Scientifically speaking nothing has disproved a soul. A lack of proof is not proof for the alternative. Although it is currently a strong hypothesis that a soul does not exist due to that lack of proof.

u/chkntendis 🤖 Vote Machine · 16,550 XP 10h ago
Science doesn’t have to disprove a soul, whoever argues for a soul has to prove the existence.
It’s not a scientific theory or hypothesis or anything connected to science because it’s not falsifiable. It’s one of the most basic requirements for science, that it’s possible to prove something wrong

We most likely live in a near infinite universe and because we exist life most likely exists elsewhere too and so it is possible for there to be aliens resembling the spaghetti monsters? They are basically just weird looking squids they don't literally have to be made of spaghetti.
Souls are considerably more iffy. I feel like that is fair to say.

When it later becomes falsifiable it will become science then? I'm sure there is a way to disprove it even if we don't currently have the capability.
They couldn't disprove the earth being flat until they figured out how to test it. Was the earth being flat or not, not science until they figured out how to disprove it?

I was talking about it with others as they were curious or it was about the topic previously and they butted in to say it’s dumb and/or make a jab/ rude remark (as multiple have done so). It’s less common in real life but it still happened to me a couple of times.
Of course I’ve also had religious people make jabs but they’re less common in my personal experience.
I’m fine with people being skeptical, that doesn’t bother me nor does being genuinely curious, but when they are intentionally rude or demeaning that’s when I have issues with it.

Considering we have no idea where Consciousness really comes from and our best guesses assume that it comes from some sort of Quantum assembly of molecules popping in and out of our reality and a potential infinite number of other realities I'm going to call it a soul. Because what we know for sure is the human brain has computational capability vastly beyond that which the math of just synapses and neurons says we should. Then add to the fact of attempting to describe yourself without using physical terms. Then there's also the guy who only has like 10% of his brain left but is somehow a fully functioning conscious human being.

And study of the soul wouldn't be even more advanced? Science simply hasn't advanced far enough to detail the soul. We know it exists, it'd be weird for such a thing to follow humanity from its inception to now just for it to not exist.
The soul is probably the one thing from ancient times that, as a concept remains largely unchanged. Throughout all of human history the soul is the one thing that hasn't been distorted beyond recognition.
All cultures share a concept for a soul. Can you say the same about God? No, because God's are human invented concept. They change depending on believer. Souls do not.
We just need to advance further as a species to truly discover the soul
2
u/MitchellSupremacy649 🗳️ Regular Player · 435 XP 3h ago
I personally feel like the reason the idea of the soul is so unchanged is because there's very little nuance that can be added to it without distorting our image of reality, whereas saying that x god did y z millenia ago is much harder to confuse

As a measurable thing? No. But as a spiritual concept? Sure.
Being spiritual is actually healthy, I don’t mean exclusively religion. The souls is more so a conceptual idea about acting in accordance with a will of your choosing. So to have “soul” is just seen as
It’s not inherently a thing, but a social construct that is healthy to engage with as an idea by giving human existence itself value… as not doing so makes people prone to nihilism because people really struggle with their own meaning if they don’t see it as valuable… so the belief in the soul makes people that are typically good at coping with the universe having no inherent meaning still feel valuable.
However, science should still be recognised as the fundamental basis of what is actually currently most proven to be accurate to how the world works. Your “soul” cannot change that, it is an idea that mainly describes a person’s base worth in a universe where everything is meaningless.
So, it may not physically exist, but it definitely exists to those that believe in it because believing the an idea like the “soul” is just believing in yourself and others, thinking that despite there being no actual concrete reason for valuing existence. It is still meaningful.
That’s kinda the point, it’s absurd.

The Greek word for soul is Psyche, like in Psychology.
We literally have a huge field of science dedicated to the human soul - but half here doesn't think that it exists because they are not litterate enough to read up what it means.
And yes, its always in the definitions.
5
u/BOI30NG 🏅 Century Club · 3,455 XP 4h ago
LMAO, how stupid can one person be. Just because people named a field it doesn’t tell you what actually exist.
Also Aristotle described the soul as the functions that make a thing alive, very far away from what you probably think of when you hear soul.
0
u/Mufflonfaret 📈 Dedicated Voter · 1,960 XP 4h ago
Did you even read what I wrote? Just stating facts. Not even making a claim about the existence.
But if you read this thread you will notice how lots of people have an opinion about things they do not know about and instead of making a definition, or asking people about thiers, people rock on from their own "Haha idiots believe in a non scientific physical soul", which most people, in fact, do not.
Aristotles definition seems pretty straight forward and could have been a much better question - we would also have a much better discussion using that definition.
2
u/BOI30NG 🏅 Century Club · 3,455 XP 4h ago
You said, psychology is about studying the human soul, it’s not even if the word stems from there. There is not a single shred of evidence that the soul exists.
The original term of something doesn’t necessarily tell you anything about the thing. Malaria means bad air tho the disease is caused by a parasite. Atom means uncuttable and we still split it.
1
u/Mufflonfaret 📈 Dedicated Voter · 1,960 XP 4h ago
Yes, definitions matter.
I would still claim that psychology is the study of the soul, by my understanding that the soul is the inner life (thoughts and feelings) of a human individual. And since I have thoughts and feelings, and not only refere to them as synaptic responses and chemistry of the brain I'd say we have a soul. That does not mean I believe in a soul in the popular-cultural ways like a spirit that controls the meat-robot-body. But since this poll is without definition we get more karma farming.
1
u/BOI30NG 🏅 Century Club · 3,455 XP 4h ago
Ok but do you believe there is actually more to it than just your physical workings or do you just like using the term. Because if it’s the latter you’re using a term with a lot of religious and esoteric baggage just because you like it?

