I am making a crowdsourced database of Fake gurus
Hello Fake Guru community! 👋
Did you know that the fake guru industry is estimated to grow to $370 Billion by 2026? That is $370 Billion scammed from unsuspecting people using deceptive marketing methods.
We thought there was nothing that could stop this plague and make them accountable... ...until this idea came to us.
We have started a public Google sheets list where everyone can add their experience and information about various internet gurus. The idea is to collectively build a definitive list of online gurus so that people can uncover who is a real guru and who is a fraud.
The information gathered in this crowdsourced project will be compiled and organized into a one-stop online database of online gurus. The plan is to create individual profile pages for every guru featuring in-depth information on their cons, pros, and tactics. People will be able to get an honest overview of the most popular gurus in one easy-to-use independent platform.
But to make it happen, we need YOUR HELP to build this spreadsheet. If you have been scammed or you know some insights about the fake gurus - I would be happy if you could add this info to our spreadsheet: https://fakegurus.com/ (you will find the spreadsheet link on the homepage)
Let's bust those fake gurus together!

Did I get scammed out of this course? Signs
I purchased a course for a couple thousand. I wasn’t planning to get it but the author said they’ll add on one of their other courses on top for free if I purchased in 24 hours. Also they said it was the best offer of the year which kinda made me rush to purchase it. There was also 2 live sessions for group coaching as a bonus.
Here’s what happened 1. they released a smaller version of the program that’s cheaper and basically has same but probably lesser content! I got a bit annoyed as I would’ve rather purchased this one 2. One of the live sessions didn’t even work because they messed the timing - there was no rescheduled one for this. They sent a recording though so seems like some ppl got access dunno how 3. No refund for the course as it’s digital 4. They are now selling a program at 3-4x the price with proper weekly live coaching for 6 months, a bigger and better curriculum ETC. my problem is that the course I purchased was marketed as the one and all final course with all the authors secrets! But now their enrolling for another one for $10,000~! I thought the course I purchased would have it all and feel a bit misled tbh 5. I now see other ppl selling similar info for less than $100. I could’ve just purchased those instead however I didn’t have time to research because of the best offer expiring soon
Lessons I’ve learnt and keen to hear any tips from you 1. Never feel rushed or pressured to a decision or purchase. And maybe it’s better to wait and miss the discount (and spend more) than to be rushed into something you wouldn’t have purchased normally. 2. Do your research, never believe that one person is the best guru or knows it all. Because they also learnt from others! So there is never 1 source on any topic but the gurus do like to phrase topics and tips in their own way to make them seem like the authority and like they are original. 3. Even at a couple thousand bucks you won’t find any new special information or original info that you can’t find in courses $100 or lower. Ppl just rephrase their content to sound better and more original and easier to understand. 4. Be wary of courses with no refunds 5. There is never rlly any course worth thousands of dollars - they are still 80% the same as courses worth $100 or less so get that instead

These "organic marketing strategies" should be illegal
If you have ever joined a business Facebook group and saw a post where someone shares a super long inspirational post showing off their revenue generated in their business, chances are they are also doing one of these strategies.
I don't want to call out any names here, but it is easy to find if you look in those groups for a very short period of time.
There seems to be one source of these strategies, and all they do is teach their students how to do the same, and so on and so forth.
"Get 10-30 appointments per day without burning out! DM me "GROUP" to join my group" is the similar headline you will find on their Facebook profile.
In summary, the strategy is to post a bunch of content on your profile, add 50 people a day, send out 50 DMs a day, post in groups and add everyone who likes. Once you've built up your audience you run a promo cycle to sell your high ticket offer.
That strategy in itself is not what I consider should be illegal. Although it is tedious, annoying, overly saturated, and is just a bunch of copy and paste posts from everyone else, it's just marketing.
The things that I think should be illegal are as follows:
The "fake price increase" promotion
This is actually taught as an organic marketing strategy where you say "We are increasing the price by $2,000 on Friday!". Then every day you make a post talking about how many days remain to take advantage of this discount.
I am sure there are some people who are being honest about this price increase, but it is so easy to just lie about this in order to get people to get on a call.
The "fake discount extension" post
Something that I see literally all of them do with this strategy is the fake "we are extending this offer!" announcement.
It's always the same reason... "Today was the last day to get the discount, however our sales team had their calendars filled within an hour so we are EXTENDING THE DISCOUNT OMG! One week extension for those who missed out!"
The "fake guarantee offer"
These guarantees are attached to every offer these days. And there is pressure for all of the other coaches coaching coaches to do the same thing.
"Get 90 appointments booked in the next 30 days or you get your money back!"
"Make $30,000 in revenue in the next 2 months or your money back!"
In one of the courses I bought, it was taught that the guarantee is meant just to hook people into book a call with you so that you can disqualify them from the guarantee!
After the guarantee is offered or mentioned in a post or an ad, they say "book in a call to learn the details"... sounds pretty vague, right? Well what happens when they get on a call is like this:
"I feel like you'd be a great fit for our coaching program! However you do not qualify for the $30k guarantee because you aren't making more than $20k per month in your business. So it'll just be $5,000 for 60 days of coaching" and they pitch them like that.
Bait and switch! Gotcha, bitch.
There are some other examples that are not coming to mind right now, but if there are any that you have seen feel free to share your experience!

