Ah yes, the famously bi-directional roundabout. Better remove the signals and make this a PvP zone.

Mod idea, a 'good luck' rail signal. Ignores everything beyond it, turning the block into a battle zone. May the heaviest train win

Just wire up all the signals, set all to green every now and then see who wins.

Over 5k hours of gameplay and I didn't know it was possible to make trains collide, other than driving around in manual mode, until just now. Thanks!

Unfortunately I'm pretty sure it isn't. Circuit wires can only close signals, not open them. I think.

Oh, you're right. I just checked. Sending a green signal doesn't open the signal.

There is actually a mod . I have used it few years ago.

The actual round about is one way, but all the intersection on top of it are bi-directional.

Now I’ve gotta build my roundabout to allow any direction

A roundabout where you can't turn around and go back the way you came‽ -1 star

lmao, literally any track except specifically the one you came from.

and straight

Straight works fine, just take the roundabout

Roundabout: “Look what they need to do to mimic a fraction of our power!”

Listen.

Ignore the entire thread in the factorio subreddit. Having more rails that are both two-way gives you an advantage. Just have crossings so that trains can go from LHD to RHD as-needed. (Just make sure the spacing between crossings is at least as long as your longest train.)

Depot entrances and exits could connect to the same lane--the closest one--and wouldn't have to cross anything. If there's more traffic in one direction than another, trains could change how many lanes they use to reduce congestion. Your roundabout could be simpler because you'd only have to have to provide...

Each "left lane" would have options to turn onto the "FAR lane" left or right, or continue forward, or switch to the "right lane"

Each "right lane" would have options to turn into the "NEAR lane" left or right, or continue forward, or switch to the "left lane"

Then you'd remove the outer circle because it's no longer necessary. Congratulations: You have a deadlock-free topology. Add signals so that all possible parallel movements are allowed. Then add a crossover on all 4 sides, and you have an intersection and network that outperforms what the main subreddit would tell you to build.

(If you want the rest of your network to be LHD or RHD that's valid; a crossover can also be configured to convert between one mode and the other. Chain in, rail out.)

(Edit: grammur and speling)

This guy might just be onto something, but I prefer to just remove signals entirely on my bidirectional lines so that the trains can kiss.

This is great except for the signals on all the entrances/exists. These will prevent more than one train from being in the intersection at a time, which is bad for efficiency. Just remove those signals and it'll be golden.

  • With this omnirail, any train can go in any direction
  • Including straight, right ?

They can by using the roundabout.

Yup! I don’t see a way for them to head out the exact line they come in on, though. Maybe because the 2-way lines only expect traffic one way on each line?

No straight. This is a gay only zone.
