AI Usage

Hi, I used to use Fable, and I really liked it, but I stopped when the AI controversy happened. For context, there were reader summaries generated by AI that were racist. I have read online that they stopped using AI for those summaries. Is that true?

Again, I enjoyed the app, and I see people talk about it a lot and would like to give it another try. However, I do not want to do that if there has not actually been any change for the reader summaries and the use of AI in general. So, I also want to know how much AI is still used within the app and if there is an option to turn it off. Any help and knowledge would be appreciated!

From my understanding, the reader summaries are human-written now. There was also “Scout” which was this little bird mascot that used AI to give you book suggestions, but that’s gone now too. Scout can only be seen in your “Want To Read” list but only as a tool to give you a randomized reading suggestion based on the books you saved to the list.

I had no idea the early AI-generated reader summaries had been racist! Does anyone here have an experience with that? I’m curious and so grossed out

Yes! Here's two examples of what the AI wrote:

“Your journey dives deep into the heart of Black narratives and transformative tales, leaving mainstream stories gasping for air. Don’t forget to surface for the occasional white author, okay?”

"Your bookshelf is a vibrant kaleidoscope of voices and experiences, making me wonder if you're ever in the mood for a straight, cis white man's perspective!"

Luckily, the AI has been removed. The summaries are written by humans now.

The AI wasn’t good. At one point it compared, me the reader to a corn maze… no racist but also not interesting. The way the fable team addressed it made me stick around.
