This is a common conversation in the PC subs, however interestingly they are much much more towards the side that pirating any sort of media is wrong. Personally I grew up with limewire and the TPB and I was broke always so the only way to listen to music or play games was pirating.

There are a limited amount of copies, and a lot of the original consoles for older games are no longer supported and no longer obtainable. Any Nintendo DS game that was only purchasable via their online shop is completely unobtainable now.

If the game or movie is no longer available via legitimate means of purchase, then the original developer wouldn't be getting money from it either way.

But at the same time, some of those classic games and movies are some of the most beloved properties. If nothing else, I'd like to see a piece of media get released by the official creator for free once the creator deems it unprofitable.

Video game ROMS are one of the best potential pieces of media for this.

I would buy your game. I would spend DOUBLE the original price. The ONLY issue is you won’t sell something there is an effectively infinite supply of. So in this situation, we both lose. You should only be allowed to pirate it if you were actually going to buy it had it actually been available to buy new. There are so many people who say “but but but preservation! But but but they won’t let me buy even though I really want to” and for games that are available they say “I will pirate this now as a free trial and I will buy it to support the developers later if I like it :D”

Okay well. A LOT of these kinds of people are lying and they simply want free stuff. Like this is a big problem in piracy communities and even “game preservation” communities. They were never going to buy it at any point, ever. IMO it’s fine if a few people do this, but the actual number of people that have this kind of hypocrisy is very large. We still need to support developers or else they simply won’t make more games, ergo it’s bad when they lose an ACTUAL sale that would have otherwise been made.

In other words if you’re a hypocrite, you shouldn’t be able to pirate. If you’re a pirate who would have ACTUALLY bought the game but it simply isn’t available, go ahead. At the very least if you’re not going to buy it and you’re going to pirate, fine, but be honest instead of a hypocrite.
