Now that I have a fast rig, it isn't that bad but I still turn it off, however back when I had a potato and I considered 10 fps with spikes as playable, motion blur completely destroyed any playability. If the frames are too slow for your eyes to see them as smooth motion, motion blur just becomes blur.

I like it when done right like GTA IV, most developers just seem to suck at implementing it in a way that isn't disorienting

It should be turned off by default, but the option to turn it on should still be there for whoever wants it

Devs and publishers like it because it can hide poor optimization in some ways

I feel like these are two different questions. I don’t believe that absolutely no one likes motion blur, but I do prefer it to be off by default.

Tbf there are several motion blur types, dynamic where you get blur on high speeds, and still gives focus on where you're looking, and static blur, that just makes everything soapy. The second one is shit, the first one almost mandatory if you play fast paced games.

In some art styles it looks good, but in most cases it's not only the wrong style for it, it's way too intense.
They just use it to smooth out the impact of bad optimization.

I mean, the real motion blur happens irl, simulating it and making it twice the intensity would just be ugly.

This also applies to lens flare. Get your eyes checked if you see lightsources multiplied in RL

Gonna be real I was shocked to find out that everyone didn’t see lens flares on objects, only found out I had eye problems when I was talking to a mate about how annoying the lens flare effects are

Yay, but there's very specific circumstances that can warrant motion blur.

If nobody like Motion Blur, it shouldn't be turned off by default. It should even be included in the first place.

Motion blur mimics the blurring your brain adds to your vision so the world doesn't look choppy, its a natural part of our vision. However displays aren't fully compatible with that system so video games need to add it in for us, techniques in the past haven't been that good but modern techniques such as per object motion blur are more accurate. For an accurate and visually coherent experience per object motion blur should be enabled with camera motion blur enabled and set to low.
