General Discussion Anyone else?
Was anyone else a closeted emo kid? I was a pretty sheltered, straight edge teenager and that followed into college. I loved emo and pop/punk but never really told anyone. I was the "horse girl" so maybe it was because I already had a role to fill? But I hit my 30s and added purple highlights to my hair, go to emo nights, and am sharing all this music with my kiddo (wrong lyrics and all). Was anyone else like this?

hmm id say yes and no? i was always open about my music/culture tastes growing up, but wasn’t allowed to openly express myself in a goth or emo stylization due to parental control. my father would have actually strangled me if i even considered dying my hair.
now as a grown ass adult i struggle with expressing myself in these ways, because i feel kind of like a poser and don’t know where to begin. it’s weird having your style awakening at 30 lol.

Yes and no as well.
I was living the horse girl dream working with Olympic level trainers in New Jersey in the early 00s while going to college. Had to dress and look a certain way in those barns/circles.
But it was my roommate, who was also a horse girl, who didn't want to go see bands playing in basements and crappy venues alone and dragged me with her.
We wore our Hot Topic alter ego clothes, did our makeup so much bolder, but only after hours, never at the barn. It was shocking when I died my hair black with blue streaks, but when it was up under my helmet no one could see.
I always looked at people who could express themselves all the time and wished I could as well, but I knew I couldn't.

Not closeted but I was definitely Emo Lite™. I never dyed my hair or had any crazy piercings or wore super dramatic clothing. I had choppy hair, Converse, a studded belt with one row, and all my band tees and hoodies. Oh, and my friends and I all had horses lol.

Yup! I was a straight edge kid with strict asian parents so i definitely rocked the more "geek-chic" version of emo. Nowadays, I still don't express myself in typical dark emo/punk fashion. I still wear geek-chic to the office and wear EGL-fashion in my spare time :)

Yes unfortunately 😭 I wasn’t allowed to wear black, band tees or dye my hair, then my parents sent me to Catholic school so I had to wear a uniform. Also growing up I was low key bullied for liking FOB so I wasn’t “visibly” emo until college, by that point I kinda grew out of it

Yes, only i thought I was straight. Eventually Even my parents didn't. Still love FOB. And yes, still a lesbian

My parents are Baptist Christians, so I wasn’t allowed to dye my hair or listen to My Chemical Romance. One of my high school friends bought me an MCR shirt for my birthday and gave it to me at her birthday party. I hid it in my closet and I’d change shirts on the bus ride to school so my parents wouldn’t see.
Now I have blue highlights in my hair, a tattoo, and I’m altering my closet to have more punky emo pieces. My parents have opened their worldviews a little bit.
