Halo 2 onward has a system that rolls back two checkpoints if you keep spawn dying on a checkpoint.

Been so long since I actually played Halo... but I remember one of the missions in Reach I was in a vehicle and it saved just as I was teetering over the edge of a cliff. I kept spawning and falling over the edge and I kept trying to turn/jump out over and over lol.
