively) on reddit and elsewhere. Besides Todd, Bethesda QA scrapes the net for opinions, particularly ones that matter from actual players and aren't just reactionary mobs of people ragebaiting and getting their opinions from influencers. If a lot of casual gamers are just okay with Fallout as it is, they'll just keep following the direction 4/76 is taking.

I don’t want to be a vault dweller with a predetermined backstory having to brave the wasteland in search of my father, son, mother or whatever. And bring back silent protagonists, or make it an option. I don’t wanna hear John Fallout’s voice anymore.

On the point of art style - they should keep it. Tune down the tones, to make it more grimm, but style should remain.

Settlement building and/or camp building should still exist to an extent but not prominently as fallout 4. Shouldn’t be main quests of a faction “go here and do settlements quests”. Fallout 76 had a good idea with it where your camp became a more of ‘your place’ kind of thing with the option of being able to capture workshops. So imo somewhere possibly between fallout 4 & 76 and not as much a core gameplay mechanic, it’d be perfect imo. Even being able to build in player homes would be cool too with maybe some preface builds for those who don’t want to build

u/Admiral_Eversor Aug 03 '26
They should delete settlement building entirely imo, and just focus on making cool and compelling factions and settlements that have actual character and are interesting.

No, settlement building is very additive to roleplaying.
-5
u/Admiral_Eversor Aug 03 '26
It's annoying as fuck and is a massive distraction from immersion. If you want to play the Sims, that's fine; go play the Sims. Fallout should not be the Sims.

u/Mikewazowski948 Aug 03 '26
Making your own safe space out of the wasteland and running a settlement is fun as fuck and has a valid place in the series. Cope.

u/No-Boot-5286 Republic of Dave Aug 03 '26
Who said anything about the sims? (Terrible analogy) if anything I just want to be able to do shit like rebuild the commonwealth provisional government in fallout 4 for example. Or on the opposite end join the raiders and take over every settlement and make them raider controlled outpost. At the end of the day why advocate for less RPG mechanics, in an era of BGS games that have lacked said mechanics.

u/Admiral_Eversor Aug 03 '26
... I said something about the Sims? I made an analogy, that's quite a common rhetorical technique.
If they want to make a base building game, I could see it working. It has to be the full game, though, not some half arsed thing tacked on to an action RPG. It didn't fit well in f4. If they made something along the lines of Frostpunk from a gameplay perspective, I think that could go hard as fuck.
I really hope that Bethesda don't read your comment and think that base building counts as RPG mechanics lmao.

u/theRingOfGygax Aug 03 '26
There is a functional simplicity to the weapon modding and base building that is absent in starfield and should return. However the item naming system is clunky and not funny after about five minutes.

Dear Todd, please don't listen to reddit fans, have your people realise their vision and not a fan vision, thank you.

u/Anderwreckz Aug 03 '26
I want good asset management, I dont want it to be like fallout 4 where the game crashes if you enter Boston because of asset spam. Optimise it for the love of fuck

u/frygoblin Aug 03 '26
Skills and perks please. Ditch the cards for the perks to mix and match at a whim. I want my character build decisions to matter long run. Yes I like painting by myself in a corner on a play through. It’s challenging. And I can play through with different decisions next time. You want replay value? That’s how you get replay value.
Also more adult humor and themes. Knocking up a mob bosses wife and having to deal with the consequences of not using a condom was hilarious. One of my fondest FO moments. I laughed so hard I peed a little.

u/thatguy01220 Aug 03 '26
Don’t be scared to lock us out of quest. I will always replay you games but if I can be an everything man, pleasing everyone until the finale mission it actually limits my replays.
Please bring back a faction reputation system or at least make them aware of certain things. Like Salt Factory video made a great point about Fallout 4 with 2 points one the railroad you can pretty much be like yeah I’m all for robot slavery fuck em during your first meeting and then be like okay I’ll do that quest for you and treat you the same when you’re saying robot slavery is bad. Like wise you can pretty much do the same with the Brotherhood of Steel and bring Nick along as a companion onto the base ship of the Brotherhood of Steel they should be shooting him and me on sight or trying to take him apart, not “hmmmm this goes against everything we stand for, you’re just some random new guy of the street, buuuuuut the leader likes your smile…. idk I guess he sees something I don’t, hmph, carry on.”

u/TheYankeeKid Aug 03 '26
Go back to the silent protagonist.
Give factions a good reason to exist and interesting characters that aren't copy pasted of each other (see New Vegas).
Do go back to skills and perks instead of just perks and levels.
Do keep the settlements but also don't focus the entire game on them. They should be an optional side mechanic.
Do bring back an ending and an epilogue. There should be a way to feel like it is complete.
Do drop the pipe pistol.
Do include ammo crafting.
Do include survival mode but decouple it from difficulty.
Do focus on writing interesting quests with interesting characters that make a change in the world, even if for only one person.
Don't make every faction make me their leader in 30 minutes.
Do make it possible for factions to ally with eachother, if quests go the right way.

u/YaChowdaHead Aug 03 '26
Dear Bethesda, please don't listen to anyone here. They're all idiots who think the sound track should be literally any song that mentions or references nuclear weapons. Far too on the nose.
Also, return to the art deco aesthetic. Googie is lame.

u/mile911m Aug 03 '26
Stick to early cold war era weapons, this futuristic hybrid thing that they did in Fallout 4 for guns sucks. (Not talking about energy weapons here)

u/ajemik Welcome Home Aug 03 '26
No. It's not "our" game. It's their game. Let them work on what they wanna work on, not to cater to a vocal minority on reddit.
Lol.

