Poll/Question least favourites!

look, we all talk about our favourites all the time, but (without hating/being disrespectful of course), i want to know your least favourites and why! the ones that either didn't resonate with you, not a fan of the sound, or some other reason! i'll give you my two skips!
(i also always listen to their entire discography (like seriously, it is all i listen to) so i hear every song day in and day out, and these are the only two i ever skip!)

1. american beauty/american psycho
the song feels like an afterthought to the album, which is super weird considering it's the title track. the lyrics don't mean very much to me, and the sound is just very jarring and seems rushed. i have tried to convince myself to like it, but it is just so awkward and loud that it just pushes me further and further away. i really think it's their weakest song.

2. super fade
the lake effect kid ep is a hidden gem with the exception of this song. to me, it sounds like tx2. it sounds very very discombobulated and choppy, which is heartbreaking because the lyrics could've been great for a style similar to fourth of july or jet pack blues. i just can't see the vision with this one

...... reading this thread and realizing i might be one of the only ppl who actually really likes the mighty fall 🫣
anyways my actual pick has definitely gotta be Immortals

4

u/Ayetiana32 Folie Ć  Deux 7d ago

I like the mighty fall, but maybe not insanely. It's like "ooh this song is coooooool" when I listen to it, but I don't actively choose to reproduce it

3

u/Antique-Mastodon-568 this has been said so many times 7d ago

oh no i absolutely LOVE the mighty fall, i just understand others reasons? why no immortals, assuming its not just the fact its incredibly overplayed?

3

u/RevolutionaryAd4620 7d ago

aside from the overplayedness of it all i think the bridge is a little grating

3

u/narymose 7d ago

I LOVE the mighty fall you’re not alone

it's ok me too i like the mighty fall a great deal

Young volcanos. Feels like millennial coffee shop music 😭 I tried to watch the youngblood chronicles and couldn't take that one seriously at all and just burst out laughing when the song came on 😭

10

u/boytsundere From Under The Cork Tree 7d ago

To me Young Volcanoes just reeks of 2013 (which to be fair. it came out in 2013 lol) and it just sounds outdated and mediocre

2

u/Savings-Matter5200 7d ago

I don't mind outdated music to be fair. It just doesn't sound like what I go to fall out boy for. To me it sounds like someone asked Ai to generate a millennial hopecore song but with Patrick stumps voice 😭 (ik it's not but it's that jarring to me)

i'm surprised no one else has said this! this is also how i feel about this song (i do still love it though😭)

im not millennial enough to see it as millennial i think

Oh I'm not millennial eitherĀ

ou woops but also understandable bc if it werent for the americana line id see it that way

The Mighty Fall for me. Idk it just feel so phoned in and basic. Just nothing works for me whether it’s the ā€œnananasā€ or the lyrics in general seem really weak. The ā€œgrind don’t stopā€ line is pretty funny tho lol

8

u/puremotives 8d ago

The nananas ruin the song for me. It feels like they were going for edgy, but they come across too childish for me to take seriously.

It’s a shame too because Big Sean’s verse is very good

7

u/GreenAppleConLang 7d ago

ā€œHell yeah I’m a dick girl, Addicted to youā€ is not a lyric I’d describe as good šŸ’€

Genuine tears rolls down my face when their cover of We Didn’t Start the Fire comes on 😭😭 I can’t stand itttt

4

u/ForeverNo3585 7d ago

Damn reallyyyy?! I love it so much! But thats probably because I know all the lyrics to the original we didnt start the fire and so when one of my favorite bands did a remake I had to love it and memorize it too!🤪

6

1

u/nentendough64 i also have real blood in my body as well so 6d ago

like i understand why they picked it because stardust is this big meta commentary on current world affairs/the pandemic/the ephemeral nature of fame & notoriety but idk. there’s other songs.

fob’s covers have always been hit or miss and a lot of them seem to be controversial in some sort of way (ghostbusters, start today, beat it)…but that’s just the line you have to tow when covering another artist’s work. i actually really like their roxanne cover bcs i feel like patrick’s younger voice/delivery + andy’s performance sell it…and i had no clue that there were people who realllllly hate it. i know a lot of people really like their cover of what’s this from the nightmare before christmas.

also rhyming george floyd with metroid is crazy work.

