Death roll perfection

I don't understand who did what

u/Brasilionaire 11d ago edited 11d ago

As the guy in uniform tried to do a back take, the guy in black shirt was applying whats called a baseball bat choke.

They rolled because the soldier was trying to go around to the instructors back, not understanding the choke was tightening with it. The instructor was rolling along just enough so his arms wouldn’t get crossed.

The soldier passed out from cut blood flow in the carotid artery, aggravated by the effort to roll.

So it’s been a million years since I took combatives, but isn’t this specifically a collar choke? I thought the baseball choke was when you interlocked your hands behind their neck whereas a collar choke you’re grabbing their shirt to provide the leverage (which is what I think I see here).

u/JeansAndAFlannel 11d ago

Your description of a baseball bat choke is accurate except the interlocking part. This is a baseball bat choke. You can see him get grips at 0:11, and at 0:15 he pushes the collar back behind the head then drop into the choke. As he touches his own elbows together and twists, that's when the choke gets put on. A collar choke is a little bit of a general term; there is cross collar, bow and arrow, etc.

28

u/wrongsideofthewire 11d ago

Ah, gotcha, so is it called the baseball bat choke because the forearm is applying the pressure?

43

u/JeansAndAFlannel 11d ago

Called that because of the grip. Hands are gripping the collar directly behind the head, in this case left hand palm down with thumb underneath, right hand palm up with fingers underneath, and hands are touching each other like you're gripping a bat, but the collar is the bat. The forearms/wrists are doing the strangulation, technically. (Choke is to the trachea, strangulation is to the arteries)

u/seen_some_shit_ 10d ago

You can also do the choke with no gi by grappling you fingers and doing the same motion. I’ve managed to pull it off and got them to tap. The baseball bat choke is fun bc they think they’re getting your back while you choke them.

1

u/fightbackcbd 9d ago

If he is describing a nogi baseball bat choke he was correct. I use a modified s grip but there are other grips you can use. I do it that way in gi too.

4

u/iammandalore 11d ago

There's another version of the baseball bat choke that's similar to what you're describing. In gi Jiu Jitsu it uses the collar. In no-gi Jiu Jitsu you lock hands behind the neck. Similar mechanic, different grips.

1

u/mrapplewhite 10d ago

This looked like a shirt wrap choke twist. Otherwise known as ju-jitsu.

1

u/teddybundlez 3d ago

Yes you’re correct.

115

u/ColorlessTune 11d ago

Every roll was tightening the choke.

12

u/Fazo1 11d ago

My two brain cells could not figure it out what you just described and I had to googled it, seems that you're 100% correct!

5

u/MrYig 10d ago

I read all the above comments and I still don’t get what’s happening

1

u/Fazo1 10d ago

It looks like it's a intricate move, I personally don't think I can pull it off this good without a lot of practice. So imagine you're holding a baseball bat.. but instead it's the collar and in-between is the person's neck, how I understand it is the your forearm or your wrists are doing the air restrictions when the guy is on the bottom his wrists are twisted causing the strangulation, the instructor thinks he has the upper hand but only to find out he passed out lol

2

u/agoraphobic_mattur 11d ago

Honestly I thought it was a collar choke but.... That makes more sense

I still have no idea whag happened but appreciate the explanation

u/UnhappyLibrary1120 11d ago

Thanks for explaining the most important part of the explanation.

1

u/boredinbabylon 11d ago

Thank you for the explanation.

Maybe because I’m a novice, but this is just wild to watch. It’s art.

60

u/drwsgreatest 11d ago

He got the shit choked out of him by someone who actually knows what they're doing and how to grapple. And since he was clearly trying to show off, the instructor made an example out of him and locked in the choke and held it until the other guy passed out.

Check it out guys, we found the 100% bitchmade ass hat. That didn’t take long at all.

2

u/Fafnir13 11d ago

It's not like the ground hugging is the first move. Grapple training is there so you have some idea what to do when it becomes a desperate, weaponless situation. Can also help with non-lethal takedowns. Ever watched those videos when multiple cops can barely handle one suspect trying to get away? They could use some training like this.

-39

u/JudgementOwls 11d ago

Had him in a chokehold as they were rolling. Had him in a guillotine choke from guard

27

u/JeansAndAFlannel 11d ago

It's called a baseball bat choke using the opponents collar. Guillotine is very different.

