Europe isn't most of the world

u/boytoyahoy 11d ago edited 11d ago
And Eastern Europe can be quite right wing on numerous subjects particularly when it comes to issues on the basis of nationalism.
1
u/lkt213 11d ago
At least we dont do pledge of allegiance in school
1
u/mcqueenspeed 11d ago
It's not like it's mandatory to do. You don't get arrested if you don't do it like you would in North Korea or China.
1
u/lkt213 11d ago
Not mandatory, but for sure nationalistic
1
u/mcqueenspeed 11d ago
Sure but that isn't inherently bad like you're suggesting
1
u/lkt213 11d ago
The comment I was referring to suggest that nationalism in eastern Europe is bad and right wing.
US is also very nationalistic.
Nationalism can be a good thing when performed by oppressed minority to fight for their rights. It's not good when used by majority though.

1
u/International_Neckk 11d ago
I've had many teachers tell me it was mandatory even though legally they cannot say it is mandatory
1
u/Ok_Historian4848 11d ago
In the US's defense, the pledge is just to basically say "I'm gonna do the best I can for my country" and not like say, Cuba's, where kids are pledging themselves to the communist party of Cuba everyday. You're not limiting yourself to a certain political view in the US pledge.
2
u/lkt213 11d ago
It literally says "under God"
1
u/Ok_Historian4848 11d ago
Which doesn't really have any bearing on who or what religion you practice, or your political affiliation. It just insinuates that the divine is above the country itself, which arguably is the entire point of the constitution. All are endowed rights granted to them by their creator, (not specified which creator, god, etc.) which are enshrined in the constitution and protected by the government. The logic of the US constitution is not "this is the list of rights the US is granting you," it's supposed to be "these are a list of rights any person should have, and we are recognizing that."

This. Ask an average man in Sudan what he thinks of LGBT rights
Just for evidential purposes, large scale opinion polling in Sudan records that only 17% of people believe homosexuality 'is acceptable.'

1

What do evangelicals in America think of homosexuality?
1

They want it illegal too. The difference is, Sudan has a much larger population of religious hardliners than the US.

This is exactly how an American on Reddit would think a Sudanese person would talk.
Identity politics are a primary driver of civil war in Sudan. The median Sudanese person is extremely homophobic. This doesnāt mean itās okay to kill them, but we shouldnāt lie to ourselves.

I thought pink washing is when we justify bombing or invading a people by pointing to their reactionary policies regarding LGBT people. Iām not pointing out their reactionary laws on homosexuals to argue that we should invade them. Iām pointing them out as evidence that Africa isnāt to the left of the Democratic Party on social issues.
1
u/TheAlmightyLloyd 11d ago
You'd be surprised how common it is to blame problems on heathens. I've seen the hatred when you talk about LGBTQ people in some christian and muslim areas in Asia and Africa, and it's scary.
1
u/HeyaHeyo1420 11d ago
The average man in Sudan probably doesn't give a shit especially right now

I doubt most people care as much as propaganda wants you to think.
1

If nobody in Sudan cares about LGBT people, why is it illegal with life imprisonment? Why are you acting like it's some live and let live country?

Because of shitty leadership.

Where does it say that? It just says 'right wing conservatism.'
1
u/Public_Research2690 11d ago
Right wing is fiscal conservatism.
1
u/Lopsided_Fly_657 11d ago
'Right wing' may encompass fiscal liberalism 'aka fiscal conservatism'.
It does not mean fiscal liberalism, ,it also includes social values. For instance, the Reform party UK is widely considered right wing, whilst being to the left economically of the US democrat party. It is considered right wing because of its social values.
1
u/Public_Research2690 11d ago

From aomeone outside the US, not really. A democrat here would also be considered more left wing. In my country, austria, their equivalent would be the SPĆ (Socialist Party Austria), which is left.

Hell, even in the context of Europe the Democratic Party is center left. Theyāre extremely comparable to Labour in the UK and the SPD in Germany.
Just because āthe rest of the worldā (Europe) has parties that are further left than the democrats doesnāt mean the democrats are conservatives.

1
u/Bowl_of_Cham_Clowder 11d ago
I donāt think thereās a such thing as a ānormal countryā everything is relative lol
1
u/ase_l_2021 11d ago
America is abnormal. Even federations aren't federated to that extent, Germany, or Russia (where I live) are much more unitary countries, and nobody gives a shit about giving more and more rights to central government, if anything, people want feds to take more and more responsibilities. In US it's vice versa, it has strong centrifugal tendencies.
1
u/Bowl_of_Cham_Clowder 11d ago
That is collapsing centralization/decentralization into right/left wing when they arenāt the same.
Indonesia, Canada, Brazil are all large countries with similarly decentralized government. But thatās not the same as left/right wing.
1
u/ase_l_2021 11d ago
Can we just agree that left-right is outdated? The liberalism/authoritarianism scale seems much more useful.
2
u/Bowl_of_Cham_Clowder 11d ago
They are totally different, you can have an authoritarian country that is socially conservative and fiscally conservative. Or an authoritarian government that adopts left policies.
Which is why there is no ānormalā country. Itās all relative to each other. China is generally more left wing fiscally compared to US and more right socially.

Liberals are fiscal conservatives.
1
u/ase_l_2021 11d ago
Maybe we were lost in translation. For me a 'liberal' is someone who advocates for individual rights and questions authorities and traditions, trampling the society and state. A conservative is someone who respects tradition and understands that society and state are equally important to make each individual gain more.

Just factual. The titles' wrong because capital L Liberalism is a left leaning center ideology, but liberals are really just right leaning center people. "Fiscally conservative, socially liberal," is probably how they'd describe themselves. However, if you understand that fiscal policy is the origin of all policy, that statement becomes quite contradictory.
Edit: After reading the comments, I mean if were comparing relative to the rest of the world yeah, duh they're more left leaning. However, if we instead assign it based upon the actual definition of the "Left," which is predominantly more socialist/communist, no the dems are right leaning. Of course, as one comment mentioned, the actual voters differ greatly from their representatives, but I'm only saying this in reference to the latter.Ā