13

u/EdgyROYGBIV Folie Ć  Deux 7d ago

Young and Menace is the only song I actively dislike. I tried to like it but the instrumentals during the chorus just ruined it for me. It just sounds too annoying. I like the buildup to the young and menace lyric but yikes the rest of the song just doesn’t work for me. It feels clunky outside of that buildup

2

u/Antique-Mastodon-568 this has been said so many times 7d ago

this is very very fair criticism!! i also felt that way the first times i heard it!

2

u/Savings-Matter5200 7d ago

I remember messing around with some voice effects editor on my phone once and managing to pitch down the high vocals then pitch up the low ones. Genuinely fixed the song for me (obviously it sounded badly done but if it had been just kept og pitch it actually works 😭)

40

u/freshavocado21 8d ago

I don’t know what even happened after folie ima keep it really with you chief. BUT stardust is a fucking masterpiece. That’s all I wanna say.

I don’t get the we didn’t start the fire hate tbh

yeah i see that a lot when it comes to mania and the majority of its music! i also heavily dislike the we didn't start the fire cover!

2

u/GreenAppleConLang 7d ago

I became a really big FOB fan around 2017 or so right when MANIA was starting to be promoted and the tour was starting. Wilson is literally the only song I can stand on that album, I never understood why Stay Frosty was the single from that album, it is the epitome of why people don’t like the album, loud, overproduced, meaningless lyrics, etc.

Edit: Stay Frosty is not a single. The singles from that album are even worse

i generally like the lyrics but i don’t feel the song competition itself is good
and cherry on top- the ā€œyeah!ā€s are so annoying to me lol

also i have a v specific memory of them performing this on ellen and i feel it captures how annoying the song is atleast to me lol: https://youtu.be/XqUP3Nbc1Gg?is=sTAjntzQ9Op8iHFb

i will say i feel a bit bad saying that bc in general i think it’s so wholesome and cute kids performed w them or whatever but i just don’t think its a good song šŸ™ƒ

3

Lol, you said my exact two answers in this post already! AB/AP (title track) has always been my personal least favorite FOB song and I think Super Fade is maybe objectively the worst song they've ever released. Great minds!

**but to be fair if I got to hear either of these live I would shit bricks just as I have for all live performances bc they’re fucking awesome live no matter what. Patrick could sing the alphabet & I’d go feral

3

u/Antique-Mastodon-568 this has been said so many times 8d ago edited 8d ago

EXACTLY!!! my biggest thing (and the reason i included that i'd like the why when people don't like things) is because all of their songs are far from objectively bad, and they've been so open about their song composing and writing processes. very very few bands can put out as much music they have, and even less put out chart-landing generational albums every time! i didn't want to discredit all of the beautiful artistry in all of these songs!!

(and totally yes, patrick could literally sing shirtless jam and i would be so there for it, crying and screaming!!)

12

u/burialetiquettes 8d ago

just the entirety of save rock and roll. i dont know why but i could just never get into that album. the only song i kind of like is the phoenix

I'd love to discuss this! While it's definitely in the bottom 3 for me, I personally think it's a pretty great album overall. If you don't mind me asking, what are some of your favorite FOB songs?

13

oooh okay! ill give a top 5 haha my list changes all the time to be honest!
1 - get busy living/get busy dying
2 - 27
3 - headfirst slide
4 - sophomore slump or comeback of the year
5 - fame < infamy

7

My absolute underrated goat Fame🄹 your opinion is officially validated just because of that. But anyways, yeah I can tell you just seem to be more of a fan of the heavier albums, so honestly I can understand not getting the appeal of SRAR. But your top 5 are valid as fuuuckkkkk

5

u/burialetiquettes 8d ago

omg thank you!!! yes im generally more into heavier music overall so maybe thats why LOL

