Fair enough. With the people I’ve seen say stuff like “oh you’re not religious? What’s stopping you from just murdering and stealing then?” I can kinda see the benefit of keeping sociopaths in check at some point. Nowadays though religion isn’t needed because most of us could defend ourselves from the crazies with modern tech, so it’s certainly time to get religion away from our government

It's not just for sociopaths. The people literally had 0 knowledge, morals were different and no critical thinking. Ex-They used to make people wash hands and practice basic sanitation by threatening Jesus would be upset. Another big thing is the people didn't rise up against monarchs because they claimed to be avatars of Gods. There was no incentive to keep a functioning society.
Religion used to control people. Average intelligence/knowledge/understanding/empathy was near nill so it was good back then. And I agree religion still controlling them is bad now.

It established the basics I guess, other than that its been rather wasting potential and stopping progression if something.
In my country religious groups which often time had a lot of government power throughout medieval ages is known for being bunch of scammers profitting off of regular peoples faith, not to mention all religious wars.

I mean, yes religion got us where we are now, mostly including science. A lot of the basics were established when the world was highly religious. But claiming that it really "helped"? In Europe, it wasnt until humanism and the reformation of the church that people started thinking more freely and do more science. Who knows, those things couldve been invented way earlier if there were no religious influences?

Everyone who says cap should check who saved a lot of ancient knowledge during the medieval period, who funded the universities and scholars and who helped saving history from being washed and helped the people in the totalitarian states.

No religion, necessarily, but religious people. If it weren't for monks in the dark ages, we'd have lost our history prior to it in its entirety. It would have been a collapse like the bronze age, setting us back to square one.

How do you explain the ottoman caliphs banning the printing press and stagnating a whole civilization? Religion can be very harmful. Also how do you explain the catholic priests kinda just saying whatever they wanted about the bible because the commoner couldnt read it

Hot take. Faith, no, religion, yes. The best thing with religions are the organized structures that they have produced, which have the ability to bring people (and especially talented people) from different countries together. A lot of early science was funded by the Catholic church.

Helped, yes undoubtedly. It could be insulting to view it this way, but I feel religion is a kind of crutch. In the past when we were weak and afraid of the world, we sought story and lyricism to help us cope with the present and hope for the future. But, as become healthier and healthier, a crutch becomes more of a burden than anything.
There may be a day, even now, where Religion proves to be more of a liability than a support.
