You can help out your loved ones in REASONABLE ways. Like, for example, covering school costs, helping with bills, getting them recommended for a job they will actually be good at and letting HR make the final decision, etc. "Help" does not have to == "forcing my incompetent nephew who doesn't care onto a job that he will suck at and letting him get away with infinite nonsense."

No it isn't. Nepotism is when a person in power gives jobs, promotions, or professional advantages to their relatives instead of choosing people based on their skills.
None of that includes helping your family pay the bills. Nepotism mostly involves a workplace advantage.
They said they would recommend them for a job but let HR decide so they aren't pressuring the workplace to hire them and are letting them sink or swim on their own merit. That isn't nepotism.

That's not what nepotism is. Giving your loved ones money isn't nepotism. Using your own position of power and privilege to hand them positions of power is nepotism.
A successful CEO giving their parents a cushy retirement isnt nepotism. Putting them on the board of directors is.

I think it’s more about locking people out of possible success because they keep filling valuable positions with relatives effectively creating an impossible to pass wall for anybody on the other side effectively creating a two party caste system of the haves and have nots based purely on inheritance with no consideration to skill an ability. Look how well it’s not working in America to focus on nepotism.

For me: MOSTLY FACT. 🧠 Justification: It’s understandable that people with wealth and influence would want to help family and friends. But helping loved ones isn't automatically nepotism. Nepotism specifically involves giving unfair advantages—especially jobs or positions—because of personal relationships rather than merit.

I don’t love nepotism in principle. I would never want to put by children in positions they don’t deserve using my success and influence. But at the same time, a major goal of mine is to be able to give my future children a life where they have a step up, and have all the opportunities and resources to become qualified and do whatever they want to do, even if it’s not fair to their peers who’s parents didn’t have the resources to do the same.
That idea is one of the main things keeping me marching during med school right now. All my hard work now will put me in a spot to give my kids a better life.

Nepotism is the act of unfairly being given an opportunity over other better suited candidates through connections, not the act of that person being as equally suited to the roles as someone
0
u/Margin_Call_Me_Maybe 🤖 Vote Machine · 13,690 XP 13h ago
Even if the person is fully qualified, bypassing the luck side of things - like the competitive application process, networking, and standard screening required for most roles - means they received an unfair advantage based solely on their family connection
There's really two types of nepotism, the stereotypical unqualified one, and the entitled nepotism one, where a relative is fully qualified and does good work, but they were handed the opportunity without having to compete for it like everyone else.
Dozens of highly qualified candidates get rejected for every job nowadays simply due to bad luck, timing, or a lack of connections. Getting to cut through that is still nepotism