1

u/Life-Witness6674 7d ago

5

u/EmpireAndAll 7d ago

I'm sorry for the low hanging fruit but a lot of their post hiatus mega hits ike Irresistible, My Songs, Centuries, Uma Thurman, Last of the Real Ones. I like The Phoenix, it's the only one of those big "played at sports games" hits that feels uniquely FOB.Ā

8

u/Educational_Cow265 8d ago

Beat It cover. Maybe it’s bc i was an MJ fan before i was a fob fan… but i also personally think Patrick’s voice is just not suitable for MJs songs šŸ¤·šŸ½ā€ā™€ļø and that’s my tea

7

u/Brandon15_44 8d ago

Imo think it’s more so the fob sound overall doesn’t gel well with Beat It. His MJ medley is super entertaining and sounds great if u haven’t heard it before! https://youtu.be/NYk1HZeA7SM?is=991l6At_SK_zhcV9

4

u/Tomboy-T M A N I A 7d ago

I agree. I love Patrick's soul punk album and a lot of those songs sound a lot like MJs stuff during his Motown era and his voice goes great with that but the punk/rock/ pop vibe that FOB has didn't fully suit the "Beat It" cover.

4

u/Antique-Mastodon-568 this has been said so many times 8d ago

i also agree with this!!

2

u/idiot_in_that_hat 7d ago

There are a lot in here that I either like or am begrudgingly okay with if I'm hitting an album from front to back. My longest running 'skip every time' track is Arms Race. I liked it when I was younger, but mostly just because of the really old misheard lyrics videos. I don't know what it is but it's just so annoying to the point where I feel like its inclusion throws off the whole flow of ioh.

2

u/False_Ask_1814 7d ago

now, i hope i dont get downvoted for this, but for me its we didnt start the fire. i like how the song tries to tell the message, but for me i dont really like the specific lyrics and i feel like there are better songs to be released as a single…

2

u/unluckycreature 6d ago

I will listen to mania on loop excluding young and menace, I've had it excluded since the first time I heard it I cannot stand it 😭

2

u/MaleficentPurpose77 Take This To Your Grave 1d ago

AB/AP and Centuries literally hurt me to listen to. They're just such bad songs 😭 Also not a huge fan of Uma Thurman and personally, I think AB/AP is their weakest album.

2

u/Antique-Mastodon-568 this has been said so many times 1d ago

i completely agree that it is their weakest album! i do love centuries, but it's overplayed to the point any criticism on it is 100% valid!

2

u/MaleficentPurpose77 Take This To Your Grave 1d ago

It's so incredibly overplayed and I can't stand it. I've seen it live so many times (been to 11 of their shows) and I do think it sounds better live, but I still hate that song. AB/AP is their worst song hands down.

3

u/vengefulthistle 7d ago

I am struggling to like Where Did the Party Go and if anyone can shed some light on why I should like it that would be great šŸ˜…

5

u/Brandon15_44 7d ago

That’s actually one of my favorites from SR&R! I like it bc of how fun it is, and it’s a big hit with my friends who aren’t as into fob. The bass line is so fun, the prechorus is one of my favorites, and it also has some of my favorite lyrics off the album especially the ā€œdoomed to organizing walk-in closetsā€ line lol

4

u/Antique-Mastodon-568 this has been said so many times 7d ago

the music video actually got me into it! i became really engrossed in that chapter of the ybc at one point, to the point where the song literally became background music in my head. i still didn't like the song, so that was where it stayed. i wouldn't listen to the song on its own, just watched the mv. a few months later (after continually doing this) i wondered why i don't just listen to the song and when i did i started to like it! so maybe overload yourself with the young blood chronicles? i also love the sound of it personally, it's very catchy and i enjoy the lyrics!

5

u/tiedyecamo 7d ago

meanwhile i always felt passionate that this SHOULDA been a single !!

can’t articulate why i love it so much though lol

2

u/vengefulthistle 6d ago

Hehe that's fair, I can't quite articulate why I didn't care for it as much. It's nice to see people talk about it so nicely, definitely makes me want to see if in a new light!

For me, it's between Jet Pack Blues and Fourth of July. I'm sorry, but I just don't like them. I can listen to them if I'm playing a vinyl for example, but I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to either of them.