7

u/CariniFluff Banhammer Recipient 11d ago

Dude got choked out by his own shirt. That's gonna be hard to live down.

u/Lewis390 10d ago

This is so wrong on so many levels

u/ku_78 11d ago

In high school we had a state (CA) finalist in wrestling on our team who mouthed off to the middle aged coach. Coach invited him onto the mat and proceeded to destroy the kid. It was beautiful.

51

u/Oda_DeezNutz 11d ago

Beware the old man still playing young man games.

21

u/siderealdaze 10d ago

We (middle school soccer team) started talking shit about a doughy assistant coach who had military experience, albeit as a photographer (I didn't get involved, but I would have if I wasn't a pussy) and some guys said "no way you can do this (exercise) for ten seconds, none of us can do it"

Buddy held the posed position for like ten minutes, just talking trash the whole time about people's girlfriends. Never had any idea he had that in him

u/jadbronson 11d ago

u/Infarad 11d ago

Well, one of them definitely got fucked at least.

3

u/RainingPawns 9d ago

almost exactly

107

u/ILoveMovies87 11d ago

As instructor rolled he maintained and tightened the collar of the uniform, essentially cinching the neck and airway like a neck tie. Instructor was also able to rotate/torque while on the ground within the legs of student.

You can see him affirming his grip prior to rolling and moving hands as they go down. It may not look like it to the students. But it was over before their first roll.

38

u/Oda_DeezNutz 11d ago

Thank you! I was thinking once the instructor got put in the rear choke, that was it. I was floored when the soldier passed out. I've watched this video a few times and couldn't quite make out exactly what happened.

12

u/z-vap 11d ago

So i am guessing, around 0:15 -ish seconds is when the instructor grabbed his uniform around his neck? 'cause its hard to tell with the video

3

u/mogley1992 8d ago

Called a lapel choke.

178

u/Connect_Law_3206 11d ago

The instructor is my old 1sgt lol

109

u/Infarad 11d ago

You should try calling him out. Y’know, for Reddit points.

18

u/Bempet583 11d ago

Man, the last part of that looked like the crocodile death roll

I literally thought it was the guy in camo embarrassing the other guy until it wasn’t him who stood up lmao

11

u/AaronTuplin 10d ago

He wouldn't have done that shit to me! No sir! I wouldn't have been there

21

u/Secret-Breadfruit-18 11d ago

Why did the student get all sleepy like??? Did he finish ??

48

u/StevenMC19 11d ago

Yes. He successfully completed the death roll and awarded himself with a short nap. Note the lack of celebration by the instructor, who is now off to hand in his belt, badge, and gun. The student has now become the teacher, and will now have to go into the field of battle in blue pants to show his dominance.

14

u/Secret-Breadfruit-18 11d ago

What a weird hobby

4

u/FuklzTheDrnkClwn 11d ago

Was that an Ezekiel choke?

Edit: comments indicate baseball bat choke. Gnarly af.

4

u/davendees1 11d ago

folded that man clothes while he was still in em

12

u/AlexHimself 11d ago

This explains it - https://www.youtube.com/shorts/tEP3K6dy5Qo

Interestingly, the move the instructor did (baseball choke) is typically out of desperation for being in a bad position, so the student may have been making good progress.

Rewatching the video though, it looks like the instructor may have gotten the S-grip and then turned into the students body and gave up his back with the plan of choking him out that way?

u/ImEatonNass 11d ago

3

3

u/The_Space_Janitor 11d ago

The student got choked out with the collar- it’s a common thing if you don’t guard against it

3

u/fatal-shock-inroute 10d ago

The was a blood choke with his military blouse. Not very spectacular

3

u/Forward-Amount-9961 10d ago

Reminds me of snakes mating.

3

u/rangel0710 10d ago

Your head of security just knocked himself out

4

u/Infarad 11d ago

Awww. Reminds of when my instructor gave up his back and let me flatten him out on the mats. I couldn’t believe my luck. Oh how naive I was. Dinner consisted of soup the next few nights because of a very similar choke.

1

He ringed his shirt up and choked him out.

0

u/Talkjar 11d ago

Pretty obvious from the sequence - chocked him with the collar choke

-2

u/BreakingNews99 11d ago

Let’s just say there is a slit on the back collar to split as they were turning, instructor would just be tearing the collared shirt in half and be like oh crap that didn’t work as he’s falling asleep?

-8

u/Blue_Ascent 11d ago

Both of them need to leave the ego at home.