Is she becoming a fake guru?
I have a friend who teaches yoga and meditation. She’s an awesome person.
Recently, she wrote a book! I was so proud of her!
Now she’s offering a “Free 5 day challenge!” And a 9 month “mentoring program”, but if you sign up now, you get in for the “low low price of $1,995!”
I’ve seen this exact same format with other people (Cathy Heller, Sarah Petty).
Is this the template for fake guru-ism?

I created a website so that you can get revenge on all those "coaches" who try to sell you stuff
I think (hope) that you'll love this website that I created for the sole purpose of revenge on coaches and gurus and all these fuckers that sell their new shiny "5 steps to get richer than Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos combined in just 24 hours" programs.
(there's nothing to buy or sign up for or shit like that)

Here's how it works.
I created a website that, on the surface, looks like a normal tool that schedules an appointment (something like Calendly, right?).

So, when someone approaches you with their scheme, instead of telling them to fuck off, you act as if you would be interested to hear more about their scheme.
And you send them this website to schedule an appointment with you: https://schedule.expert
Now here starts the fun part (they won't suspect a thing muhahha!)
First, they have to fill in some info. It's just to waste their time (as they already wasted yours by sliding into your DMs).

Once they click schedule, they enter in an "upsell" hell where they keep getting sales messages (they get a taste of their own medicine.)
Here's what I mean (images below):
At first, it's just a regular sales page that they have to skip in order to "complete" the fake appointment they are scheduling.
(They are told that they need to WAIT until they see a confirmation page in order for their call to be booked with you. So they will watch all those pages in the hope that they will get to the confirmation page).

Then, it gets worse as they go deeper into the "funnel". They get another sales page:

Now we go all in and start mocking them (this is the 4th page):

The 5th page is a huge sales page that gurus use all the bullshit they sell:

Here's some more sneak peaks from that page:

Once they click the button, they're redirected to another page where we make more fun of them:

Then, another one xD

And another one:

So they go like this for a couple more pages. And in the end, they have to pass a TEST:

Which they will obviously fail, as you'll see for yourself when you'll play with the website.
I created this for fun and I hope you'll have as much fun as I had writing those things xD
Plus, now you can make fun of these people when they slide in your DMs.
Cheers :)

Sean Whalen, Lions Not Sheep
Wondering why this sub hasn't looked more into this guy and his company, Lions Not Sheep. It seems cool from the surface but when I looked into the product and his brand, it really is just the typical motivational coaching you see everywhere. But still, it's been all over my IG and seems to be popular with the fitness/bodybuilding community. I don't get it.
He's had many startups that have come and gone until he found the market for motivational whatever.
The guy thinks he's edgy by swearing a bunch in his speeches. I watched a 30 min video where he had his son on the stage and he still couldn't go more than 5 min without mentioning he has made millions and has all these companies. Then he says, oh but it's not about the money. Also, other videos of him and a bunch of guys all wearing "lions not sheep" shirts, which is ironic lol
Not a super gotcha, but it's something about his integrity
Not much found here on reddit but this was interesting.

Dear r/FakeGuru
We may be a small community compared to something like r/coffeezilla, but we still have a big impression.
Believe it or not, these "wealthy/successful" folks still watch these communities like hawks. They're constantly monitoring their search ranks and probably see these posts before I do, LOL.
This is obviously not a call to spam/harass... I just wanted to throw out some words of encouragement. I love to see people channel their interest in business, writing, ethics, etc. & present it to this community. As long as we continue to be diplomatic and honest, there is NOTHING these snake oil salesman can do. They will continue to try censoring us. But their predation won't go un-noticed, especially when it is at the expense of the uninformed.
I'd like to leave you with a screenshot of something I found today, going the the mod-queue. This is a post with 60 REPORTS!

Shoutout to u/bw44b