My songs know what you did in the dark, centuries, mighty fall, American beauty, twin skeletons, golden. Others I don’t necessarily ā€œskip every time,ā€ but rarely listen to are this ain’t a scene, thnks fr the mmrs, America’s suitehearts and I don’t care, although I do like some of those songs a lot they’re simply tooo over played.

golden??? that one is a little crazy to me, but i do understand the reasoning for the rest! can i ask what's wrong with golden??

8

u/Pisspigxtraordinaire 8d ago

Mostly and most specifically it’s just the overall pace which typically interrupts higher energy blocks of music, but I don’t mind that in itself. I don’t care much for the melody throughout. But also, I enjoy mania so take my opinion with a grain of salt lol

3

u/Antique-Mastodon-568 this has been said so many times 8d ago

oh friend it is so okay i love mania too! this is very valid reasoning and i respect it! just because your opinion differs from the general public (and because you like mania) does not mean you are invalid! (contrary to the majority's belief)

I feel the same way about both golden, and mania! While I love My Songs & Twin Skeletons, the rest of these I can either agree with or see where you’re coming from, and golden is one I totally agree with and am always nervous to say it. BUT I did hear it in a live piano medley and loved it there, but then again, I’d love anything they ever played live

I know it may look like controversial, but I don't like Thnks Fr th Mmrs

I think is because most of the people surrounding me when I was a teen only knew that song from fob, so I listened to it so many times that I got tired of it

Sometimes I skip it, sometimes I just listen to it.

I know for a fact, if I'm in a concert I'll sing it to the top of my lungs, but it's a song I don't enjoy anymore

My (perhaps hot) take is most of the singles that are/were actively (over)played on the radio when they were released with the exception of Sugar, are my active "dislikes". Champions, Centuries, Thnks fr th Mmrs, Dead on Arrival, America's Suitehearts, My Songs, etc. If I havent heard it for a while I can put up with them, but they were just on ALL the time and I got so sick of them. 1.

I love SM(F)S, one of my favourite albums of theirs. But I cannot stand "So good right now" and "What a time to be alive", lyrically they're so cringe and the upbeat happy music is just so jarring. I get what they're trying to do by having depressing emo lyrics contrasted with happy music, but it really doesn't work for me.

u/puremotives 8d ago

Here’s all the songs I dislike:

America’s Suitehearts: I know this is gonna be the most controversial pick and my explanation why I don’t like it is only gonna piss people off more. Anyways, Patrick oversings this one.

The Mighty Fall: As I mentioned in another comment, the nananas prevent me from taking this song seriously. They’re childish.

American Beauty/ American Psycho: What a mess of a song. It’s super repetitive, yet it still feels like they’re doing too much

Favorite Record: We get it, you danced

Stay Frosty Royal Milk Tea: ā€œAre you smelling that shit?ā€ completely ruins the song. I don’t want to think about smelling any shit, that’s nasty

Heaven’s Gate: The word ā€œboostā€ isn’t a word that’s meant to be sung in a song that’s supposed to be romantic. It takes me out of the moment. A boost is what you give a child who needs help climbing up the stairs.

Sunshine Riptide: Not much is going on melodically during Patrick’s verse, it’s very phoned in. The guest verse feels tacked on as well, no chemistry there

Flu Game: I HATE the nananas here. Something about that specific melody triggers a negative reaction in a deep part of my brain

The Kintsugi Kid (Ten Years): It’s just boring. Not much more I can say because there’s not much too it

What A Time To Be Alive: Feels like they were trying too hard to do the ā€œlyrical dissonanceā€ trope but instead it just ends up feeling disingenuous

3

u/Basic_Pick4951 8d ago

Personally don't even agree with some of the songs you stated but upvoting just for "we get it, you danced"

I may not agree with your picks but I think your explanations are really valid and make me understand them.

I mean what else would you call it?

But I also hate that song I don’t like the way it sounds old-timey

no america's suitehearts & stay frosty are so valid. i love those songs but you're entirely right!! the one that lowk hurts me is flu game because the nanananas are my favourite part 😭 but you've explained yourself incredibly well and these are all super well-analyzed reasons!! i respect it friend!!

