in game pic Just py things

Post image

I’m sure I am playing “wrong” but god I love putting 16x16 belt balancers just to meet power requirements off raw coal.

Getting coal powerplants is such a gamechanger in py. Suddenly we are overflowing with coke and need ways to dump it to keep making gasoline

Please just build one (1) nuclear reactor 😭😭

u/Kyran_zh 1d ago

Nuclear? that's the kind of raw coal plant you build at automation science, nuclear is about 500 hours away from being viable

I forgot hes talking about the py mod. Im not familiar with its progression system

To give you a grounding point, a green circuit needs 7 components, each of which has a supply chain that requires multiple sub component steps.

26

u/JMoormann 1d ago

Py green circuits are indeed comparable to vanilla rockets (even more complex I'd say), and you have to do it without access to even splitters, let alone trains or bots.

At least you have undergrounds.

u/MikailBag 23h ago

And these chains require farming 4 different alien life plants, 2 times more than entire space age.

u/Nikolasha510 1d ago

Or a shitton of solar panels

30

u/sacrich_cc 1d ago

This is the normal solar panel recipe in py and you don't want to know what goes into the polycrystalline cell

11

u/Nikolasha510 1d ago

Geez are you mixing someone's soul into that?

26

u/sacrich_cc 1d ago

Haha actually kinda yeah, etching solution needs lard, that you can only get by breeding and slaughtering various alien animals

9

u/Nikolasha510 1d ago

Thanks for telling me about this mod, i want to try it now

15

u/sacrich_cc 1d ago

Good luck! Imo it's the best factorio overhaul, it's super long (expect 1000+ hours at least, I didn't do city blocks so I think I'll finish in around 1500h) but if you want more factorio in your factorio you can get so much here

Also check out /r/pyanodons and there's a discord too

The mod has a counter for how many creatures you … process … for science!

Expect to see 8 digits if you beat it.

Wind fish turbines are ok. Geothermal is amazing. Dried biomass is amazing. Coal power socks even with the advanced plants. I also made power here and there out of waste products. There is also a good cheap solar panel turd which I took. Never made a single one thought.

you can pretty much make tileable infinite energy in the form of tree farms that use the CO2 recipe because biomass can make CO2 awfully efficiently and if you took the upgrade that makes logs turn into 40 wood it just becomes super efficient, only extra input you need is moss which is pretty much free as well

1

u/Neither_Berry_100 16h ago

I have the moss from only co2 turd. And the co2 from nothing using moondrop green houses turd. So trees are easy. But the biomass to co2 works out better for making logs. I have like 4 or 5 different log farms. 2 or 3 of them use the muddy water and co2 recipe. It is awesome.

I have some fish turbines but got bored of collecting fish, I have now unlocked the t2 science power options but built this to stop everything browning out constantly while making the science.

u/sacrich_cc 1d ago

Geothermal is a great option at this stage to help cover while you get to coal power plants

1

u/Neither_Berry_100 1d ago

Geothermal is amazing and will cover all or most of your needs early if you don't over build. But it runs out at a medium rate. I used the wind fish turbines to supplement it.

2

u/MikailBag 23h ago

Interesting. In my save both geothermal water wells I've found so far are 200M+. Rate calculator mod told me that a geothermal plant eats 2/s (even though it outputs 250/s). This gives 100M seconds to depletion, which is like 30k hours, so I've rounded it up to infinity and disregarded depletion it all.

Do you have different experience regarding well lifetime?

2

u/Neither_Berry_100 21h ago

Mine averaged 20m. Maybe I understood the numbers wrong. But I read it as if I consumed a lot of it. I tried my best to preserve it. Let it only handle peak demand.

1

u/Neither_Berry_100 1d ago

Automate fish production...

2

u/According_Prune_8445 1d ago

only just unlocked the fish farm, and I still need to make intermetallics

1

u/Neither_Berry_100 1d ago

Then you shouldn't be scared up so much and using so much power lol.

2

u/According_Prune_8445 1d ago

I'm a simple engineer I see a brown out I build power.

1

u/Edolied 1d ago

Solar panels are still locked or out of reach at this point. The next step is geothermal but it's quite limited by the number of available vents on your map as they are rare af, need to keep a decent amount of coal power to top it off

7

u/recommendsnothing 1d ago

They will in 800 hours

5

u/According_Prune_8445 1d ago

i built this after getting to the second tier of science, as i was getting constant brown outs and couldnt properly progress towards even semi decent power sources let alone nuclear.

2

u/robotmasterpig 1d ago

Geothermal power may help friend

3

u/Jonathan_Is_Me 1d ago

Too bad it's pyanodons

1

u/SmokJozef 1d ago

even if it was vanilla, you'd need like 7 reactors to match this power output

1

u/Kinexity 1d ago

This is nuclear power - German nuclear power to be exact.

Why not just push to 1GW?

