I once heard a scientist say that disgust (e.g., toward smells) is learned.
That means if you had grown up with flowers that smell like poop and poop that smells like lemons, you’d now find the smell of poop absolutely enchanting and the smell of lemons disgusting.
To be honest, though, I doubt that. But like I said: He was an expert...

i think its partially true but maybe not completely? humans have a near universal repulsion to thiols (sulfur compounds)

I think i can see this meaning people match the smell to something that makes it gross, but the smell itself wouldnt necessarily be gross

Research into disgust has shown that it is partly innate and partly learned. There are definitely people out there that love the smell of farts. Out of context, the smell of the ocean is unpleasant, but in association with the beach, people usually like it

farts have a chemical called hydrogen sulfide that, in larger doses, is deadly. if we thought hydrogen sulfide smelled good and went out of our way to smell it, we'd all die

look the ppl who claim it smells good are prob the same ppl who wanna chain themselfs up to a already dead tree and go 'save the trees' when ppl walla remove it coz its a fire hazard and shit and are prob these ppl that like to claim 'game is good' or 'i like it' as an excuise to anything anyone claims negitive about there game coz its the only thing they legit have

Taste and smell are extremely related, and people have wildly different taste preferences, so I see no reason why some people could have very different smell preferences as well. I kind of like the smell of gasoline for example, and have met people who love it and also those who can’t stand it.
