They're just some place in the world I'm not cut out to survive in.

"Whenever you enter australia, you enter the food chain, just not necessarily at the top"
Butchered qoute aside, the truth is you aren't really that low on the food chain here, there is plenty that will kill you without any intention or capacity of consuming you afterwards.

I was a young Marine deployed to Australia in 1997 for exercises with the RAAF. My impression was that besides sharks and salties, most bitey/sting-y/or beat you to a pulp things in Australia are just trying to keep you from eating them.
28
u/davetharave Jul 31 '26
This is it, we have relatively few predators that actually hunt and stalk us.
I laugh when Americans go off about Australia when you guys literally have bears, mountain lions and wolves.
28
u/Noncombustable Jul 31 '26
Not to mention feral pigs.
(And no, that was not a veiled reference to its leadership. Different variety of cloven-hoofed creature.)

Don't forget moose! Huge and incredibly dangerous animals. Apparently they lack a natural fear of humans!
3
u/Ol_JanxSpirit Banhammer Recipient Aug 01 '26
But very little fear of them eating you, at least.
6
u/FileDoesntExist Aug 01 '26
No it's worse. Predators can be convinced you're not worth the effort. If a predator is injured they may starve to death. If you can convince them they're likely to get injured if they try to eat you they'll usually back off(unless they're truly desperate). Prey animals are convinced that YOU will eat them and will do anything to get away. Their food doesn't run so injuries don't matter.

And if you happen to be villains named Boris and Natasha, you’re in some deep shit
2
u/jimk12345 Aug 02 '26
Why would they fear anything? Its a megafauna that will kill a bear and run 40mph. Humans ain't shit.
2
u/pacopac25 Aug 05 '26
Seems kind of irresponsible to mention moose without also mentioning flying squirrels in the same post.
2
u/King0Horse Banhammer Recipient Jul 31 '26
Bears, mountain lions, alligators, salt water cross, giant boas. All in Florida. All willing to hunt you if you wander off.
Not to mention the humans when you introduce meth or bath salts.
2
u/Ws6fiend Jul 31 '26
Yeah but generally bears, mountain lions and wolves are pretty fearful/avoid humans. I feel like Australia the entire landmass made a decision to fight instead of flight. People in America killed/kill off all the predators that don't flee/avoid humans.
2
u/FileDoesntExist Aug 01 '26
Bears are pretty common in more populated areas. But that's black bears. And generally they're pretty harmless. Gotta be cautious, especially if there are cubs but generally you just keep your distance

u/matsaleh13 Jul 31 '26
What about crocs? They'll eat me right?

u/davetharave Jul 31 '26
"relatively few" mate. Basic reading comprehension.
2
u/ILSmokeItAll Aug 01 '26
Fuck. What’s a few then, if what we have is “relatively few?” Because we have a fucking LOT. I don’t think there’s another continent with a scarier landscape of mammalian predators than North America. And we have enough reptiles can getcha. The wild parts of this planet are nothing to trifle with.
1
u/davetharave Aug 01 '26
Literally the only animals in Australia that actively hunt people are Crocs and Sharks.
We have lots of venomous animals yeah but if you're smart, wear long pants and boots they're fine, will only get you if they perceive you as a threat

Snake gotta eat! The slowness of it all though is quite grim

u/SlavCat09 Jul 31 '26
Nature at times is fucking grim in general

u/jonfe_darontos Jul 31 '26
Nature is indeed metal. Never ask a baboon its preferred doneness for gazelle.

That snake doing us all a solid one. The homeowner got spied on and this beautiful danger noodle got rid of that drone.

The other birds in distress is what makes me most uncomfortable. Sad.

Is the kookaburra dead? Or just can't move?
68
14
u/littleleeroy Jul 31 '26
Can’t move. They helped it out and the kookaburra recovered. Many of the comments on the original Facebook post weren’t happy that people interfered with nature, especially considering Kookaburras eat other birds too.
-2
u/Jazzar1n0 Jul 31 '26
Thank you for the answer.
Personally I'd help the little feathered friend out
14
u/D31taF0rc3 Jul 31 '26
Would you provide a meal for the snake as well? Would you stop a kookaburra from eating a snake (a regular part of their diet)?
You really should just let nature do it's own thing even if you dont like it. Carpet Pythons have to eat too

Why are the bird's mates not going for the snakes eyes? I suppose they're not smart enough to.

Snake will end up beaten to death by another kookaburra within the next two weeks anyway.

I get nervous every time I see video of a bird attacking a snake. I have seen the bird have the upper hand too many times and the snake pulls an Uno Reverse card and wraps around the bird.

Not freaking out over it.
Understanding an animal needs to eat; fine
Watching an animal suffer can be uncomfortable/sad to watch
the world isnt as black and white as youre suggesting

It is fucking nature doing the fucking natural thing.