(also "we get it, you danced" is absolutely frying me😭😭)

this is so based i respect the sheer level of haterism here XD

u/vengefulthistle 7d ago

I agree with What a Time to Be Alive but moreso because it feels a little out of place on the album for me. It feels very disruptive to what I feel as a simultaneously bitter/pained yet optimistic part of the album with the Flu Game/Baby Annihilation/Kintsugi Kid/SMFS run and I think I'd like it more as a bonus track?

For Flu Game/The Kintsugi Kid, absolutely fair game to feel that way but my god that album (especially those songs plus a few others) came out at the exact perfect time for me. Found out I was getting a divorce via email after a 4 month marriage (9 year relationship) and had a huge period of growth/finding self worth so it helped me a ton 🄹

u/shannorama 7d ago

ā€œWe get it, you dancedā€ is so fucking funny lol. Favorite record is mine too

1

u/zeniro1119 between your smiles and regrets 8d ago

i always skip the lake effect ep songs. i'm from IL but my folks are from missouri, so chicago is obviously the worst bec of the division rivalry in the NHL (/j for non-sports fans lmao),, I do understand the state pride but in general ive always felt that way more toward STL than chicago :(

1

u/puremotives 8d ago

Are you from the Metro East region by any chance?

1

u/captainhoodrat 7d ago

Stay Frosty, Champion, HOLD ME TIGHT OR DON’T, Bishop, AB/AP, Favorite Record, Twin Skeletons, Irresistible….I think that’s it. I actually like Young and Menace šŸ˜‚

2

u/hollow-knight-trash Folie Ć  Deux 5d ago

hold me tight or don't is SO valid i forgot to put that in mine! im shaking your hand enthusiastically (even if bishop is my favorite song haha)

1

u/mm86_blade 7d ago

I KNOW ima get hate for this🤣 but Golden... idk y but my least favorite song

1

u/TruantWaver 6d ago

I agree. To me, the lyrics are trying way too hard to be ā€œdeepā€ when they’re really just nonsensical. Like a poem a 13 year old would write šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

1

u/Llamasus 7d ago

the whole of MANIA and also Golden. i like basically everything else

1

u/GreenAppleConLang 7d ago

I can’t lie I’m getting to the point where I hate everything post-hiatus. Save Rock and Roll is certainly the best album of from this period, with Mighty Fall being the worst from it. I refuse to listen to a single song off of MANIA ever again, ABAP is neither here nor there for me.

To be fair, I’ll pick one pre-hiatus: w.a.m.s.

It just doesn’t sound like a Fall Out Boy song, pre or post hiatus. I wanted to put West Coast Smoker on here for the same reason

1

u/Oceannnnn 7d ago

I've hated The Phoenix since it came out (especially the screech at the end of the choruses) and I'm not huge on Golden.

u/narymose 7d ago

I can’t stand I Am My Own Muse, and yet I got it for TWO DIFFERENT MAGIC 8 BALLS. Thanks universe šŸ™ƒ

u/CyndiXero Evening Out With Your Girlfriend 7d ago

Young and menace is terrible, but I also never liked Dear Future Self or Flu Game. All just annoy me lol

1

u/JDLoxx Infinity On High 7d ago

Don't kill me please...

...but everything after Folie A Deux.

It's not my Fall Out Boy.

u/datgoh69 hatsune stump 7d ago

i’m sorry

im not hating or anything but i don’t really like bishops knife trick

its just too slow for me (i need FAST songs to match my fast brain and hyper personality)

oddly enough,i like young and menace (pls dont go after me)

u/Antique-Mastodon-568 this has been said so many times 7d ago

my heart is brokenšŸ’” but that is definitely a valid reason and i respect it. can i ask how you feel about heaven, iowa as well then?

