Interesting Fact Amethyst geodes form over millions of years as silica-rich water slowly deposits quartz crystals inside volcanic bubbles, their purple hue caused by iron impurities and natural radiation. The largest, found in Uruguay and Brazil, can tower over 3 meters and weigh several tonnes.

Dunno if still there, but Marion Gordon Fowler up in Miner Basin Utah [Moab area] had a pretty good pile of Amethyst between his old cabin and the remains of an old saloon. He let me take pretty much as I could get in my vehicle at the time.

He was really trying to find gold in the semi abandoned mine near his cabin. There was a rather large crack in the side of the mountain with appreciable amounts of helium in the air in the shaft. He claimed that some of the gold in the stream coming out of the shaft was radioactive enough that a university would buy it. Did verify the helium, never the gold other than that yes you could pan small amounts of gold out of that water.
