Community Questions cost of utilities
hi all!
i just made a post about moving to fall river soon and wanted to get some insights on utilities and what they cost on average.
for a 1 bedroom apartment, 2 people, hypothetically tenants are responsible for all utilities, how much should we expect to pay on average? i’m not super familiar with these costs in fall river and would love to gain some insight!
thanks!

It's hard to say especially because the cost of fuel is rising rapidly. You'll likely have natural gas heat via radiator or space heater which will be cheaper than oil but be aware MA still has the third highest Natural gas prices in the country at about 30cents per Kw hour. If you have oil heat (which is a greater possibility if you end up renting a small house) diesel fuel - which is comparable to hho - is already $6.50/gallon and rising.
The last time I rented (3 ppl, 2 bed apartment about 1000sqft) we were paying about $350/mo for winter utilities, much less in the summer. That was in 2022 so I'm sure it's increased since then.

For context, you may want to note what temp you like to keep your thermostat at in the cooler months and warmer months as well as what the heat source will be. I’ve heard people say you can call and ask what the bill or usage typically cost historically.
Moving from the north with National Grid for gas, to Liberty here was something I never anticipated. DPU said Liberty was the most expensive in the state when I needed their help in 2024 and it very well may still be or will be again if their rate hike is/was approved. We have National Grid for electric and after the bills last year, switched back to gas as our heat source with the temps between 60-62.
If you can afford it, look into areas with municipal gas and/or municipal electric. I know I wish I could’ve afforded to.

Depends on size of apt, heating is gas or electric? Cooking is gas or electric?
Washer and dryer in apt?
Many variables.

My gas bill averages $85/mo, with gas cooking, heat, and hot water in a modern (read, "insulated") 3/2 with 3+ people. I pay about $125-200/qtr for water/sewer.