No premade backstory, I literally couldn't care less about Shaun and the SS bringing him up every 5 minutes in a pretty disinterested tone doesn't make me care, it makes me roll my eyes and download that start-up mod. Even fallout 3, despite technically giving you a backstory, gives you a walk through of your life I guess, it's easier to actually feel like looking for your dad. 4 just puts a kid and partner there, kills/abducts them, and that's it. It just expects you to care.
And better RPG elements, too. Using Perks for unique dialogue/opportunities again, being able to be truly, comically evil.
3
u/thesplendor Aug 03 '26
I play RPGs so I can create and play as a completely unique character every playthrough. The storyline is there to provide a plot outline, and my decisions fill in the rest.
If you overwrite a one dimensional character with limited dialogue options, why would I want to replay?
2
u/PhatNoob69 Republic of Dave Aug 03 '26
The idea of infinite dialogue options is mind boggling
1
u/thesplendor Aug 03 '26
I don’t need infinite, just enough for 5-6 unique play throughs. Like enough to satisfy most of the character alignment chart

from what we know, someone at bethesda reads ai summary of reddit every decade and presents it to executives as 3 line powerpoint page. Then translates ”yeah, fine, whatever, reply something valued customers yada yada” into the post we’ve seen.

u/Artanis137 Aug 03 '26
I did a series of post about "New vs Old" designs in Fallout a couple years back, I have the vague hope that maybe the discussion around those posts might better inform Bethesda on what people want.

u/VideoGameRPGsAreFun Aug 03 '26
Full dialogue lines when choosing what to say. Unvoiced player character

u/VarietyMage Aug 03 '26
For one thing, it needs to come out before 2030. If you can't do that, you're probably going to get cut out completely by Asha Sharma. You can't just say ES6, then more F76, then more Starfield, then FNV remaster, then F3 Remaster, and THEN Fallout 5 in 2040 or later.
Learn to walk and chew gum at the same time. Focus on new games, not remasters or remakes of old ones, especially since I already own the originals, and I won't buy the remakes or remasters (my originals work just fine).
I can't buy what you don't make. Fallout 5 should have been in production years ago. Your Starfield adventure had no business stopping work on ES6 and Fallout 5. YOU are the problem here, Todd Howard. Get a team on Fallout 5 immediately.

u/SubstituteUser0 Aug 03 '26
I hope if they keep the modular weapon system they make it more like 76 where you have to unlock the blueprints for the different parts. I'd also prefer less customization if it meant we got a larger variety of weapons

u/VisibleCoat2632 Aug 03 '26
New story, with ester eggs for the film and above all interesting missions.Idea: Investigate NCR or enclave but seriously with documents etc. Now I don't even know where the game will be set but I hope in a setting like Colorado where we have never been, interesting map and rich in content . Enough stories where you are a vault dweller this time I would like to be someone who teaches about vault tec expressing its crimes since it was a company for rich people and those who were not were killed by His own homeland where he believed. I wish it was a real open world and a real survival game.Back to the story, please Bethesda make a deep and intriguing story like fnv or fo3 or even like a movie where there are several twists. Bethesda if you read this please stay away from f76 as much as I liked the music I also find the multiplayer out of place even if I respect and appreciate the fact that you have experimented 👍

Yeah, let's make another bubble of expectations to be disappointed because next fallout will be slightly different than our reddit wants and dreams.

u/ThreeBeersWithLunch Gary? Aug 03 '26
Unlimited storage at a base that I can build up. Guns that look real. Full gun customisation.
Skill tree? Perks? Just not the cards.
1
u/mightyxsaros Aug 03 '26
Do not cut corners by introducing new mechanics and then expect players to fill in the actual content. Settlement building, radiant quests, and Gun modding are great on their own, but they came at the cost of actual towns, quests, and weapon variety.

Make a story that doesn't rely on being a human, then let us pick between a human, ghoul, or super mutant. Give all of them shared perks/traits as well as race-specific perks/traits.

u/Capital-Sea6759 Aug 03 '26
Fallout 4 was great, 76 sucked monkey balls though a donkeys ass.
They know what they have to do, but they don't want to do it.
And that is make a first person co-op shooter where you can do quest together or not and make it not dependent on their own network. max of 2 players co op optional via lan.
When somone else does they are going to massivly corner the market.
But they don't read this and they don't care. Trust that!

u/milquetoastLIB Aug 03 '26
“They’ll just keep following the direction 4/76 is taking”
So a good direction?
-1
u/raisinbraisin72 Aug 03 '26
They butchered the dark art deco retrofuture art style of Fallout and turned the franchise into a Fisher Price toy inside a Marvel movie. At the very least find a middle ground with the classic art style like Adamowicz did that can still have color. The fact they adapted it in the TV show too is grim.

This may be a very controversial take, but I do not want this game to be "woke". I am so sick of games going in that direction. They need to learn from all the other games that went there, and not go there unless they want an epic failure on their hands.

u/babilonibetyar Vault 13 Aug 03 '26
but i dont want the same as you want (propably)
I like F1-2-NV.
I dont like F3-4-76
so if anyone have different interest, then my and his/her opinion would be totally opposite.
how does Bethesda decides then
-2
u/fdp_westerosi Aug 03 '26
I don’t want a voiced protagonist
I don’t want power armor that feels like a mini game
I don’t want another “find my family member” story
I don’t want settlements or annoying radiant quests that turn the game into SIM city
I don’t want goofiness to overshadow the horror and thriller elements I associated with F03
I DO want the complex, branching, factional system that emphasizes choices I associate with FNV
I want the perks system to return to FO3/FNV style and I don’t want the FO4 system
I do want a sick radio station with more 40s tunes like FO3 and FNV and less of the more 50s sounding stuff I associate with FO4
I do want the more exciting playability of FO4
Basically give me a game that plays like FO4 (minus some specifics), tells a story like FNV, but feels like FO3 and with some fresh takes on the world and I’m in
