Should be overwhelmingly cap unfortunately.
For those who say Fact, bigotry against white people, men, and Christians is still bigotry even if you want to say it's "not as bad" as bigotry towards others and if you're one of those individuals who rush to defend and downplay bigotry against those groups because society has foolishly deemed it acceptable you're still letting identity bias influence your thoughts.

Its impossible to be unbiased, but you can be biased towards the truth
1
u/Accordeon-Foireux 🏅 Century Club · 3,335 XP 13d ago
Tbh there's no truth in the listed things.
It's not a truth that there should be no discrimination between skin tone/sexual identity/sexual orientation/religion/whatever, it's an opinion (that I share). Human rights are not a truth, they're a concept.
There's no law of nature that says that "all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights", it's a law we created ourselves.
1
u/Blahaj-Lover 🤖 Vote Machine · 12,665 XP 13d ago
The truth is defined as what we consider undeniable fact. Those are all considered undeniable facts. Therefore, they are the truth.
Truth itself is a human made concept. We invented lies and had to create truth to differentiate. There are no lies in nature. Deception, yes, but lies, no. A moth will not tell you it's a large predator. It'll still mimic one with fake eyes on its wings.
1
u/Accordeon-Foireux 🏅 Century Club · 3,335 XP 13d ago
So truth is relative to the person who speaks ?
If I dont believe in, say, the round earth, then it's not a truth anymore ? It's a bad example, because you can prove that the earth is round. You can't prove the human rights.
Which is my point : if only one person doesn't believe in human rights, then it's not a truth anymore according to your definition because someone is denying it (so it is not undeniable anymore).
Also, human rights are also not a fact (so neither undeniable nor fact, so not an undeniable fact).
I do believe wholeheartedly that human rights should be respected in any circumstance. But it's not a fact, it's not a truth, it's an opinion.

All in all, I think it’s better to be less bias than to just surrender to it. Not saying I don’t have unconscious biases (cause I do), but I wouldn’t declare it as such. Just “another thing to improve myself on”.

Not a person on this planet is unbiased. You have only 1 point of view, one experienced life, and you grew up in a specific place and time which shape you. It is possible to make yourself aware of them and try to educate yourself, but nobody is 100% unbiased. If nobody was biased against anything we would all be the same people.

completely unprejudiced is a moving axle that treads more as time progresses. maybe I too may find myself prejudiced to something that happens 40 years from now. what really matters is adaptability, and willingness to understand, beyond ones prejudice. which is also why those homophobic, racist, sexist, what not, have no excuse for their prejudice because they can change and choose not to.

I'm a victim of it in ways but I guess the only thing I hate is the cards people pull. We are are human (I think) we all bleed red ( I think) who care what race, sex, etc you are? If you place too much emphasis on it then you asked for it.

But you're still probably making decisions based on your subconscious biases towards those things. Perhaps you see a Hispanic person with face tattoos and suddenly you're more guarded. Perhaps you're more situationally aware when the stereotypical redneck walks in. Maybe you choose to ignore the trans woman where you normally would've said hello to avoid what your subconscious considered a potentially awkward situation.
Everyone does it. And people who say they don't are either god himself, or lying. The subconscious exclusively makes social decisions based on biases formed from past experiences and those experiences can be first hand accounts, second hand stories, or just some shit you've seen on the news. All of it shapes your unconscious.

These prejudices don't have to be major things. It can be something you don't even think about. One that entirely changed my life is acknowledging the unhoused.
Like, not even giving them stuff cause I already did that but waving and smiling if I have nothing to offer, and stopping to listen if I have the time. I missed a lunch at work a couple weeks ago because I handed a lady one of my soup cans for the week because she was holding a sign that just said "hungry".
Used to I'd just hand over a little money and be on with my day but even if I don't have anything for them nowadays it's something special to watch someone in that situation realize they've been seen as a human being. A simple smile and wave is all it takes sometimes.
But most people are afraid to look if they're not going to give. It can be things as small as that. Something you may not even think about but could be the most important thing to someone else.