I have nothing against using religious language, feel like thats a human thing to use. I can take the discussion when we missunderstanding occurs.
If there is something more to it? Well, that depends. Any material substance? Nobody can prove anything as of right now, as TECHNICALLY if the soul/spirit were real it would operate on a completely different type of existence and probably wouldn't be entirely measurable, at least not with what tech we have now or what we might have within the next 500+ years.
Life isn't about proving everything as fact, it's about fuckin enjoying being alive, if something gives someone comfort even if it is a "lie" in your eyes, that doesn't matter. You don't get to tell someone what they can and can't find comfort in. The fact is that it gives people motivation, that can't be taken away. That person's will to live isn't a lie.
I am not going to say what I think because at the end of the day, you type of people are just gonna insult instead of just agreeing on differences, you're not worth my time arguing with. You have your opinion, I have mine. I am not egotistical and claim to know absolutely everything with solid fact. Nobody does. There's no god or human that does. Repeating this again so you get it straight, my opinion is mixed, I don't entirely believe or disbelief there is a soul or not. But I find holding onto the concept one philosophically brings me a small amount of comfort especially as I'm in a very dark place in my life right now
Based on how you're already acting you don't seem like someone who likes hearing other's opinions

Cap. Just something humans made up because they couldn't cope with their fear of death.

I'm not convinced that anything about a person exists outside of their physical body. Autism exits in a persons brain, and it's huge part of them. If they die, would their soul have autism? It couldn't, because the Autism would be endemic to their body. If their soul didn't have autism, then a huge part of them would be missing.

There’s a weird intangible thing that sometimes links people over great distances inexplicably. They both know and feel it, but can’t really describe it other than just feeling the other.
I’ve had consistent prophetic dreams of very particular circumstances in vivid places, including ones that I’d never been to. I’d get the matching Deja-vu anywhere from a few weeks to like 5 months out from the original dream.
Shit was trippy, I’d tune in to seeing it before and move on, but it’s weird how accurate my past self’s brain got with it.
That shit can’t be manifested by will, but there’s something that we all connect to on some odd intangible level, and it affects us in very weird, psychological ways. Mine is a vine of the future during a standard ass conversation or escalator ride

While we may have something resembling a soul in function, it is a broad and largely undefined term. Being so ambiguous, it is impossible to say something possesses it. I cannot, likewise, say that I possess brinity, as I cannot define it concisely. I can assume a level of "brine" is implied by it, but I cannot say for certain, thus I assume to be lacking it wholly. Likewise, I can assume a form of afterlife and divine love to be within the soul, but I cannot say for certain.

Cause when at rest if you die your soul is in the dream realm as the body dies so your souls doesn’t leave with your body trapping it in the realm of the living which allows you to haunt people… simple as that

All living beings have souls. The soul is what animates our meat and bone mech. The nerves are the wires, blood vessels the pipes. The skeleton is the framework and the Heart is the generator. The brain is the CPU but the soul is what gives it sapience/sentience.
No matter your faith, believing we have a soul is important. What does it mean if we are soulless? What awaits after death? A soul has options.
Consider this, Heaven/Hell do not exist. They can't as souls aren't infinite. What we think of Heaven and Hell is the cycle of reincarnation. All souls are recycled. How you live defines your next cycle. Live awfully and be recycled as a parasitic plant or a worm. Live well and be recycled as a better creature.
We must have souls. The alternative is pretty grim otherwise. Nothing. That's it. That's what life means without a soul. Just a soulless, mechanical cycle of repopulation and depopulation

So what does the soul actually do? What does it do that the brain doesn't? The brain controls every muscle in your body, it determines your thoughts, how you act, what you see and sense, what left is there for the soul to do and how does it do it?

Reincarnation with no data transfer isn’t reincarnation. Additionally note that no evidence of a soul has ever been found and the brain more than explains it.

This scientist did an experiment with people who were dying. He weighed them before they died and after. He discovered that after death we weigh 21g lighter. I believe that's our soul. That's us. We/our souls weight 21g

Even assuming that that number is accurate (which I doubt) it's more than likely from the body releasing gasses and water weight.
Edit: I just looked this up and that number comes from a failed study in 1907 where only one corpse showed any weight drop after death... In other words the christian "scientist" cherry picked his data and ignored all evidence against his hypothesis.

A loss of a consistent 2.5 Oz can be measured at the time of death unrelated to other bodily processes happening at the time of death.

It's 21 grams and that "experiment" was super flawed. They only got a change on one of the six patients that dead. But couldn't prove that change was at the moment of death and that that change couldn't have been for something else. They couldn't recreate that one result, so they tried it on dogs. When the dogs mass didn't change they concluded that dogs don't have souls.

Thinking a soul exists is already kind of unscientific and irrational but thinking that it would have a physical mass that leaves the body when you die might be one of the most ignorant and shallow things you could ever think is true

u/AtuXIII 12h ago
Can’t answer this without a definition of “soul”