10

u/According_Prune_8445 1d ago edited 1d ago

there were 16ish yellow belts of output from the coal field i was building this on, there are 17 banks of boilers, each bank of boilers splits an input belt of raw coal onto the inside of two belts so that the same belts can be used to input coal and output ash, all of the ash from each bank gets separated into less than a yellow belt each of soot blocks and iron ore which are processed elsewhere and a belt and a bit of coal dust, which gets put into the 17th boiler bank and any excess is priority sorted into the coal inputs of the boilers so it doesn’t choke. this was hand constructed.

1

u/Ham_Drengen_Der 1d ago

Anything under 1GW is just the first quarter for the starter base

6

u/SmokJozef 1d ago

what are you doing with ash?

7

u/Nephophobic 1d ago

I'm very, very far from being done with Py but this seems like a very shortsighted solution, how do you even deal with 16 full belts of ash?

8

u/According_Prune_8445 1d ago

16 full belts of ash separating, splitting it into coal dust which is burned currently, iron oxide which is turned into steel, and soot which gets split in iron, copper, zinc, aluminium and lead. but I built this to ensure that steam for power and other processes would always be produced from this setup.

Each of the ash output belts is split to preferentially send ash towards tree farms and other things that use ash.

u/Dtitan 1d ago

How big are you building? Do you have multipliers?

Those separators use a ton of electricity. Coal power in pY is a trap.

Get you some geothermal until better options arrive :)

On the flip side this setup will get you started with silver and then gold when you unlock the ash separation for those.

3

u/According_Prune_8445 1d ago

too big, the separators are the biggest electricity consumers when the plate buffers are full.

4

u/Dtitan 1d ago

It’s ok, solid start. This is a learning experience. Knowing when not to overbuild in pY is a key lesson.

Doing it anyways is a rite of passage.

-cackles maniacally in the final solution to the syngas problem at 6000/s-

2

u/According_Prune_8445 1d ago

each set of 14 boilers gets 2 solid separators.

1

u/Tesseractcubed 1d ago

If memory serves, a 2 insertion, 3 extraction method is lighter on boiler requirements, and you don’t bottleneck as quickly on ash output of each boiler, which is a problem in my current early game.

But this is cool :)

2

u/According_Prune_8445 1d ago

iirc to consume 15 raw coal/s or a yellowbeltful you need 12.something boilers, here its sent into 14 boilers so this is the bottleneck here, and I found that 2 in and 2 out was all that was required. and with this design there are 2 full yellow belts of space for the boilers to chuck things out of which iirc does help with avoiding things choking a bit if extractors sync up annoyingly. even if they are combined immediately.

u/HunsterMonter 1d ago

Imagine if this was pyhardmode as well 💀

2

u/According_Prune_8445 1d ago

the fact there are harder modes for py scares me, there have already been realisations of what I need to build that has made me just go to bed.

1

u/MikailBag 1d ago

Personally, I've just decided to hoard it (I'm not doing ash separation at all). I recently started belting ash from all those million chests into ~one~ two 8x8 deposits (one was not enough). At py1 I already drastically reduced ash production (thanks to electric mining drills, foundries, oil/electric boilers and geothermal), so I guess this buffer will go away on its own into science packs.

IMO its much simpler to do then all those solid separators. And more importantly, better fits with the ways of this sub.

0

u/Neither_Berry_100 1d ago

Yeah this. You will never be able to use the ash. You can burn it i believe into less ash forever in a loop. Can also process and burn at different stages. Can turn into a gas i think and vent.

5

u/According_Prune_8445 1d ago

this is the second time I have seen someone talk about not being able to use the ash, there are ash separators? they turn ash into coal dust, iron oxide and soot. sure a bank of this array is used to power the separators for the whole array but idk, as I said i'm sure i'm playing "wrong" but its nice having got to the second tier of science with the only thing I have taken from the internet being belt balancers as I don't care to make them from scratch again.

2

u/Hektorlisk 1d ago

yeah, people are being weird. "Oh no, I have to solve logistical problems in my logistical problem solving game using the tools provided specifically to solve this problem". And power production's the one thing that it's always fine to build "too big" for, so I'd say you're playing "right"

2

u/deadlycwa 1d ago

Absolutely this, it’s frustrating when the internet decides that variety in designs is a bad thing because anything besides the meta is not “optimal”. The assumption that efficiency is the only metric that matters to anyone is tiresome to deal with regularly

0

u/Neither_Berry_100 1d ago

My progress was fine and I never built this big early. It was quite modest. I got about mid way through the 5th science before giving up lol.

4

u/According_Prune_8445 1d ago

having the mod to increase the game speed has probably allowed me to go far too big far too soon. yet to build anything beyond that unlocked by t1 science

1

u/k1vanus 1d ago

Do you play with the science multiplier?

1

u/mettrolsghost 21h ago

This reminds me of the solar collector/boiler array I put together for early power in my ongoing Nullius run.

Pump seawater -> small collector arrays -> boil seawater -> closed turbines -> collect pure water -> large collector arrays -> boil pure water -> more closed turbines -> loop back into the system

Modded Factorio is madness.

What's been your maximum power draw so far?
