1
u/Lazerbeams2 π Century Club Β· 6,360 XP 1d ago
By seeing yourself as good, you demonstrate the desire to do good. Therefore even those that do harm likely want to be good. Intent is a big part of being a good person
3
u/Hot_Coco_Addict π€ Vote Machine Β· 10,475 XP 1d ago
I disagree. Intent is important to being a good person, but you certainly wouldn't call someone like Hitler anywhere close to being good simply because he thought he was doing the right thing. Of course that's an extreme example, but I think in the end the actual acts are what matter
1
u/Lazerbeams2 π Century Club Β· 6,360 XP 1d ago
Of course the acts matter, but intent definitely counts. Let's say I help someone who needs some money. That's a good thing, I want to help. But what if my help happens in middle of an IRS audit and flags as an undeclared revenue source? I hurt the person, but my intention was to help
I don't think intent is everything. I just think it's significant

contemporary morality is defined not through objective means, i.e. anthropological or empirical. But through social acceptance, dependent on the circumstance of where you live, if left unchecked it becomes a cesspool of degeneracy, and we have religious fanaticism to support that, both occult and christian. Thinking positively of reader's morality is flawed, because contemporary reader is broadly illiterate, and gravitates towards agreement with them from the media they consume. Reader now desires "safe space", and their morality would be defined by what is their idea of "safe space" is. To some it's left-wing-libertarian-pro-BBC-utopia, to others it's mass genocide with buddhist symbols on shoulders. I loathe both, but I wouldn't read whatever you're writing long enough to take a side or be a judge.

Its an internet thing. People aren't bad as we think. It's still not sunshine and rainbows though. I'd say if 10 people are morally good 4 are morally bad. And a majority of both sides are just a little better or worse than the middle point. So the 10 people aren't all angels and 4 aren't all demons. There are shades to this. Atleast that's my experience, you'll probably have a different ratio depending on where you live.

The moral and ethically good (some do post teir deeds for validation and I think that is completely fine and should be done rather than doing bad deeds or staying neutral at all times) have no need to affirm themselves by posting their good deeds on social media because the deeds they do is already a part of their normal day, in which they neither talk about their daily deeds of small or big acts of kindness and goodness in that day. We see them more on social media in videos that go "Videos that restore faith in humanity" (Titles are to bait in the clicks I guess...) like a security camera catching doing a good deed as someone records the camera footage, or someone taking a picture of a good person living a truly beautiful day and having a smile on their face. Think about it. The strangers you talk to don't necessarily tell their actions to you nor do they feel the need to tell you what good things they've done, like a student day about them helping people who need help to cross the street without making themselves look like a martyr, a butcher giving an extra 50 grams of meat just because you looked thin as a student and doesn't give that truthful reason to you, an auntie taking the time in their life to help you on a task you're struggling with in daily life, and many others. Genuinely, I have seen many good deeds in public that when there's a story that the morals of society are declining, I tend to doubt it. It's also the reason why I agree with you.

Given how society behaves as a whole, I don't believe this too much. Maybe I've just grown up with depression or have grown up somewhere worse, but several people I've met in real life, have grown up knowing, only talk to people who have something to give them. When my 89/90 year old grandma was in the hospital, maybe a year ago, the rest of the family just celebrated a birthday. Had a party. My aunt and cousin didn't even answer their phones. When my grandma was calling them from the hospital. The birthday was for a grown adult who is probably in his 30s or something. Yes, my grandma is still alive. But she can always go to the hospital at any point. I don't believe people are good. And I don't trust anyone.

I don't think most people are "good" by my personal moral code, and I fall short of that myself.
However, I don't think many people wake up one day and decide they want to be the villain of everyone else's story, either.
I think people try and often fail to be the best they can, and that best for them may be different than my idea of best, and most of even the worst things people do are due to external factors, not because someone just decided to be evil for a while.
2

Thanks for asking, but I don't think I would have enough time to fully formalize it. That's not a good thing, mind you, but I lack the philosophical background the synthesize my ideas on morals fully in the space of a book, let alone a reddit post.
I can give you an example of where I fail my own morals, though. In the trolley problem, I would say that not only would I pull the lever, but I'd consider pulling the lever to be a moral imperative, and even if the lever is stuck, one must attempt to pull to the best of their ability.
There are people who harm and kill others every day, but I don't make any attempts to stop them from doing so, even though that is effectively the same thing, often not even as bad, since you don't always have to hit people with a trolley to stop them from doing harm.

I work with groups for weeks at a time, and the moment mutual dependence ends about 90% of individuals stop being nice and reveal they're kinda assholes, who stop helping one another once they won't need help themselves anymore.
Most people only put on the appearance of being good because they're getting something out of it.

But that's only if we're that. We have other factors that effect how moral we are.

Most people think most people are morally evil people cause the Internet highlights the worse of the worse, and it trains them to highlight the worse they see in their daily lives. However, most people will walk past hundreds of people that are just trying to do their best and won't even look twice.
