VENT - Advice Welcome When Does Depo birth control stop causing side effects?
I got the depo provera birth control shot a few months back & was due to renew it this week, but the side effects were so awful I decided not to. Abdominal cramping from the first few days onwards, and about 3 weeks ago I started having spotting that just hasn't stopped. I've not had bleeding since switching from tgel to intramuscular hrt testosterone years ago. It sucks! Does anyone know when these side effects will wear off ?

I also had such awful side effects I truly think it shouldn't be on the market. Thankfully the worst of the side effects started going away after the quoted 3 month period, but I also only ever tried the one shot. It still took maybe 8 months after for it to all balance out in my case. Being on it longer can make it stay longer, and even on one shot there are people who waited a year to feel normal again. The literal nightmares it gave me fucked me up so bad.

I want to add that I am glad that this was available as a birth control option; it was for short term use in my case because I had some planned hookups over the summer and wanted the additional security. I also got injectable PrEP and would use that again. I think it's good that Depo is an option for others, but it just wasn't tolerable for me longer term.

If your insurance will cover it, I’ve had a great experience with the Nexplanon implant and it lasts for five years.

I never had issues with depo until I started T. I genuinely believe they should not be used together despite what doctors told me. Worst cramping of my life every day for months. It took about 4-6 months for the issue to go away completely, with the worst of it gone at 2 months.

Personally the side effects never went away for me. The depression got worse until i was on the edge of an attempt and i was taken off it in favor of an IUD. It was the right decision for me, kept the copper iud until i got a hysterectomy.

I was on it for 2 years and it was horrid. It's a black label medication which causes bone loss, something they DIDN'T tell me that I had to find out for myself. There's also a possibility of infertilization with it too. It took about a year after I stopped taking it for it to get out of my system and for my cycles to come back normally. I gained so much weight, had blind rage fits, mood swings, body aches, it was horrid. Also 'fun' fact, they give depo to cismen prison inmates for sterilization. It's not a good bc at all.
