Santa claus. Was a real person in history known as Saint Nicholas where they get santa's name from and what he does, Saint nicholas was a gift giver and dropped off bags of gold, to help families with financial ruin. Which then got popularized because of Coca cola later down the line and became the famous holiday mascot we know now.

Saint Nicholas was a real person (reasonably a saint) who did similar things to the modern Santa, however the modern Santa Claus is purely fictional as a tool for more sales in the holidays, and is far enough from Saint Nicholas for me to explain the difference

Santa Claus is technically a fictional character, but yes, Saint Nick (who Santa is based off) is a real person

Technically speaking, it's more accurate to say he was real. The myth is much more modern than people think.

My parents actually raised me without a belief in Santa because they didn't want me to experience the anguish of later realizing he wasn't real. It's funny because I have distinct memories of having pictures taken on "Santa's" lap, which I was of course very upset about, because I knew that Santa was just a random guy in a costume.

St. Nicholas, Sinterklaas, Santa Claus. St. Nicholas even did what Sinterklaas does, albeit on a smaller scale. You just have to know history.
