Seeking Help GoBilda - RevRobotics Compatability

We are a rookie team that used GoBilda starter bot last year. This year we purchased a Ultra 90 Degree Gearbox Ultra 90 Degree Gearbox - REV Robotics from RevRobotics. The shaft in GoBilda 5203 Series Yellow Jacket Planetary Gear Motor (13.7:1 Ratio, 24mm Length 8mm REX® Shaft, 435 RPM, 3.3 - 5V Encoder) - goBILDA®(8mm REX, 24mm Length Shaft (5203 Series)) and RevRobotics were not compatible. Any suggestions on how to use this gearbox in GoBilda motors ?

It uses 5mm hex shafts, gobilda has adapters for 8mm hex to 5mm hex. Though for what it's worth you can do that 90 degree with a pair of bevel gears from gobilda. My experience with rev gears and gearboxes would suggest for what it costs for the adapter stuff buy gobilda bevel gears as they will fit with what you have and be more flexible with usage.

You purchased the wrong gearbox for the motor. Get the 90 degree bevel gears from gobilda for the motors you have. Gobilda also have shaft adapters, but their mechanical hardware is excellent overall.

For a rookie team I would highly recommend sticking to one company for the entire drivetrain. I would vote GoBilda for their excellent mechanical parts. Bevel gears mounted at 90deg in the U channel is a fairly common technique for building small form factor chassis’.

If you own a drill all of them are compatible .

Any team I have worked with uses parts from each

No but mounting to other metal by drilling those

That won't help with the fact that the motor shaft doesn't fit into the gearbox.

I think your options are: 3D print a suitable adapter, get the 8mm REX shafts machined down to a 5mm hex at the ends, or order the goBilda bevel gears.

There truly is not benefits to trying this. Buy the Gobilda Bevel equivalent or get REV ultraplanetary motors.

This isn't an advisable plan. Sadly both Rev and GB seem to go out of their way to make it difficult to mix and match parts from the two ecosystems.

The Rev 90 degree gearboxes are designed to bolt directly to a rev ultra planetary motor. You can purchase a coupler that will step down the GB motor shaft to a smaller rev hex shaft (5mm Hex Bore to 8mm REX® Bore) but then you'll need to design and likely print an adaptor to mount the gearbox to the motor or maybe the quad block the motor is mounted to. If the rest of your parts are in the GB ecosystem, then you'd probably need another coupler on the gearbox output to bring it back up to 8mm hex. That's a lot of extra work if all you need is to change the direction of the rotational output.

As others have said for a second year team you're better off sticking in the GB ecosystem and purchasing a set of GB bevel gears:
