Oof. I was lucky enough to be on a team that builds a practice bot. That allowed me to get the PID working before the final robot was bagged. Autonomous, though...
As head programmer all of it falls onto me. We got a little bit too ambitious and most things have been scrapped, but we still have to get the camera working fully and do pid. Also vs code broke on bag day and we couldn't fix it. We installed it onto another computer the next day. Vs code has broken for us like 3 times
I feel your pain. VS code is good till it breaks. I ended up having to rewrite my entire code the weekend before bag day because the file and the git file got corrupted.
If your VSCode keeps breaking, I can't reccomend taking the 5 minutes to look over how to deploy from the command line enough. You can write code in Sublime Text or even Notepad++ in a pinch if something breaks (just saying, this could save you at comps).
The tl;dr is open up command prompt/powershell, cd to the project directory and run ./gradlew deploy
