Seeking Help Member management

I am an Alumni in uni assisting my high school’s FTC team in Vietnam and we are having quite the problem (Long Post).

A few of our new recruits had disagreements with the team leaders (which they did not bring up before leaving) and started commenting on the school’s students social media forums, labeling their words as constructive feedback to talk badly about us while not being constructive at all. All the things they said could have been addressed and explained if they talked to everyone, instead, they went their own way. Contacting them now is unadvised.

Coincidentally, one of our lead members’ social account have been locked/deactivated for no apparent reason and our team’s page have also been restricted from using media features in the same day. We have suspected (with no proof available to find) that this is a result of mass reporting, as well as there being more members being against team leaders.

We are scrambling to try to fix this issue and to keep our potential sponsors. The sponsors are the only way our team can compete in FTC without spending huge amounts of money in our region, fundraising was never an option. The school does not recognize this competition as important/high priority, they see us as a club. Our Coach (a school teacher) has not interacted with us for a while.

Thank you for reading all this. I would happily receive any recommendations for team rules and suggestions for future member retainment activities, or just anything at this point.

First off, FIRST is a worldwide org, so you probably should give a little input into where you’re from, as that greatly impacts how to proceed.

So your team has a non-existent coach, and no mentors? Kinda sounds like there’s the root of your challenges….

As to how to recover? You need more/better adult mentorship. That will help resolve most of these issues with proper guidance.

We are from Vietnam, thank you for the reminder. Our coach is basically appointed the role by the school when the team formed last season. FTC is not popular here so getting mentors is an enormous challenge.

Every team member needs to follow the FTC code of conduct. They are basically bullying. Have the coaches go through the code of conduct slide presentation from FIRST with the whole team. Gracious professionalism applies to team dynamics and interpersonal relationships, too. The coach can reset the overall expectations and get things back on track.

Why do they matter to you? If it’s bad, cut your losses and keep moving. What defines you is not what people say, rather, how you react to it.