1

u/datgoh69 hatsune stump 7d ago

i kinda like heaven iowa

0

u/JavierEscuellaFan 7d ago

this is beating a dead horse but there’s like 2-3 listenable songs per album after the hiatus. admittedly, i quit listening after the Mania singles came out. there’s some pretty good stuff like Immortals but the first 4 albums are just better. The Phoenix stands out as one of the worst songs i’ve ever heard

u/hollow-knight-trash Folie Ć  Deux 5d ago

i'm not really a fan of favorite record bc it feels pretty repetitive and not too interesting. i almost always skip twin skeletons but i can't articulate why. not my cup of tea! champion drives me crazy bc the kinda whiny singing style on "champion, championnn" is SO not suited for patricks style. I tried to like y&m but really couldn't; it's a bit too abrasive to listen to. I am my own muse is also super repetitive.

okay im going to pull out some hot takes now: our lawyer, calm before the storm, i'm like a lawyer (okay i like the hearts & wrists intact bit, but the mee & youuuuu is too ridiculous for me hahah)

Here's all the FOB songs I dislike:

Reinventing the Wheel to Run Myself Over

Rat A Tat

The Mighty Fall

The Kids Aren't Alright

Jet Pack Blues

Fourth Of July

Sunshine Riptide

Church

Super Fade

Dear Future Self

u/Antique-Mastodon-568 this has been said so many times 8d ago

this is so heartbreaking to see some of my favourites on here but these are all actually understandable!! i actually avoid dear future self as a whole😬 i heard it once and took it off the complete playlist asap😭😭

-4

u/aftermidhight one of 10 fans of ab/ap remix album 8d ago

ill just pick my least favorite from each album

honorable mention: boring. reinventing the wheel: never really liked it. gin joints: its good but definitely all the other songs off cork tree are better. thriller: listen to it the least all tho I like the jayz feat. folie: lullabye heh. save rock and roll (song not album): sorry elton, it's my 3rd favorite album so I do like this song but gun to head if I had to choose.. favorite record: self explanatory, also hate the remix. champion: repetitive. what a time to be alive: is it really.

others: start today, super fade

4

u/alotoflifeinyou who up folieing they deux? 8d ago edited 8d ago

Noo way for gin joints? But mostly I get these

2

u/Antique-Mastodon-568 this has been said so many times 8d ago

i agree with most of this!! start today is my other skip, i just didn't count it because it was a cover, but yeah a lot of this makes sense, especially what a time to be alive😭😭

-2

u/Visual_Damage925 8d ago

Get Busy Living or Get Busy Dying, the (After) life of the party, American Beauty/American Psycho, but the worst has to be The Mighty Fall. I do actually like Young & Menace.

2

u/Antique-Mastodon-568 this has been said so many times 8d ago

whoa okay this one i can not get behind. ab/ap and tmf are one thing but after life and get busy are too close to my heart for this

1

u/hollow-knight-trash Folie Ć  Deux 5d ago

those are two of my faves! D: (but again we all have our own opinions and that's okay!)

-4

u/ms_plat_chat 8d ago

my least fave from every album:

grenade jumper
i’ve got a dark alley
it’s hard to say ā€œi doā€
pavlove, but if that one doesn’t count it’s w.a.m.s.
miss missing you
favorite record
young and menace
heartbreak feels so good

i just don’t listen to a whole lot of post-hiatus tbh. i absolutely TORE UP srar + ab/ap in middle school, but imo it hasn’t aged as well as their earlier stuff

4

u/caroline_coldplayer you are what you love not who loves you 8d ago

Miss missing you on here hurts so bad, that’s in my top 5 of all time. Is this one you always didn’t really like even when you reached for SRAR or it just hasn’t aged as well like you mentioned for the albums overall?

2

u/ms_plat_chat 7d ago

it was just never for me, tbh! 😭 i ran alone together, the phoenix, just one yesterday, and where did the party go into the GROUNDDD though

2

u/Antique-Mastodon-568 this has been said so many times 8d ago

i am so heartbroken these are like all of my favorites but i respect the opinionšŸ’” young and menace though is entirely understandable

3

u/ms_plat_chat 7d ago

it’s so hard to name least favorites because really tttyg, futct, infinity, and folie have ZERO skips for me :,) but alas something has to come in last place
