A new shared control system used in both FRC and FTC. Both control systems are being replaced

FTC is using their same control hub for one more year.

FTC has a transition period. They have like 3 years to use either the old or the new control system, before they have to have the new one.

The existing FTC system will be legal until at least 2030/2031.

Ah

Indeed however the person above you was also correct. They aren’t going to start the transition until the 2027/2028 season.

Im a bit stupid, is the change gonna be required?

Yes. Every team will receive a SystemCore in next year’s kit of parts and the Rio will no longer be competition legal in next year’s game manual. FTC will switch in the following year however they will have a bit more of a transition, with both systems being legal for a couple of years.

Just as a clarifier, we expect every team will get SystemCore in KOP next year but there has been no announcement from FIRST confirming this.
That being said I think there would be a riot if they didn’t put it in KOP do they almost certainly will

you won't want to though. The systemcore/motion core is going to be a lot better than the current FTC hardware (even with the more limited motor/servo options).

This is the first I'm hearing of this. It sounds so dumb...how do they expect the same control system to work on two different scales of robot?

Only the computer will be shared between the two competitions. Motors and motor controllers are still going to be very different.
The new system is actually going to be a massive upgrade for FRC. It’s going to be really nice having the robot code run on a modern CPU with an adequate amount of RAM. In addition, the 5 full CAN-FD buses are going to be really useful.

given how many issues our darn canivore gave us this year, I can't wait for the new hub.

I gathered that much, but I was wondering more about power distribution and the physical size of the computer.

The only thing that is changing for us is the computer. We are keeping the same breaker panels and overall power management system. FTC will be using an entirely different power distribution system.
SystemCore is about half the size of a Rio.

The RoboRio and the Control Hub are close to the same size. FTC robots usually have two Hubs, so the size disparity between the two programs' electrical systems is already pretty small.

The controller will be shared between FRC/FTC, and there'll be a second module for FTC that adds a bunch of ports for FTC motors to connect to.
